- BBC 70's TV drama set in Birmingham centred around the criminal underground where John Kline (Maurice Colbourne) a former SAS man who found himself trapped in between various warring factions of Birmingham's underworld.
There were 2 seasons with the first a series of 6 episodes aired in 1976 and the second in 1978.

I watched it when first broadcast about 40-50 years ago. Been searching for it but had given up about a year ago when all I found was one short clip.

I had forgotten how problematic the material could be, lol. Clearly someone has done some work _tidying-up_ so to speak, 😆.

Any programme featuring an Allegro gets my aporoval. The 1970's had a unique look & feel.
I tried to learn to drive in one. The Quartic sterring wheel was terrible.

@@dontwantyourpoison7753 It’s an mp4 format file and you’re welcome to it. It runs at about 350K but surprisingly it’s quite reasonable quality for all that. I pulled your copy of the series down in 1080 but sadly it’s got some smearing and an audio delay. What quality are your original files?

I found the entire two series on a DVD eventually which included the original Play For Today drama but frankly season two went rather absurd with rather surreal ventures into credulity. So if you’ve got season 1 and the original play I wouldn’t worry about not getting season 2!

I was in Brum in the mid 1980s, it had hardly changed at all from this series. Sadly much of what made it a great place to be a student has gone now. I later worked in Smallbrook Queensway, which can be seen from 9:25 on.
I totally agree, I don't feel any affinity with my city anymore. When you look at Selfridge's building resembling an alien base on the moon and a library looking like something built for somewhere else but we'll stick it there anyway it doesn't feel like progress.

Where on earth did you find this? I saw this when it screened originally. Totally unique, kung fu, violent, Tarantino like editing. Got anymore?
Trade secret that, yep, I also saw the original, and I think, never repeated. I'm hoping to upload both seasons barring any issues changing this so I will trickle out what I can. I'm hoping to put them out on Thursdays about 9pm, which I think were the original screening times. Watch this space.

Errrrr, That Cop Shop is still there, I know because I live across the road on the estate - still today in 2023, the Estate is nowhere near as grotty as it looked back then- Brokingham City Council started to demolish the Maisionettes and other Blocks in Ladywood in the mid to late 90's
I lived a little further up the road in the townhouses on St Marks Crecent.
If memory serves, this was on the BBC, and since they are true professionals, I know that Ennio Morricone had his royalties for this...

I managed to buy a DVD box set which has BOTH series AND the PfT on it. BUT... season 2 descends into what amounts to a puerile set of cliches and almost parodies the original. So if you've not seen (and presumably enjoyed) Season 2 then you're NOT missing anything much worth the effort of tracking it down.@@dontwantyourpoison7753

Possibly the only time an Allegro was used in stunt driving. Need to get Top Gear to use it in Star In A Reasonably ****** Car 😎

I think it was/is on DVD, but only the second season caused publish problems, hence 1st episode of 2nd season in reverse. Still require feedback on that from viewers to whether they managed to reverse it back and watch forward before uploading any further episodes.

I remember watching this when it first came out, it was compulsive viewing for me. Of course this gangster then went on to build boats. He had to change his name to Howard! 🙂

I was 12 when I watched this. Seems quite astonishing but, whilst we were quite religious, we lived in a big house and my parents didn’t watch TV (we had only just got one then). Given what was shown on TV in the 1970s (I, Claudius?) maybe what kids see on the internet isn’t really that extreme - more a normal (and less tw*ty) progression 🤷
I was at a similar age, and at that time, some of those scenes in the 1st episode was a 5 minute walk frome where I lived. Thanks for the sub.
This is just a poor rehash of the original. The writer of Gangsters (1975) for Play for Today wanted to compress as must multiculturalism as possible into 80 minutes - tedious to say the least. Lots of punch-ups, and a long unexciting car-chase, but because of the multicultural soup it isn't memorable. But it's still superior to this series. I suspect the only reason why it hasn't been posted is because TH-cam censors had a fit when they heard the very non-politically correct language... and the glimpse of bosom.
