I'm not a surfer, but it was pretty funny seeing you zoom past the people paddling out while you're riding in, only to see you double back and immediately catch another wave 😂 I have no clue why you'd surf after seeing one of these hydrofoils zoom in and zoom out before you've even paddled 5 meters. I’m definitely catching waves because I have to paddle into them to get on foil. And this is a prone setup, it doesn’t have a motor, battery or prop, so it can’t work on a lake, you need waves to ride them 🤙🏼

Hi mate! Thanks for the kind words. Yeh I’ve surfed for 25+ years. It was definitely a tough transition; it’s really hard being in such a familiar environment but everything is so foreign. But then one day it all just clicks and then you have a bunch of ‘aha’ moments and you end up progressing through the learning process quite fast. So you get better pretty quickly. Definitely work way harder than in surfing, purely because you get so much ride time and you aren’t just limited to 1 wave per ride, it can take you through 5-10 waves and 3-5 mins at a time. I usually do between 500-1000 calories in a 1 hour session, depending on conditions. @misterbennetts it was. Back then Raes on Wategoes was actually the Argentine Ant . We would go grass sliding on cardboard in front of the light house down the slopes dodging wild goats.
@misterbennetts yes. Late 70s early 80s. If you are familiar with the Bay at that time you will remember the famous chocolate milk in the glass bottle, IL Duomo Italian restaurant and you would have eaten at Barry Crockers restaurant with the best calamari in town.
It seems that these would be fun surfing the wake of large ships. Especially ones traveling parallel to the coast. Tow out with a jet ski and have someone pick you up 10 miles down the coast.
Was lucky enough to score this place during my holiday from NZ 25-29 December, what a run of swell we had, the local foilers were super friendly and absolutely ripped, particularly your goofy foot mate in the red wetsuit top on this vid..witnessed some rides from the lighthouse past the pass all the way to town, foiling heaven..
That seems about as close to actual magic as you could have on the water. I wonder how do you get started again if you wipe out a long ways from shore? It seems like a slow and awkward thing to paddle a long distance.
First, top music choice 😎 Second, it's mighty similar to surf skating a bowl. Are the waves kinda like bowl transitions? Do you get pushed up by the wave or do you need to pump up and down like on a surf skate (which is what gives you speed of course)? I ask because the foil stays flat regardless of waves so i figure you must have to drive it up the face of the wave and down as well... But by doing that i can see where you'd get all that speed from pumping the transition, plus the wave travelling forwards. Like skating a moving dynamic bowl! Awesome!
Thanks! It’s actually nothing like surf skating. It’s more like snowboarding. But you use the wave energy for speed by staying high on the wave and then drop in to wipe speed off etc. the pumping is because you’re going against the swell and energy so you need to keep the foil moving at a certain speed or it will stall out. You paddle into waves like you would like a surfboard and just pop up 🤙🏼
Great video! I just ordered my first foil board and I’m super stoked!! Curious how these things get along in the lineup with other surfers? I’ll be using mine for wing foiling but surfing looks like a blast too. It doesn’t seem like it might bother other surfers bcuz it doesn’t make the wave break and your usually down the line already by the time it gets to a rideable wave for them? On the other hand, getting hit by a foil could easily be grounds for a fight to many surfers I believe. How’s your experience been?
Guy has skills but these things are scary as hell around other surfers. I had an experienced foil'r shoot his rig at me when me made a mistake. Also, my buddy here on Kauai cut his throat in the white water of a outer reef wave on his foil. Everything has danger of course, right place, right time.

@@misterbennetts that's inspiring to know. I have thought of trying out one of those electric assisted foil boards or possibly a wing foil set up or a padle board style. I think I'd need to cheat to begin with Some way of compensating for my physical limitations until I'm handy at it.
Yeh the Fliteboard’s are a great into to it. And then wing foiling is also a good way to get some time on foil. With a big enough board you can stand on the board with the sail and it pulls you onto foil. Give it a try!
80-85 depending on the brand is best for surfing. In my opinion, 75 is way too short. You’ll eventually end up on something around 85 if you do go 75 to start with 👍🏼
Yeh once again depends on the brand. I use a shim on the front bolts with the eagles on the F-one for more front foot pressure. Same with the lift foils. With something like Axis I’d use a shim in the back bolts to take out the front foot pressure cause they have way too much. It’s just a way of tuning the feel without moving the mast.

@@misterbennetts You still chose to weave in and out of people. Just stating the obvious. Cool sport, but if a foil chose to come zoom between me and my buddy I'd be annoyed to say the least.
Like I said, this wave is a foiling wave and anyone surfing out here is either learning and/or has no idea/not from here and shouldn’t be out here… besides a handful of local lords who we always show respect too and they do the same to us. 🤙🏼
I was amazed until they decided they had to go mess with the people. Why the hell would anyone be such a tool when you have the rest of the ocean? Damn that sucks
Who were they “messing with”? They were merely gliding through the area where the surfers were bobbing to catch a wave, I didn’t see a single time where they interfered with the surfers.
Like kite surfing these are easy to ride and master. Sure it will take some days/weeks to get the gist of it, but after that it's like snow skiing. The wave isn't dictating what you can do, you are. @@misterbennetts Thank you so much!
legs of steel i wldve thgt
So fun!
I dont know what will happen when they are all out there riding these horses
The good thing about foiling is you don’t need breaking waves so there’s plenty of room at breaks like this 🤙🏼
What board + Foil combo?
I’m riding an old JS board and an F-one 750 SK8 🤙🏼
@@misterbennetts is 750 the size? and how big are you? I'm new to foil gear.
Yep, 750 SK8 is the name of the foil. It’s 750cm2 in surface area. Most companies will call their models by the name and size.
Oooops, didn't read the comments before writing, I see myself out 😆
🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Він вибрався на берег?Чи його кинуло на скелі?
Made it to shore and no rocks were in sight!
Tomorrow's surfing, today !
✅✅✅
How many sea turtles do these long razor keeled craft smash into?
None, because you can always see them 😀
Ive surfed for 40 plus years if i was to start over id be foiling.
Im to old to start now.
You’re never too old. I foil with one of the lads in Ballina who’s 73. He’s out almost every day!
@@misterbennetts that's inspiring to know.
I have thought of trying out one of those electric assisted foil boards or possibly a wing foil set up or a padle board style.
I think I'd need to cheat to begin with
Some way of compensating for my physical limitations until I'm handy at it.
Yeh the Fliteboard’s are a great into to it. And then wing foiling is also a good way to get some time on foil. With a big enough board you can stand on the board with the sail and it pulls you onto foil. Give it a try!
Soul surfing
Yes sir!
Everyone looked really nervous . Those guys will chop someone up good if they hit someone. Really cool tho . I’m down if I had 3k
It’s not me you need to worried about, the learner to surfers will take you out! Haha
Too expensive! I’ll stick to normal surfing for now and until they lower the price on the foil
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
ripping! amped to try it, what mast length do you use?
Yeh it’s super fun. I’m on the 85 🤙🏼
80-85 depending on the brand is best for surfing. In my opinion, 75 is way too short. You’ll eventually end up on something around 85 if you do go 75 to start with 👍🏼
@@misterbennetts I read that you use -1 shim on the mast, just curious what that does and is that with the thick part at the back? Cheers
Foil board: Look at me boomers!
Lol
someone should check if this defies physics. Beautiful morning sport.or arvo for that matter.
It’s so much fun, you should give it a go one day!
The problem is if you come of 😅😅
😅😅😅
This needs to be legal in Canada? Why are Canadians always late on everything and restricting everything unnecessarily? 😡 I want this so bad but can’t even use it here 😥
Isn’t everything illegal in Canada? Proper communist vibes right? That sucks!
@@misterbennetts Everytning except dope (drugs ) and imagine recently they even wanted to make it legal to do drugs in public 🙄 as if these people need more dead brain cells 🙈 but yeah, everything else that actually matters is illegal.
@luxurytravel759 what a wild place to leave with no freedoms. That sucks! 😢
man, this makes surfing look primitive :P
I couldn’t agree more!
Surfing for old guys.
Surfing forever!
You just know OG surfers are annoyed af at these guys picking lines as they please, and weaving in and out of people on the fly. Hard to predict where or what these foils are going to do. Amazing craft/sport, but leave the people alone maybe? Not everyone's is jaw dropped and wants to watch you invade their space...
I am an OG surfer, been surfing for 25 years. I always show respect to surfers and give way when necessary. This wave is a foiling wave, not a surfing wave 🤙🏼
How do you water start
You just paddle in like a normal surfboard 🤙🏼
I was amazed until they decided they had to go mess with the people. Why the hell would anyone be such a tool when you have the rest of the ocean? Damn that sucks
This wave is a foiling wave 😅
How the fuck were they messing with people lmao. Get a life
✅✅✅
Who were they “messing with”? They were merely gliding through the area where the surfers were bobbing to catch a wave, I didn’t see a single time where they interfered with the surfers.
✅✅✅
Mushrooms
😅😅😅
Like kite surfing these are easy to ride and master. Sure it will take some days/weeks to get the gist of it, but after that it's like snow skiing. The wave isn't dictating what you can do, you are. That makes it boring after a short period. And you'll note that the guys doing it - like kite surfers - are wankers who weren't ever really good surfboard riders. Any idea why?
Lol 🤦🏽♂️
Cool toy ,but it ain’t surfing
It’s way funner than surfing 😁
Fake. You only can surf with the waves. Not sporty enough to go out again....
Haha you’re a funny man
😂
From this day forward all surfboards are redundant.
Haha they’ll still have their place, but I’m with you for sure! 🤙🏼
Too close to other peoples. Go out off the water and drive home.... You are a dangerous guy....
Lol
😂
@@vegan_freefoiler Nothing funny about this shit at 1:42 !!! Again: Go home and care of your family instead of beeing dangerous on the water...
Rich people doing boring, out of touch things
Haha love your ignorance!
