Bought a 173 three years ago, right before I left for the military. Since then, I’ve shot machine guns with it on my wrist, rolled around with it in the woods, wore it through sand, obstacle courses and salt water. Extremely robust. In all that time it’s only received one small scratch on the crystal from my metal accessory rail on my service carbine while I was wearing it on the bottom of my wrist during a training exercise. About a year and a half in, the dive strap broke, and I’ve replaced it with a couple of different nylon NATO straps. From the “Spectre” black and gray, to OD green, it looks great on all of them. Just recently, it’s started losing major time, like ten minutes a day. I’ve shot it off to Seiko, so we’ll see what the verdict is. Overall, I still highly recommend this watch.
I have a Seiko 7002-700A. Brought new around 1994, from memory. I am in New Zealand. It is extremely similar in appearance to the SKX173. A model I didn't even know existed until today. I wear it everyday for work on a Nato strap. June last year was the first "major" replacement item, ratchet wheel, apart from a yearly service and up to 90 seconds or so per week fast the closer to a service it gets. Ultimate tool watch. I stopped snorkeling/diving with it around 2010 when pitting around the case back and the crown became evident. Will be hunting this watch out on your website
I bought my SKX back in the mid 90’s and always thought it was the 007 but after watching this video it appears to be the 173 as it is identical to the one shown in the video. Great watch still wearing it daily. Thanks for the informative video!
I have a 20 year oldish skx-173; Singapore. The dial came free a few years ago and seiko said it would be cheaper to replace with another skx" than to repair. So now I am ordering watchmaking tools from amazon and I am going to repair (thru replacement of offending components) the watch. And upgrade to a sapphire crystal and maybe if I can find one that looks exactly the same....the bezel insert in ceramic. It's my COVID-19, isolation project. Thanks to youtube and "long island watch", and " just one more watch".... I am going to give it a try. Wish me luck. Be safe Stay healthy peace. clb
I have my seiko SKX173 at the seiko service center,I will be glad when it gets done and is returned to me. I am wearing the Hamilton Khaki king on a blue nato right now.
I just got my skx173 from you a couple of weeks ago. I love the watch. I think the dial and the second hands look so much better than the skx007. Now I am looking at the yellow dialed skxa35!
Looks like the 173 is a updated "day/date" 200m version of the 7002-700_ divers from the late 1980s-mid 90's. The indices, seconds hand, greenish lume, and strap are pretty much the same as were in the 7002s.
Great observation and the reason I bought a 173, although what I wanted was a 6309-729x. A bit older than the 7002 diver with day-date and same dial configuration.
I've got a bit of a fetish for that 7002 design, reminds me of the 80s. There are some nice mods out there, including a 7002 with beadblasted satin finish case.
Ya know what I would love to see....... is both of those watches with the strapcode bracelet on them side by side. Thanks again for your vids.....very imformative
The 173 looks for all intense and purposes like my all original Seiko 7002 only difference being the day and date complication vs the day only on the 7002. Certainly can see the appeal, something of a late 80's early to mid 90's vintage vibe.
007 is a bit played out, but I do like that the 173 has lume at 3 o'clock, and the dial is slightly more 3D. Of course, the 173 also has a "proper" seconds hand.
I love the sharper edges to the hour markers! I love my 009 and I can see this being a tough choice for newer people looking into entry level divers. Great comparison!
Nice review. I recently bought 007 from Japan on Amazon. 7 days delivered. I follow Urban Gentry Channel and he likes your shop. My next watch will be from you guys.
the skx 173n is the same look (only slightly larger) than my 6309-7290.... I own the Srp777 as well, I may add the skx007 as a EDC option for a 3 watch "set" of Seiko automatics, 41mm vintage, 42.5mm EDC (007), EDC, 44mm SRP turtle
The 173 is brighter use to own one sold it to a pawnshop for $50 it would never keep time picking up about 10 minutes a day and somehow I put a larger scratch in the Christel
Thanks for the detailed info! Do you guys sell metal bracelets for the 013 with end caps? I'm thinking about replacing my jubilee with something a bit more bulky.
Hi... I purchased the SKX007 from Long Island Watch about 3 months ago. Initially I was quite happy with it to the extent that I also purchased an upgraded bracelet for it. Lately I've noticed the only time it works continuously is when I leave it on a watch winder. I wear it at all times and after 2 days of wear, it stops working. Can you recommend some sort of solution to this problem? Great videos and I enjoy them all. Thanks.
Hi marc. Someone is sellling me a skx very similar to skx 173. The hands, dials same with that half triangle 12:00. But it says japan made at 7oclock and 7s26 700r r at 5lclock.im not an sure if its authentic 173 or is there really a japan version.. It also looks like 7002 but on the dials it says 7s26 and back case too. Its 7s26 0170.the back case has been replaced i think.
+Davis Trice In my opinion, the 4F24ZZ strap (the one on the 173) is more comfortable. www.longislandwatch.com/Seiko_4F24ZZ_Rubber_Dive_Strap_p/4f24zz.htm
I hate the strap on the skx007. Does some sell the skz007 with the strap the you show on the skx173 ? does the rubber strap on the skx173 fit on the skx07 ? Thanks for the good video :-)
Marc, you've had the 173 listed at $229, (the lowest I've seen). However, LIW has been out of stock on this item and the price is up to $270. Princeton Watch, a certified on-line Seiko dealer, has it at $249, (pretty much the median), with the 3 year Seiko warranty. Two questions: What will your price be once the 173 is back in stock? Should I hold off and wait for the new, hacking, hand-wound movement you mentioned, (this would be my dream Seiko diver). ie... Do you think Seiko might upgrade the movement in the 173 anytime soon?
+cjcar63 Seiko has told us more will not be available until July. I cannot comment on the price as I do not know what it will be. Not sure about upgrading either; sorry.
I had the 1 7 3 I got it as a Christmas present from my ex-wife back when we were still together I sold it at a pawn shop for 50 bucks for beer money but I worned everyday and it had signs of wear I had a different band the only complaint I had about that watch is if I wore it all the time it would start running about 5 minutes fast every day or so I would have to adjust the time which I shouldn't have to do on a watch that I paid that much for
I bought a Seiko SKX 173 a couple weeks ago. I dropped it on my linoleum floor and the second hand came off! Is this typical of this watch? I have returned it to Amazon and received a full refund I am trying my luck with the 007J. Any thoughts?
The only watches(mechanical) I have broke were all from drops to the floor. Most recent one was the Oris Williams f1 which fell from the table onto the wood floor. This knocked a piece inside the date wheel loose and now it is seized up.
Exactly why I’ve read multiple times, whether vintage or modern, handle your watch while off the wrist, over something, such as your bed or other “safety net.”
+Keith Stewart The reason is quite simple. I want you to focus on the watches, not on my hands that are dry, cracked, splitting and look like, well, as you so politely put, "shitters".
+Gary Cappelletti No. Being an official USA import, there are several CO requirements (country of origin) that must be inscribed on the piece. Requirements change, as do the locations where they churn these out.
The 1st 7S26A's were made in Japan, then the production moved to Singapore for the vast majority of the production life span of the 7S26 thus far, then production was moved to Malaysia in 2005. Then they were sent to Hong Kong for casing and final assemblies.

I pulled the trigger and purchased the 173, very happy with it
tippersteffi1 I want the 173 but my only concern are the green'ish lums, is it really noticeable?

I like the second hand on the 173 much more...
Actually I purchased my SKX173 on the jubilet bracelet, as it looked so good! I actually got a lot of compliments on that watch!
I love the skx. So much I bought the skx007 then bought the 009. Overkill? Not in my opinion.

I love the sharper edges to the hour markers! I love my 009 and I can see this being a tough choice for newer people looking into entry level divers. Great comparison!
+Shawn T Thanks!
Just buy both ;)
Nice review. I recently bought 007 from Japan on Amazon. 7 days delivered.

+Robert Bergstrom Thanks!
Great comparison, they both look very good and robust, which is what I'm looking for atm. Just need to decide between the black vs red/blue!
+Nikklas57 Not an easy choice!
the skx 173n is the same look (only slightly larger) than my 6309-7290....

my skx is from singapore and its from 1993 so mines a bidt more rare than the malaysia one i love it nice patina on it and everything
Seiko Daiber's skx 173😎👍
Skx007 by a mile. An SKX should have round indices.
I noticed the loom on the second hands are different. I like the 173s
Wich one is better lume????
How can I tell the age of my watch ? I mean how old is it ? Just bought a skx173 with Singapore movement..
thank you for the video.
Hi Marc, do you expect the SKX173 to come back into stock? Thanks.
Not looking good at this point.
The 173 is brighter use to own one sold it to a pawnshop for $50 it would never keep time picking up about 10 minutes a day and somehow I put a larger scratch in the Christel
007 all the way, baby! ohh yeah!
My Seiko Divers watch it looks like the 007 model I am in the US but it states Japan on the back on the watch, any ideas of which model I have?
Do you still sell the skx173 rubber strap?
Thanks for the detailed info! Do you guys sell metal bracelets for the 013 with end caps? I'm thinking about replacing my jubilee with something a bit more bulky.
www.longislandwatch.com/Seiko_44G2JZ_Watch_Bracelet_p/44g2jz.htm
Are these the same size as the submariners?
close; a bit bigger than the subs.
Excelente comparación,me gustaría que hicieran videos en español ya que no se habla de este reloj en español
Which skx007 is made in Japan? SKX007j? Thanks!
Yes.
Am considering a sapphire Flat w/ ar. inside. Do it? Worth it? Love my skx. Can a 775 be ordered with sapphire?
+Gary Cappelletti I can't speak to the 775, but the SKX is a keeper. If you have a good mod like that, do it!

Yes... ok... I will email you. Thanks in advance.
Isn't that normal for the watch movement? Due diligence?
Thanks Marc!

Marc, is there a major difference in the straps other than the shape (waved vs. rigid)? Does one feel better than the other?
+Davis Trice In my opinion, the 4F24ZZ strap (the one on the 173) is more comfortable. www.longislandwatch.com/Seiko_4F24ZZ_Rubber_Dive_Strap_p/4f24zz.htm
Can you buy an oyster style bracelet made by Seiko for the 007?
There are after market bracelets that are oyster style, but we do not sell any.
I hate the strap on the skx007. Does some sell the skz007 with the strap the you show on the skx173 ? does the rubber strap on the skx173 fit on the skx07 ? Thanks for the good video :-)
Thomas Dietz fits
Mark great video, are both the 173 and 007 the same size? Thanks for posting
+tippersteffi1 yes, pretty much!
+Long Island Watch thanks for the quick reply
My old Seiko looks like the 173 but it has no day. It has date only. It says 7002-7039 AO. Singapore. Can you tell me more about my watch? Thanks

Can I buy any of these 2 watches from your website?
Yes. Please see the video description for links to the items.
great vid....thanks!!!!
Thanks!
My 03' 173 caseback got a bit scratched up. Do you know if I can order up a identical OEM caseback for it?
Try to contact SeikoServiceUSA; they might be able to help you.
Thank You

Joseph Atnip that you paid for...?
I own that 007k2 and that 173 looks identical? Why would people buy one over the other?
The 173 is indeed different.
Hi Marc, quick question: 22 Super Oyster II will it fit the 173?
+Constantin Andreca If it fits the 007, it should fit this one.
+Long Island Watch I'm wearing it with Super OYSTER2 w/ divers ext. Love it. It what the piece always needed.
Hey, why are there different models for North America and outside of North America?
Different arms of Seiko.
Thanks
Hi mark, when can you restock skx007?
Maybe in 1 to 2 weeks we get some more; not many!
Thanks, I'll look out for it.
God, they were saying the SUG089 was discontinued ever since they came out.
I've been looking at the 007 for a while, but having seen the 173 I much prefer this model, unfortunately it's not available in the uk
Ahhh man, I was well pumped to get this
We have the 173 in stock now.

Is there a Seiko original President bracelet?
+trd75sf Not that these watches were ever offered on.
+Long Island Watch
Oh okay thanks
Made in my country!!
jamesc Rodents have countries?
Malaysia?
The 173 also has a small luma pip at the 3 o'clock position whereas the 007 does not.
Why is the 173 more expensive?
B scott because they make less of them
Also, that 173 has a weird way of looking a tad bigger in dia.
bah, I don't like the 173 but that's all you have in stock right now :(
Make a review of the VOSTOK-EUROPE brand .
Yes, I will.
Anyone want to sell his SKX173 ?
The 007 is better looking All the way, the twelve marker on 12h on 173 is very ugly.
Please do home work... Thanks
嘻嘻嘻
These are $200 shitters why is this guy wearing white gloves like these are some kind of rare horology examples.
+Keith Stewart The reason is quite simple. I want you to focus on the watches, not on my hands that are dry, cracked, splitting and look like, well, as you so politely put, "shitters".
Keith Stewart , dumb est comment ever
Are the crystals the same dimensions?
+Gary Cappelletti Not only the same size, same part number. Seiko PN 315P15HN02
Thanks!
I have the 173, I like the face better. Not a copy. Mine has and says mvt. Singapore. Any significance?
+Gary Cappelletti No. Being an official USA import, there are several CO requirements (country of origin) that must be inscribed on the piece. Requirements change, as do the locations where they churn these out.
