The young ones were axed because they were following her kicking sand in one scene. The boy was because he betrayed her and also made her uncomfortable. All the murders were for a reason, do a rewatch and you'll find things you didn't notice before, love the reaction to one of my favorite classics!

People watching Sleepaway Camp nowadays are at a disadvantage because of the hype. It used to be a pretty unknown movie; the kind of movie you’d rent on VHS after you had already seen all of the big horror movies, not really knowing anything about it and expecting just a standard slasher. It is a surprising movie under those conditions. Its quirkiness and audacity make it stand out from the many, many mediocre slasher films out there. And, of course, that ending.

I bought Day of the Dead on VHS back in '95 and Sleepaway Camp was added as a bonus feature on the tape. I knew nothing about it going in, didn't care for it at all, and the ending left me cold. I still don't like the film very much now that I'm old, but I've come to admire the fx make-up and the ending.

Fun Fact: The cop thought they were done with him, so he accepted another acting job elsewhere that required him to be clean shaven.
When he was called back to the Sleepaway set, they had to make a fake moustache with tape and hoped that people wouldn't notice...
    They noticed!

I got to meet Felissa Rose (Angela) at an event in February of this year on my birthday. She is super nice, funny, and so cool! We watched Sleepaway Camp and she commentated throughout. She considers it a comedy!! Lots of funny stories and behind the scenes info and even a few things I didn't know about. She really loves the fans and thanks the movie and fans for making her career. I got to talk to her myself for about 5 minutes or so and she signed an 8 x 10 of "the face" from the end of the movie and also signed my blu-ray for my birthday. I also got to take 2 pictures with her with my phone. She insisted on making "the face" in one photo! I really hope I get to meet her again sometime. She is an awesome person and completely down to earth. If you get a chance....meet her...You won't regret it!🤘🏻👍🏼

One weekend, my sisters and I and a couple of cousins were staying with an aunt of ours. We all loved her, and she was the "cool aunt", which meant she would let us stay up all night, eat junk food, and watch R-rated movies. We rented two scary movies from the video store, this film and its sequel. The second movie never made it out of its box. • @monalisasmile6629

Angela never harmed those who were nice to her - Susie, Ronnie and of course her loyal and protective cousin Ricky. Or those who pretty much left her alone and ignored her.
The children were hacked to death because they threw sand at her. That's the only reason. Seems trivial to a sane person but for Angela - it wasn't. She remembered...That sealed their fate.
The counselor and the two kids who wanted to return to the main camp, were the lucky ones!
Mel was killed because he beat Ricky to an inch of his life. Otherwise he would've lived.
Paul was killed because he betrayed Angela by kissing Judy - that sealed his fate.
So none of the victims were random kills. There was a motive for each kill.

Men are allowed to have freedom of expression in this country too...women are not the only ones allowed to wear small shorts and show there bodies off...you have good looking men with bodies who can wear small shorts.
You had to have a good body to wear them...at least a washboard stomach or a six pack...back then slot of break dancers wear half shirts, net shorts see through but they had amazing bodies...they had a 8 pack and a V line and washboard stomacks... if you have a body man or women they should need allowed to Express themselves and wear what makes them comfortable not what other guys who suffer from fragile Masculinity...who try to dictate what guys should wear and be.
I like that men back then were free to wear what they wanted...if you workout and have the body why not....you have fat chicks and busted chicks walking into walmarts wearing small ass shorts and half shirts when they have rolls everywhere and they are gigantic, some women shouldn't be wearing small anything...nobody says shit when they do it...But as soon as you have men who have bodies and are athletic wearing something to show there bodies...insecure men who are uncomfortable in their own skin have a heart attack...it's hypocrisy.

Quick story: a group of us got together to have a horror movie binge-fest, and naturally someone brought Sleepaway Camp. I was the only one who'd seen it, and the end still freaked me out, so when the scene came up, I left the room. When it was over, I walked back in to see everyone sitting there in complete silence (we were all in 6th grade, so we were still young). After about five minutes, this one kid named Kevin looked at everyone and said, "Dude...how big was her shlong?"
    Kinda lightened the mood.

This movie captures so much of the era that you really don't generally see in movies, from the fashion to slang and even how inappropriate things were at the time. Granted, this film is pretty heavy handed with it. As for the acting, yes, most of it is subpar but that's also a good deal of the charm. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece to be entertaining, thought provoking, shocking, and good. There are characters from this film that I will remember more than many well acted portrayals in other films, not sure if that's a good thing but it's worth noting.

This is objectively not a good movie, but I love it so much. The ending gets all the attention, but there are some really strange and hilarious things about this movie that I love and that make me love the movie more than all the summer camp movies it's ripping off. Aunt Martha's weirdness, the bizarreness of Meg going on a date with Mel, Judy's shirt with her own name on it, Ricky's cowboy hat, Ronnie's disturbingly short shorts, "Heeeey-bob-a-ree-bob!," "eat shit and live," the ridiculously long baseball scene with TWO SEPARATE TIME DISSOLVES, that amazingly terrible fake mustache, and a lot of creative kills (curling iron WTF?!) make this an all-time favorite for me.
Having said all that, I definitely understand people being put off by the ending and I won't dare argue with it.

Never really seen a Horror explore abuse in this way. Peadophilia, emotional abuse, PTSD, early trauma, suppressed anger, triggers, phobias, gender and identity issues. The list goes on. The way the flashbacks were kind of foggy showed that she had those events in her subconscious memory. Then you have the practical effects which were really well crafted. Yes, the acting wasn't great but it's more about the disturbing themes with this one. It's a 7 from me.

C'mon guys.... this is a pretty cool film. At least we had real kids getting killed, not 20 somethings acting as kids like in other Camp films. Early in the film the mother mentions something about their medical records, so Ricky knows that Angela is really a boy. The actor playing Judy was also up for the role of Angela, but the director said to the actors that he wanted them just to sit down and stare into space whilst eating an ice cream, and when he saw actress Felissa Rose do it, he immediately told her she'd got the part. The cop with the fake moustache had done his parts in the film, when he was called back for a few more shots, but by then the he had shaved off his moustache, so they gave him a fake one.

The dream sequence with the kids in the bed basically gives away the ending once you go back and watch it. The boy is pointing at the girl indicating that he is now the girl or that’s how I’ve always interpreted it.

Such a freaky movie with that ending. I actually saw this on VHS as a kid in the 80s...then had not seen it again until 2 years ago. I was surprised it had sequels.

😂😂😂 Oh man I was giggling all the way through that, waiting for that final reveal 😂😂😂 your reaction didn't disappoint 😂
Personally I think this is a pretty pants film 5/10 and the twist was the only thing I remember from it, but I haven't seen it in 25 years and what I saw was the UK vhs rental which is heavily cut and called Nightmare Vacation.
    You really should look at
The Burning my favourite of the early 80s camp slashers.
That banger your looking for I recommend
John Carpenters In the mouth of Madneas

This was one of those 80s movies that had amazing cover art....I always wanted to watch it as a kid but was never allowed to till I bought the "First Aid Kit" package of the first 4 movies. It's well worth it since there are so many great extras....like how they still won't divulge how the arrow through the neck was done. However, in the commentary they do address the mustache on the cop, seems he shaved for another role and didn't realize he was still needed for this one. Great reaction, thank you!

Interesting. Sleepaway Camp and Night Of The Creeps rate very high for me. Both I missed as a kid when I was obsessed with seeing any horror I could get my hands on but were very pleasant surprises seeing them as an adult. Neither are super heavy hitters of the genre but they're super fun and interesting. Both I rewatch the hell out of.

Nice one! If you google Sleepaway Camp you'll find people complaining it's transmisogynistic ("transmisogynistic." Scrabble players, take note!) Screw that, this is a gem of a slasher flick: the plot keeps you guessing, it has dollops of weirdness and effective kills, and you get a twist ending with a chilling final shot. Exploitative? Of course! But the 1980's was the Wild West of horror exploitation--filmmakers would try ANYTHING. And props to the Sleepaway Camp team for differentiating a wee bit from Friday The 13th.

Another way to look at it, the boy was forced to adopt a gender identity other than his own, much like some segments of society want to force an alien identity upon transgender people. The end result in both scenarios is trauma and tragedy.

When I was a kid in the late 80's, this was out on VHS under the name Nightmare Vacation and it was up there with Elm Street films for scaring shit out people, that bit with everyone chopped up with an axe was breaking point for many a 13 year old. There was two sequels that just are tonally different and aim more for comedy, actually there's several more sequels after those even but I know nothing about those.

When I saw this in the 80's, in a movie theater (YES, I'm old!), the audience reacted with big laughs, as if it was a John Waters parody of a horror/slasher. I remember the collective groan from the audience for the final scene.

The black cook is Robert Earl Jones, James Earl Jones’s father. Aunt Martha (Richard’s mom and Angela’s aunt) is not only a doctor, but a psychiatrist. When Angela and Peter were spying on their two dads making love and later played post office with each other, they’d have realized that Peter couldn’t get away with being Angela without being very discreet.

The "Castrating Mother" archetype has been a trope in slasher flicks from the beginning, think Psycho. Sleepaway Camp subverts the trope by pushing it over the edge.

  • @solomongrundy1696

I remember renting this as a kid. I saw the cover of Sleepaway Camp 2. Where she had Freddy's Glove and Jason's Mask. Immediately had my interest. But since it was the sequel, i decided to get the first one first. I remember being freaked out by the ending.
If you are looking for a banger of a film. I suggest Trick 'r Treat or the new Candyman.
