My new self produced album is out, proof these tips work I guess. Recorded in my home studio. It's not generic garbage, trust me: distrokid.com/hyperfollow/cthreep/karma-harm
I'm on the same path bro. Great job. I'm a drummer but play a little guitar now. How about the "Boo Fighters" nah I should rehash my old bands name "KNUCKLE SANDWICH", always loved that name. Seriously though, I'm undecided on learning the bass and doing vocals. Definitely writing lyrics at least...
Well, it's really just a plugin that renders a file, but does the job. I prefer a nice integrated metronome in a DAW so you can quickly change things, but by all means you should work with whatever you have
one suggestion: Generally we record a scratch with the whole band together, then we go again with each individual instrument. At the end just delete the scratch and we r done :)
I've been playing since 1968, toured for years as a sideman, played on studio projects, taught. blah blah blah. I am 67, which makes me an old school analog guy.in a digital world which is why I am here. I am grateful that you put everything I need to know on a video that is geared towards an absolute "beginner". I've watched enough videos to know what's good and what's not ....yours is excellent. Thanks1
Nice video for absolute beginners. I would just like to add, in place of the metronome track, the band can first try to do a "rough" recording of everyone jamming/playing the song as they would normally would. Doesnt have to be high quality, just good enough that everyone is content with the tempo, timings, etc. Then the drummer, or who ever records first can use that as a guide. That way, it would still be pretty organic, not too robotic like playing with a fixed tempo, and the drummer would have better idea on where he actually is in the song. That's because i have jammed and recorded some artist who sometimes use certain words in the lyrics as queues on what they are going to do next.
By far one of the better instruction videos. Didn't waste much time with unnecessary chat and a synopsis of one's life story. Thanks. I'll watch other videos when necessary.
Your brake down of the home recording process was Simple Perfect! Unambiguous at its finest!! I have lost count of the many videos I've watched in trying to retrieve solid inception fundamentals. Your video allowed me to free my mind from all of the convoluted and over explained information I've gathered from videos in the past. You partitioned the process perfect for me and I truly thank you for that my friend. Cheers 🍻 !!!
I got stuck and have been putting off my overdubbing recording because I couldn't figure out how to sync the tempo of all the different tracks together. Learning that you can add a metronome track solves that problem. Thank you so much!
Unlike our Pond water! I bought 12 beautifully colourful Goldfish and very carefully placed them into our pond. Unfortunately there has been no sign of them since Monday/Tuesday! Where are they?
Thank you for this simple explanation. Now I know I can start recording my music. I appreciate how straightforward this is. I will continue checking out your videos as I try these methods.
Thanks Threep. Iv been using Audacity for quite some time myself now too besides, ( & I have the BLUE Snowball Mic) and you taught me something new regarding how to create a Click Track on it...So I paused your vid and brought up Audacity, created the click track and grabbed my Guitar and started playing a song Ive composed, its done except I still have to Record it , then of course afterwards Mix & Master.I see you are wearing the Auudio Technicas.btw, I got the same exact type based on your recommendation when I was inquiring with you earlier this year, I bought them in July-August this year. The ATH M50X. Thanks for everything. hazppy Holidays. Glad to see you making more Vids brother GOD Bless & Cheers
Thank you so much. I'm a solo song writer and getting my songs from just me playing and singing to actual finished, recorded songs has been a massive barrier for me.
The only bits I would slightly contend with are: 1. I know you're aware of it, but I wouldn't consider it too advanced to give the advice to make a scratch track and play that through the drummer's headphones while he records first. For the uninitiated, record the whole band through the mic as per the first method, and then play that through the drummer's headphones so he hears the whole band while he records his part doing the second method. 2. If you're a band, you probably already have at least one stage microphone and XLR cables. An interface isn't a bad idea since it's the only piece you should be missing. If you have several mics, you might have a shot of better drum sound with the interface since you can separate the pieces. If the band has just a little more technical knowledge, you can reamp if the guitars record through a Scarlett (output while initially recording through the speaker outs). Overall, all good stuff.
Thanks a lot for this video! I'm starting a band and in 9th grade so I was unsure of how to do this. It was very helpful and I think I can follow the instructions clearly and understand them.
Thank you for this video. I just downloaded Audacity. Of course, I have many more questions but you did answer the basic ones that I had. I got lucky and purchased an M-Audio 2x2 at the local thrift store for $15, which made me very happy. Now I just need a couple more instruments and a good mic.
I think the most important thing isn't covered at all. If all the instruments start at the same time, how do you know when to begin playing? Does every drummer click his sticks together in the studio? There has to be a professional "sound engineer" way to start a song suddenly.
Let the click track play for a bar, then start playing your instrument when recording. Then the next instrument do the same. When you delete click track all instruments will start at the same time.
Thanks for this, despite playing guitar and writing songs for about 27 years, I'm only now beginning to record. This was most helpful. Added the Blue Yeti, a mic stand, and cables to my Amazon list to purchase soon. Thank you again!
Great tutorial! Thanks. Could you also teach us how to record video along with the audio? so that each track shows up in a separate window in the video?
also if the drummer or whatever is having a hard time laying down the first track why don't they just record one take of the whole song together to play off of.
because wasn't the whole point to get it perfectly 'on the beat' - hence the reason drums are going first? Total begginner here.... but that's what i got from the video
For the guys wondering how to record the video part, it's simple.... Play your audio track in background and act like you are playing the instrument or singing the song (playing you audio track in background is important because it'll help you maintain the tempo). Then just record every single instrument and vocals one by one with any decent camera.... That's how you record a music video..... And for the editing stuff, there are so many softwares (premiere pro, final cut Pro, or if you are a beginner then wondershare filmora will do the job). Just align your video tracks with each other, and put the background music, and you're done
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've watched so many vids that recommend XLR and etc... I but I just need the basic ideas down to send out to the musicians to practice and learn the tunes.

I appreciate how straightforward and simple you have made this video. I will be using sound tracks for some songs. What is the best way to record and hear when I record?
Latency is not a software issue, your mic and or audio interface is not recording correctly sometimes the audio interface has a button that says "direct monitor" that gets rid of the latency instantly
Fantastically simple and inexpensive suggestions. I have ProTools and I record with that, but I am always looking for simple ways to record that don't involve tons of expensive computer gear and costly Digital Audio Workspace (DAW) software. Your video is really great. Thanks.

Great tips, man! I think people tend to underestimate the power of Audacity sometimes, too. Sure, its not the best DAW out there, but there are still a lot of things that you can do in it. And its free! Our band just got finished releasing our second song a couple of days ago, and it was all created within Audacity. Love the segment about tempo, too, and using a click track while recording. I didn't even know that there were metronome apps out there that let you tap the rhythm to help you find your tempo. I'll definitely have to keep that in mind for when we record our next song! Anyways, keep the great videos coming, man! They're always appreciated.
