I cannot possibly think of any single game that is anywhere close to being as metal as the new Doom games....nothing comes close to making me want to lift weights while chugging beer and nutting ultra nightmare attempts
What i love most about this game is that MAKES you kill everything. You cannot progress until everything is dead. There is no stealthy missions where you dodge enemies because there’s too many of them. If there’s a horde of demons, too bad for them because it’s either you or them that’s dying. That’s what I’ve noticed in most games nowadays. Where there’s missions of a shit ton of enemies, you’re just gonna sneak your way through them because you can’t handle all of them. In Doom there’s not enough demons in hell to kill. If you want that door open to the next level you better make sure your the only thing alive. In most games you get chased by armies of enemies and barely escape. That’s key word. Escape. You don’t escape in Doom. You move forward.
Thing is I do remember the original Doom did have moments where you were fighting to survive. Having no ammo, just a pistol and thrown in a room where the only light is off the muzzle flash and surrounded by Barons, Pinkies and Cacodemons. You do have to move forward, but sometimes, carefully. I do miss that suspense.
Too many games nowadays are so busy "subverting expectations" that they're all the same, and avoiding the very power fantasy that DOOM and games like it were based on. You can carry 20 guns, never have to reload and can keep going as long as you find medpacks and armor. In the rush to be "most realistic", too many game designers forgot along the way that games were supposed to be FUN. An escape from reality. Realism has it's place, sure, and I enjoy things like flight sims, etc, but sometimes you just wanna rip a fucking demon in half with your bare hands and gobble up all the health they dropped so you can do it again.

Actually, stealth games usually have reactive soundtracks: different music per level per enemy awareness state. Take Splinter Cell for example: you start with a mysterious sneaky theme song at the start of the level, but then if you alert someone, the theme changes to something more ominous to build up the tension. You can feel your heart beat as the enemy gets closer and closer to discovering you, and then BAM! The music changes to an action theme because they've finally discovered your existence and have started to gun you down. But to hear DOOM take reactive soundtrack to the level it did, with a pure action, stealth-less game, that was next-level shit. I loved it.

I think as an achievement hunter, the hundreds of games I've played, I'm truly impressed that they somehow made the game based on moving around to survive, ESPECIALLY ON HIGHER DIFFICULTIES... it's insane to think that a high difficulty asks you to rush around and kill instead of take it slow is absolutely amazing.
As a Christian, I can confirm that killing demons in a video game will not lead you to worshiping them IRL. Doom is like a playable Demon Hunter album.
I've come to know doom for what doom 3. I prefer the horror aspect of it more than the action packed slaughterhouse, not saying that's a bad thing. Honestly you can go through doom 3 like the other doom games if you go quickly enough. It's just that it's slowed down by PDA door code shit and story.

I never understood the whole "if it shows satanic imagery it'll make kids worship satan" I used to hear it a lot with Diablo 2. Friends parents giving me shit for introducing their kid to diablo 2 saying it's ungodly and will turn their son over to the devil. We're literally KILLING Diablo, not worshipping him. In fact, you can play as a HOLY PALADIN, a religious knight that smites demons.
You tipped me over the edge and made me buy this game in 2022, shortly after discovering your channel. The game's feel activates the nostalgia center of my brain. I can't remember being able to move so fast in an FPS game since HL2 and its deathmatch multiplayer. It feels good knowing once I'm done with 2016 Doom, Doom Eternal is ready to go. It's so rare to see AAA games just absolutely nail it these days, much less after a 12-year hiatus.

One thing I love about the glory kills is how they demonstrate the slayers mindset, he just wants to kill as many demons as possible, but he’s also clearly got some person gripes as well and finds that ripping their heads in half is a good outlet for his frustration.
But as seen in the scene where he makes a back-up of Vega instead of completely erasing him, he is not a mindless killing machine; an unstoppable killing machine to be sure but not mindless or dumb like the demons he crushes.

I personally love doom's plot more for the characterization of doom guy. He is liteally ignoring the story and walking away from exposition because he doesn't care nor does he buy any of the other characters' BS. Its honestly the same critique you threw out at sci fi for having a society that is doing stupid shit "for science". Doom guy knows the only place demons blong in is hell, he will send every single one of them there single handedly if he has to and every excuse used to justify bringing demons on earth/ mars is not going to work.
One thing I find interesting is that in a lot of other fps games, players have some sort of "mission control" that drowns them in exposition, and usually tells them where to go and what to do. In some instances, this is is done in such an obnoxious way that we players get the impression the devs are speaking to us through mission control (which they are, naturally). Compare and contrast the Doomslayer's attitude towards mission control: Ignore it and do his own thing - he's basically the incarnation of a player that is fed up with just following someone else's orders, standing around passively while directions are relayed. Of course, the dev still is in full control of the player's goals (obviously), but this does a nice job of making the player feel like they are in charge.

The reason eternal's locations were so different is because they tried to give it that more arcade game feel, which is why there is so many more bright colors, it's more fast paced, and more traversals compared to a full level on constant combat. It was definitely weird after playing the darker doom 2016.

I cannot possibly think of any single game that is anywhere close to being as metal as the new Doom games....nothing comes close to making me want to lift weights while chugging beer and nutting ultra nightmare attempts

What i love most about this game is that MAKES you kill everything. You cannot progress until everything is dead. There is no stealthy missions where you dodge enemies because there’s too many of them. If there’s a horde of demons, too bad for them because it’s either you or them that’s dying. That’s what I’ve noticed in most games nowadays. Where there’s missions of a shit ton of enemies, you’re just gonna sneak your way through them because you can’t handle all of them. In Doom there’s not enough demons in hell to kill. If you want that door open to the next level you better make sure your the only thing alive. In most games you get chased by armies of enemies and barely escape. That’s key word. Escape. You don’t escape in Doom. You move forward.
Thing is I do remember the original Doom did have moments where you were fighting to survive. Having no ammo, just a pistol and thrown in a room where the only light is off the muzzle flash and surrounded by Barons, Pinkies and Cacodemons. You do have to move forward, but sometimes, carefully. I do miss that suspense.
This happens in Dead Space as well!

Too many games nowadays are so busy "subverting expectations" that they're all the same, and avoiding the very power fantasy that DOOM and games like it were based on. You can carry 20 guns, never have to reload and can keep going as long as you find medpacks and armor. In the rush to be "most realistic", too many game designers forgot along the way that games were supposed to be FUN. An escape from reality.
Realism has it's place, sure, and I enjoy things like flight sims, etc, but sometimes you just wanna rip a fucking demon in half with your bare hands and gobble up all the health they dropped so you can do it again.

Actually, stealth games usually have reactive soundtracks: different music per level per enemy awareness state. Take Splinter Cell for example: you start with a mysterious sneaky theme song at the start of the level, but then if you alert someone, the theme changes to something more ominous to build up the tension. You can feel your heart beat as the enemy gets closer and closer to discovering you, and then BAM! The music changes to an action theme because they've finally discovered your existence and have started to gun you down.
But to hear DOOM take reactive soundtrack to the level it did, with a pure action, stealth-less game, that was next-level shit. I loved it.

I think as an achievement hunter, the hundreds of games I've played, I'm truly impressed that they somehow made the game based on moving around to survive, ESPECIALLY ON HIGHER DIFFICULTIES... it's insane to think that a high difficulty asks you to rush around and kill instead of take it slow is absolutely amazing.
As a Christian, I can confirm that killing demons in a video game will not lead you to worshiping them IRL. Doom is like a playable Demon Hunter album.

You tipped me over the edge and made me buy this game in 2022, shortly after discovering your channel. The game's feel activates the nostalgia center of my brain. I can't remember being able to move so fast in an FPS game since HL2 and its deathmatch multiplayer. It feels good knowing once I'm done with 2016 Doom, Doom Eternal is ready to go. It's so rare to see AAA games just absolutely nail it these days, much less after a 12-year hiatus.

One thing I love about the glory kills is how they demonstrate the slayers mindset, he just wants to kill as many demons as possible, but he’s also clearly got some person gripes as well and finds that ripping their heads in half is a good outlet for his frustration.

But as seen in the scene where he makes a back-up of Vega instead of completely erasing him, he is not a mindless killing machine; an unstoppable killing machine to be sure but not mindless or dumb like the demons he crushes.

I personally love doom's plot more for the characterization of doom guy. He is liteally ignoring the story and walking away from exposition because he doesn't care nor does he buy any of the other characters' BS. Its honestly the same critique you threw out at sci fi for having a society that is doing stupid shit "for science". Doom guy knows the only place demons blong in is hell, he will send every single one of them there single handedly if he has to and every excuse used to justify bringing demons on earth/ mars is not going to work.
He likes the AI however.
One thing I find interesting is that in a lot of other fps games, players have some sort of "mission control" that drowns them in exposition, and usually tells them where to go and what to do. In some instances, this is is done in such an obnoxious way that we players get the impression the devs are speaking to us through mission control (which they are, naturally).
Compare and contrast the Doomslayer's attitude towards mission control: Ignore it and do his own thing - he's basically the incarnation of a player that is fed up with just following someone else's orders, standing around passively while directions are relayed. Of course, the dev still is in full control of the player's goals (obviously), but this does a nice job of making the player feel like they are in charge.

If only DOOM Eternal took this exact idea to heart. Awesome gameplay aside, DOOM Eternal did exactly that, it tried to force a lore-filled story in every single mission to the point where the locations didn't even look like they were from the same franchise.
gotta admit i loved urdak. legit was just sitting there in awe when i saw it... since theres no demons there when u first arrive i legit just sat there and looked at this place that is supposed to be "heaven"
The reason eternal's locations were so different is because they tried to give it that more arcade game feel, which is why there is so many more bright colors, it's more fast paced, and more traversals compared to a full level on constant combat. It was definitely weird after playing the darker doom 2016.

But 2016 without the bad ammo economy and more constant action without certain demons that break the flow like Marauder just feels so much better

Doom 2016 is the equivalent of playing a horror game where you play as the biggest, baddest fucking killer in the game.
Other games: You're trapped in a room with demons.
DooM: Demons are trapped in a room with you.
When I heard the doom music rolling in I got goosebumps, that's when you know it's really fucking awesome.
