    The army sells used shells, you just have to look for such deals. They're made of what is called "new brass",. 63% Cu and 37% Zn and the melting point is somewhere around 840°C. According to what you intend to do with it, after melting it you can add some Pb for further turning it, or some Al for further hot pressing.

    Do you realize that shell case could have been sold for way, way more that the brass you recovered? They are pretty expensive...

    Why do the Russians make their cartridge cases from steel, and everyone else's from brass? steel is 6 times cheaper than brass.
