I find this subject particularly interesting as I got serious about chess when I was already significantly older than these two are today. Yet, within a few years I managed to get all my online ratings above 2k with bullet being my strength hitting 2400. I did this primarily through playing lots of games and consuming chess content on yt on a daily basis. About 1.5 years ago I decided to get serious about chess as I felt that I hit a ceiling - a ceiling determined by lack of knowledge as opposed to a biological ceiling. I firmly believe that I'm still improving and will easily gain another 200 rating points if I continue playing and training. So, I agree, I don't think 40 or even 50 years old is a cognitive death sentence. Human potential is truly limitless and we just need to find what works for us. Maybe even a 60 year old can make a lot of progress in chess if they are in good health and have the discipline to spend hours a day on chess.
