as someone who reads +200 books a year, i always chuckle at the "but you aren't retaining it, you aren't remembering it". why do i have to? i'm not writing a book report on it. there isn't a final exam. so what if i read a book and forget it 5 minutes later? if i enjoy reading it in the moment, why does it need to be bigger than that? yea there are books that stay with me, of course. but reading doesn't need to be any more than an enjoyment of the read (unless you want it to be, of course)
💯
lmao good point!!
Exactly! I mean, will everyone be able to retell each episode of a series in detail?! I don't think so... so why should they want us to be able to read as if we're meant to be memorizing the books?
exactly! and the ones that you enjoy you WILL remember, and those are the ones that matter
Fair enough, I suppose~ Lol
To each their own! ^-^
Can 2024 be the year we stop policing other readers in general? Whether it’s judging people’s reading speeds, or how they consume the book, or even the content of the book, I’m sick and tired of people judging and policing how others read!!
YAASSSS, plz!!!💪🏼👏🏻👏🏻💜🤍🩶💖
Rereading books is a waste of time had my jaw on the floor. How is it any different than re-watching movies or TV? Listening to the same song 10x in a row? It’s about recreating the feeling elicited by that first steamroll of emotion for me, but hey, we need the hot takes to balance out the ecosystem I guess.
Like you said, it’s about one’s ultimate “why” we read.
This is my hot take but I completely understand all your points! This take is a personal opinion rather than a judgement on others because I do understand why people enjoy rereads. (realizing maybe idk what a hot take really is LMAO) I just don’t like to reread books myself and find them a waste of my time with all the books on my tbr. I have a strong intrusive thought of not being able to read all the books I want to before I die. 😂
Sometimes.. it can be even more than that, because sometimes you'll notice or have stand out to you different things than the first time around, or something will hit differently or mean something different to you either because you now know something you didn't know originally or because you're in a slightly different place mentally and/or emotionally or because you've lived different life experiences or whatever.
Not personally enjoying rereads would be one thing-but to literally say it has zero possible value ever at all?? ? WILD! (I almost even wonder if they just tried to imagine what would be the absolute hottest or most controversy-stirring take possible and then said it without even believing it, but it honestly wouldn't surprise me if someone really does just genuinely have this take on it, I put basically nothing past people.😂)
I LOVE rereading books. I also rewatch the same movies 1000 times. I just watched PS I Love You and I can practically recite the whole movie. lol I guess if some don’t like it, they don’t have to. I personally need rereads in my life.
I generally read for plot and don’t have many feelings associated with certain books, so for me, re-reading is a waste of time. Like there’s no point in me re-reading a book when I already know how it ends, same goes for a movie or TV show I’ve already seen. I agree that the “why” we read is super important to consider. :))
@@MY-ho7mt Totally fair 🙂🤍
The real struggle is loving romance but not liking cartoon covers OR shirtless men covers.
Willow Winters has multiple covers for all of her books, so you can pick whichever style you like!
@@taylorgayhart9497 thanks for rec!
I agree! I do prefer the illustrated covers - I can't read a book with a real person on the cover, I don't know why. But I really want covers that just have a design or object on it. My favorite cover is "The Measure" - it's so beautiful!!
I do like cartoon covers, but I really hate the shirtless man covers. Really the only covers with real people that I like have to have pretty dresses in them. If the woman on the cover is wearing a pretty dress, I’m going to pick that up and at least read the back of it.
Studies show listening to a audiobook & reading a book is retained the same in the brain, it’s super ableist of those who think listening to a audiobook doesn’t count as reading
Definitely ableist! I still struggle with feeling shame when I clarify in a conversation that I listen to books instead of reading them. However, if audiobooks weren't available, I wouldn't be able to consume books at all. I have both neck pain and vision issues that make reading incredibly uncomfortable if not painful. The rise of audiobooks brought me back to consuming books 💜 And my grandmother who is blind relies on audiobooks as her sole form of consuming story-based media. It's so frustrating for there to still be a stigma around them.
This just reminded me of a mutual friend of mine who claimed that reading fiction ( as opposed to non-fiction, like self help books ) is a waste of time because you’re not ‘gaining’ any ‘knowledge’ from it?!?
I feel like this kinda goes hand in hand with people who claim that reading has become a ‘trend’ and that people are only doing it for the aesthetic instead of being happy that more people are getting into reading? Booktok girlies especially are subjected to so much slander and for what? God forbid a girl has hobbies
Tbf, booktok has had a very negative effect on the publishing industry. Particularly, their advocacy of including spice in YA books with main characters who are minors.
Someone did this to me, but about learning taxes. And I said I have TurboTax for that, why would I need to learn something I have no interest in doing myself 😂. I do read self-help and other nonfiction, but on subjects that interest me.
I have learned a lot from fiction. Sometimes it's something simple like browning butter makes eggs taste better and sometimes it's how to deal with conflict in a healthier way. My step dad things fiction is a waste of his time but doesn't look down on people who read fiction either. I do not understand why anyone would care what others do with their time. If they want to read fanfic and that's all, why would anyone care. It's their free time to do with as they please.
People who only read nonfiction have this tendency to be so condescending, like god forbid I want some escapism.
And my family will judge me for reading over watching tv, and I’m just like, those who get it get it, those who don’t don’t 🤷🏼♀️
Ooo there's definitely a difference between reading slower and being happy with what you are able to read and then being upset that other people read more than you. We all have our different paces! I think it's nice to see creators normalizing slower reading but only if it stops there. No need to go further and make people who read fast feel bad about their pace. We are all reading at the end of the day and that should be what is celebrated.
Just yesterday seen someone on the Tok app, saying if you read 100+ books a year, you aren’t a real reader because there’s no way you can retain that much 🥴🙄
“If you do this thing too much it doesn’t count” like what??? 😂
oooooooof. i wonder if that person would also say that folks who run multiple marathons a year aren't runners. or folks who paint every day aren't artists. the math ain't mathin'!
It can also depend a lot on your stage of life too! Certain stages of life are going to require more time and energy spent on things that aren’t your hobby, and in others you’ll have more time for your hobbies
To whoever said that people who read 300 books in a year can't remember them. I would like to say I've only read around 60 books this year and I don't remember them all. 😅 You really don't have to remember all the books to have enjoyed them.
My mom probably reads 20-30 books a year, maybe less, she never keeps track. But as soon as she’s done with a book it’s out of her mind. I could ask her about a book she finished last week, and she’d be like 🤷🏼♀️
I hate read for fun sometimes. I did it before making a booktube channel, sometimes it's just nice to read something that's almost so bad you enjoy the experience
That being said I saw recently a booktuber saying hate reading is toxic and shouldn't be done on booktube so who knows. I think it's just fun, as long as no one attacks the author of course.
I also have JOMO (Joy of missing out) the more hype something has, the more I don't want to read it. I'm surprised someone else felt the same, I feel validated 😂
Dub con actually makes sense if you look up insecure attachment/attachment theory 'Come As You Are' is a really good book to pick up if you have questions about real sex, attachment and consent.
Omg yes thank you for saying that it’s slightly ableist to say that audiobooks don’t count as reading! I used to LOVE reading physical books, but I got sick a few years ago and can no longer read without getting horrendous migraines, so audiobooks have been the biggest blessing
I was coming here to say this!! I get headaches if I read physical books. Someone saying, listening to an audiobook isn't reading, is soo frustrating. Tho I have also heard people saying that it only counts if you NEED to consume a book that way... Like WTF. I don't see why it's anyone's business how I get the info into my brain. I have found tho that the people who complain the most about it are those who get mad when someone has read more books in the month. Like audiobooks are cheating somehow. It's not a contest FFS. I just happen to have a lot more free time than the average person, so am able to read more books.
“Ableist” lmao
I used to be a person who thought audiobooks isn’t “reading” but then I saw something, I think it was here on booktube where someone said would you tell a blind person that them listening to a book isn’t reading? And that totally changed my mind. I’m now an audiobook person and definitely count them towards my read list
Yes, I would tell a blind person that. They are still listening to the book and not reading it
"I want to be someone who enjoys things" That line just really got me because saaaame. I love a good hyped book.
totally agree with your takes on booktok!! like if you have a shitty FYP that’s not the booktok content creator’s fault lmao. there are truly so many really great booktok accounts out there, you just have to put in the work to find them. and it’s not even fuckin “work” it’s just typing genres or authors you like in the search bar
i adore your ability to admit to admit you've changed your mind and that maybe you were wrong before, it's very refreshing !
I reread my favourite books the same way I rewatch my favourite shows. Remembering the plot points is not the same as experiencing it from beginning to end. I enjoy them every time but I understand if there are people who find it boring!
Thanks for pointing out the ableism of thinking audio books don't count.
Damn some of these are harsh.I don't particularly like most of the books made known by booktok but as long as people are reading it doesn't really matter.I prefers cartoon covers on my romance books which seems to be an unpopular opinion on YT.
I love cartoon covers! I hate real people, especially shirtless men, on book covers tho :D
Yes on the audiobook speed! I listen at 2.6-2.8 unless there’s an accent and I’m so tired of being told there’s no way I can comprehend what I’m reading at that speed. If I’m struggling to understand the narrator, I will slow it down but usually I’m fine. But never 1x speed for me because frankly it drives me crazy. I talk fast and 1x speed doesn’t sound “natural” to me but I know other people feel the same about 2.8 so 🤷🏻♀️
Same, 1x speed distracts me so much. My brain will start to wander and I just can't do it
@@brandylarsson978 yes same! I will completely tune it out if it’s too slow and then the comprehension is obviously gone 😂
1x speed sounds like slow motion to me. I like to listen at about 2.5x speed.
Thank you for your kind responses to some of these! I agree that thinking audiobooks don't count towards reading goals is ableist (whether that's intended or not)-what about people with impaired vision or neurodevelopmental disorders? For the record, I don't typically read audiobooks, but that's because I have the privilege to have a choice.
I would think that the reason audiobooks shouldn’t count is because technically you are not reading, you are listening. I’m not saying I agree (I count them toward my goal), but technically speaking it’s not reading.
@@Shoshfishactually it’s opposite, to read is to take in the information from a text (letters/symbols), you can use three of your senses to do so, sight, sound, and touch. So yes, if you listened to an audiobook you consumed that text, so you technically read it.
@@taylorgayhart9497 I guess that’s true. I kind of also forgot about braille, and I think everyone considers that reading
As a fellow fast reader I agree with everything you said about that!
As someone who does read not quite 200 books a year and has a damn good memory and so can retain most of what I read.....why does it matter if someone can or cannot remember what they read? We say this about no other type of media. No one complains that skmeone who watches 200 movies a year can't remember them all so why do we hold books to thay standard?
I hate it when creators review a book and in the review they tell us that "there was a huge plot twist that I didn't see coming". I understand what they're trying to do but it's doing the opposite effect on me 😅 cause now I'm expecting it so the whole plot twist is ruined.
your reasoning for making videos actually makes lots of sense and it's mutually benificial lmao
I may not remember all plot points but I always remember the way a book made me feel
23:50 this point is why you're my favorite booktuber! I have found so many books I enjoyed (that you didn't) just based on your descriptions of them.
thanks for reading my hot take on booktok! I agree completely with the points you made it's about finding creators with similar tastes esp in a very short video. there is something for everyone!
as someone who doesnt live in the us, uk or canada but mainly read in english i'm way more interested in indie romance because it's easier to acess, i read it on kindle unlimited or it's way cheaper to buy the e-book. even when the book gets tradicionally publish in my country, it's so expensive 😭 indie romances are literally life saving for me - and my hot take it's that it's sad some indie authors are picked up for tradicionally publishing and stop keeping their books on ku (like what happened to elsie silver). im happy for them, but sad for the international readers like myself.
that's so odd that the books aren't available on KU internationally anymore. here in the states, Elsie is traditionally published in the sense that you can get her books in stores but her stuff is still available in KU as well. that sucks!
Its really weird that her books are not in internacional ku! Sometimes here in Brasil, a publishing house will pick up authors, translate and it comes back to ku, but not always. And the books here are really expensive, unfortunately
i know that a similar thing happened with Devney Perry as well :/ only available in the US and Canada
@@emmiesreads yes! her most famous series, the edens, it's not available anymore, but some of her other books are, i read coach in ku earlier this year
Potentially part of the contracts they sign with publishing companies?
Similar to how streaming platforms don’t always have the same shows in every country, it’s all dependent on who has the rights to the distribution and all that kind of behind the scenes stuff. So I wonder if this is the same
omg when I first got my reddit acc, i made a post on the romance book sub reddit about why people read non con & dub con. not from a place of judgement & ick but i just felt like i was missing the point or the idea with which i should go into the book to enjoy it more? although it is fictional, i found it so hard to root for two characters to be together when one of them is a literal assaulter and the other a victim of the same assaulter. i think that's quite literally the only non redeeming quality for me in a fictional man. i was rlly surprised at the responses. a LOT of readers of these tropes talk about how it's a way of processing trauma for themselves (as victims of any kind of assault or abuse) because they will never get that redemption from their assaulters irl or an apology or any sort of closure or justice and seeing that sort of closure happen in books is cathartic for them. (not all books have redemption or closure for the characters but there are books where the fmc takes back her power at the end & is empowering to see). for others it's a safe way to explore kinks. for others it's the whole notion that "he wants me so badly that he doesn't even care about my consent" that is alluring (fictionally) but the responses were so insightful and interesting to me tbh! (linking the post:www.reddit.com/r/RomanceBooks/s/bZVbJ9502D )
will i read another non con or dub con? i don't know, i don't think so. unless there's an extremely powerful message or written very well, it's not for me. but it helped me understand things better and see people's pov!
I'm not super comfortable with it either, I would never root for a love interest if it involves non con (dub con if it's consensual maybe) but that being said I understand people use this to process their trauma because I do the same with bully romances. I never thought I'd like them since I was so severely bullied growing up, but the idea of the the love interest going back and treating them well and changing their ideals and thoughts on them makes it feel....healing in a way I guess. I wish I was apologized to for the years of things said to me, but since that is never happening, bully romance oddly helps in some way. So I completely think their thoughts are valid too and I can't judge that.
@@BooksToAshes i super agree. so sorry for what you've had to endure but also so glad that you have found solace in romance books. always a joy to see people using romance books as a way of healing!
I agree with this, I think books are a great way for people to process all kinds of emotions, including trauma. My issue is when the book doesn’t acknowledge what’s wrong about their behavior but instead portrays it positively.
yes!! i also see similar arguments made for really intense horror books. i’m all for people being able to process trauma or feel seen in books.
@@anoushkaps2164 Thank you ❤❤
Btw people simply having library cards does a LOT for the support they get and proof of their worth for governmental entities etc. So even if you love buying books (which is totally fine especially not on Amazon) getting a card and getting the people in your life to sign up for library cards goes a longgg way in aiding in the longevity of libraries
The audiobook trope about them, not counting towards reading goal. I also agree with the fact that it’s ablest because my husband has a learning disorder he’s had it since he was little and he never reads in like I’ll tell him about books that I really love means like oh that sounds so good so he listens to the audiobooks that doesn’t mean he’s not reading he’s still consuming a story that someone else wrote that’s just like saying e-books are because you can’t multitask that’s like saying if you walk on a treadmill and read at the same time you’re not reading like no that’s bullshit
I think most popular booktok recs are truly awful but I also really appreciate what tiktok has done for the book community, I felt like reading as a hobby was really starting to die out and now so many more people are reading and that makes me happy. I just love that people are enjoying books no matter what they are.
I'm a bit late to this video (so sorry) but concerning the DNF take, I will count a book as 'read' if I did not finish it, but ONLY if I've read more than 50-75%. If it's a 400 pg long book, I will count it as read above 300 pgs. But if I read only a small portion, then it goes in the DNF shelf on my Goodreads.
I honestly don’t think hate reading for views is bad; like I said, those videos are my bread and butter; they’re fun and entertaining. I just sometimes wish lesser known works or authors are talked about it so it’s not the same works getting attention.
I re-read things for the same reason I rewatch things, which is when I'm anxious there's comfort in knowing what will happen.
Getting an ereader really had changed my reading habits and definitely helped my spending. Additionally having access to my library ebooks is so great. Also yes, it's very interesting because on bookstagram I've seen a lot of people bash on fast readers, and people who listen to audiobooks. Which is so strange because why are we gate keeping reading?
My big one is that Colleen Hoover haters are actually so annoying now. It's fine that they don't like her books, but so many of them act so snobby. I am sick of comment sections just being full of hate comments because the creator liked/recommended a colleen hoover book. Half of them haven't even read any of her books. Like saying you don't like Colleen Hoover is not some genius opinion. You don't NEED to express your opinion whenever anyone breathes a word about her. I think it's comparable to Matthew Morrison, where people shit on someone without good reason just to shit on someone. Some of her books obviously aren't great, like November 9, but I bet most of them would receive very little hate if they had a different name on the cover.
Really enjoyed this video and agree with a lot of your thoughts. Let people read in the format and style they want! Reading goals are meant for the individual and nobody else, so count whatever you want!
As far as buying books: yess to the balanced approach: if NOBODY buys books then the publishing won’t won’t make books
I think people discount audiobooks cause you can zone out, but you can also skim physical books so i don't think thats a good excuse
As someone with ADD its very hard for me to read physicaly, i just cant always focus on letters and sentences LoL. however audiobooks are very easy to read and understand! My brain is stimulated as im doing other stuff like washing dishes, cleaning, doing make up, etc. i just need the extra stimulation sometimes😂
My feeling is that as long as I can find some books I enjoy, I’m golden. Don’t care how many books anybody else reads, what kind of books they read, or how they read them. However, if I set my goal at 200, I compete with myself to get there . 200 is a stretch for me. I live in East Texas. lol I talk slow, I read slow, I listen slow. Hell, I even walk slow. So it’s a big goal. I will say when I’ve seen new releases coming out, I haven’t seen many I’m just dying to read. I’m 58, so I’m not all that into why choose, hockey romances, college life books. I did love me some Giana Darling’s Fallen Men series, which is not my norm. If a tik tok starts with the word spice, I scroll fast so more won’t be showing up. I love romance. That’s my personal preference. I’ve been married twice… and divorced twice. I’ve had all the spice I want. lol I want the romance I missed. In the end, my general hot take is, do you. If I want tik tok to show me less spicy books, I search 1 pepper romance, and watch a bunch of those videos so it changes what I see on my fyp. There’s plenty content for everybody.
as you mentionned, i really don't get why people say that listening to an audiobook is lesser than physically reading it. I understand that you are not taking in the story with your eyes, and you may not be absorbing every word as the author would have liked (for litterure and stylistic purposes) but it's literally the exact same story wether it's read to you or if you read it with your own eyes??? Also, as a person who has a hard time getting through physical books bc of the amount of school work i have, audiobooks are a great way of reading while doing other things like my morning/night routing, doing dishes, taking my dog out for a walk, literally doing the things i do everyday bc i don't have time otherwise to read :)
* literature (for some reason i have a hard time writing this word lol)
**whether (i should reread myself before posting something...)
I think people who are SOLELY on booktok, or recently just got into it, might hold those "booktok is ruining books!!!" opinions because they haven't stepped outside that space and expanded their bookish world. i don't mean that to sound snobby, i just mean if you're in an echo chamber, after a while everything is going to feel same or tired.
It really grinds my gears when people shame fast readers because what's the harm?? It should not bother anyone else how fast or slow someone else reads. Personally, I feel disconnected from books when I read them slowly and I don't feel as immersed in the story as I do when I'm binge-reading.
I think a lot of people mistake stylistic choice differences as indications of "quality"-oftentimes when it's really not.
Spicy books are a really great example!
It's not necessarily low quality just because it's all about the D, especially not if that's literally and intentionally exactly what it was meant to be. Perfectly understandable if it's not what everyone is reading for, but that doesn't mean it can't still be written well(like grammatically or descriptively and such), and much like anything there are ways of writing things that will do the job it's trying to do either better or worse for people. So.. There can certainly be at least some level of skill and/or artistry necessary too-just in different ways. It's like comparing a horror movie to a romcom, or something; it's not even fair, because they aren't even trying to do/achieve remotely the same things/effects/whatever. Lol
Even complaining on the basis that it's lower "quality" specifically in the sense of the fact that it doesn't serve a good story or doesn't serve like as much deep literary food for potential thought or something isn't totally valid...because, again, it's often not even trying to do that. It's like saying dessert or a light breakfast is lesser quality than a hearty dinner meal because it has lower nutritional value or something-but, sometimes, nutritional value isn't the only value worth serving(and it can sometimes take just as much skill or time or effort to actually make a dessert food as to make a whole proper dinner/meal)!😹😹😁😆💜
I think it might help if more people more clearly understood the lines between the different genres or kinds of romance and other smutty/spicy/steamy books(or even that there are different types of them sometimes)-like romance, versus erotic romance, versus erotica, and so on. But, who knows, maybe that's just me grasping for straws or something.🤷🤷♀️🤷🏻♂️🤭🤣 IDKK!!!
Thank you for saying that romance doesn't necessarily have to be non-problematic! Are there romantic tropes/arcs that I hate? Yes! But that doesn't mean all romance stories should become PSAs. Fiction can and should be a safe space for messy, even fucked up dynamics because it's /fiction/ after all, not real life. Also if people aren't allowed to see problematic relationships in fiction, then how can they think about it, talk about it, and learn to see it in real life? Anyways, sorry for the mini-rant, and thanks for pushing back against back the idea that just because something is published, it means it is being "romanticized".
I like both shirtless and illustrated covers 😅I’ve also been able to read more because of audio (majority from the library), and listen on 3x. I normally forget about a lot of details from a book a week after, regardless of if I physically read it or listen.
The time during the pandinini where our proffessors uploaded their lectures as video made we incapable of watching or listeing to most stuff lile videos, podcasts or audiobook in anything under 2x speed
Every time you re read a book there is something new to be found in it imo
mine is: the more a book is hyped/ recommended, the less I want to read it.
As a dyslexic, I need to audio book books that purposefully misspell words otherwise I will always think that is how the word is spelled. My family also has ADD so my mom, sister, and I listen to audio books a lot because it allows us to multitask which actually makes it easier for us to take in the story. Thanks for pointing out the ableist mentality of this comment!
As someone who reads a lot people getting frustrated about people maybe “not remebering” books is so silly. 1.) you have no way of knowing if they remember it 2.) some books are forgettable and 3.) it’s okay to not read for a hypothetical book report 😂 I’m grown. Leave me be.
I enjoy e-books because they don't contribute to the physical clutter I have. :)
My kindle app changed my life. Being able to read anywhere is so amazing and I just can’t afford to keep buying books 😭 how are you guys out here filling your entire walls? Im jealous, they look so pretty! 🤍🤍
3:21 Literally my comment, just interacting bc I love validation 😂
Reading for views is okay I think, the real problem is starting a book with the intention of hating it. I think no matter what people say you should give an honest read to a book !
Some of these hot tales had me 😅 I agree that we shouldn’t care how much or what others read. Who really cares? If you care, then that’s a you problem. Great video!
I just got into audiobooks this year and I wouldn’t have bothered if I had to buy them. I get them all through libby from my library. I’m still figuring out what kind of audiobooks I enjoy though
I used to be very hard on myself, audiobooks don’t count, I would listen to the audiobook only while reading the physical book so “it counts”
Until I get my autism diagnosis and realised why I’m doing it
Now that I “count” audiobooks, know that there are books I can just listen to, which ones I need to read while listening to (complicated names or world building), and books I need to read the first few chapters then I can just listen, has made my reading journey way more enjoyable and fulfilling
People listening to audiobooks at 3x speed is wild to me, to me it all sounds like gibberish, but if you can understand that and retain that then go for it.
I also think audiobooks aren’t conducive to all multitasking, but what’s acceptable and what isn’t for the other task is going to vary for everyone.
Audiobooks are so good for the car too. That being I have a hard time with fantasy on audio when I’m driving bc I’ll get too focused on driving and then completely lose the story, but again, that’s just me.
I think my issue with dubious consent and abuse that romanticized is that the book doesn’t ever acknowledge that they’re bad. It’s one thing for them to be included, but I don’t think it should be portrayed as romantic or sexy.
I never ever reread books 😂 there’s just so much new books
3:20 I tell my second grader students all the time, we all read a different speeds. If they can get it, why can’t adults lol
23:54 - I kinda almost actually agree, here!😹🤭🤭😅😁 There are definitely times where I've read a book and wished I could NOT see inside a character's head because I thought it kinda ruined the moment knowing exactly what thoughts were or weren't in a particular character's mind when I maybe would've been able to appreciate it better simply keeping that much info a mystery and/or just projecting my own interpretation of the characters into the scene/story/whatever. 😂😂😂
As a slow reader who talks faster, people need to stop acting as if they're still in school and being graded. Ive seen people call audiobook or 3x speed "cheating". WHO THE FUCK IS QUIZING YOU??!
i thinka books being "too spicy" has more to do with what you are looking for in books and looking in the wrong places for those books. there are a lot of books that aren't spicy, you just gotta recalibrate your own algorithm to find them.
Agree with your take on booktok!
I will absolutely pick books up if a reviewer didn't like it but the things they hated sound like things I would actually enjoy-so, yeah, definitely know what you're saying there! 💜❤💜 😂🤭🤭😊😁😹💖
I did that recently on a TH-camrs worst of 2023. They mentioned they were underwhelmed but I wanted to see what they meant and while I agree with the sentiment in general I found it whelming but for different reasons so it encourages independent thought
I hate when people say BookTok ruins books or whatever because everyone has different taste I’ve liked some BookTok books and hated others you just need to know your taste
I don’t think Booktok is ruining the publishing industry, and I think it’s great that so many people, especially young people, have found a new love of reading as a result of booktok. BUT, I do think booktok, as a generalization, seems to push mainly straight white authors/books. All the books that go viral from tik tok are white authors and there just seems to be very little diversity in the books being widely read and pushed. I think that’s one reason why the Goodreads nominees were mainly straight white books and I think it’s affected the diversity in the New York time bestselling lists (and things like that) as well.
i think that’s a fair assessment. i’ve noticed it in my own reading this year! definitely something i’d like to change next year
I would say this is a problem everywhere not just tiktok.
@@happily_ever_april Totally.
If i read enough of a book to grasp it, i count it even if i dnf. If i dnf early on because i dont like the writing style or its not what i expect, i dont. If i read it like halfway but decide not to finish for some reason, like men who use SA of a woman to advance the plot for a man or something like that I'll dnf but count it anyway. I was reading a book recently and had 50 pages left and was like i dont even care what happens why am i pushing through but i count it.
I 100% agree that audiobooks count. BUT it's really jarring for my brain when people say, "I read this audiobook yesterday...." I'm sure the thought behind it is to put it on the same level as reading, but... you're NOT reading an audiobook.
25:59 - I think you're right that not everyone agrees about what spoilers are or aren't. But, that being said, it really isn't just big plot twists or endings that knowing absolutely can sometimes ruin or alter the experience/discovery/eniyment/fun of a book/story/whatever for some people. Different people are different, they read in all kindsa different ways for all kinds of different reasons. At least, if you're talking about a book directly to a specific person, you should definitely know or ask what type they are first before you do or don't tell them anything-that's just the nice thing to do, I think; it's okay for different people to have different spoiler boundaries. 🙂 Buut, even saying that, I do also think that people need to stop expecting and/or trying to force each other to have the same spoiler boundaries everywhere they go.😅👀 Like, especially just browsing around publicly on the internet. 😁😁
Im wondering who left these hot takes about reading a lot of books on something YOU posted. Feels like an attack knowing how much you read 😂
hahah
I definitely dont think people read a book and are like yes that makes this okay im gonna do it. But there are some things for younger readers i do think are harmful but its how its displayed rather than just existing. Like aria x ezra in pretty little liars. A show for preteens and teens and its very romanticized, its not at all portrayed in a harmful manner. And its easy to forget in the show hes significantly older than her, because the actors are much closer in age. And i definitely had kids in class who had crushes on younger teachers. I think having a crush is normal. People have inappropriate crushes all the time. But when its highly romanticized AND geared toward a vulnerable age range, i dk think it can be harmful.
i think i agree on the most part, the main thing i disagree with is that to me, imagery and well written prose is definitely a mark of a 'better' crafted book. at the end of the day, writing is an art and a skill, not just a vessel to communicate one's point. doesn't mean i can't enjoy NA romance or a Kindle romance, they have their space for sure, and i almost exclusively read romances, so i love that kind of writing as well, but there definitely is such a thing as better or worse writing, it just depends on you what's the cut off. other than that, i agree with p much everything. oh, not the paperback thing. i love paperbacks. hate hardbacks haha
11:58 don't blame the community because you can't find good recs once you start liking videos of people recommending the books you already like you will find good books for you (I tried it a few weeks ago and it worked 🎉)
28:07 - Some people are actually literal *_gods_* or something at multitasking, even whilst reading physical and/or digital books!!! They can walk and talk and do all kinds of different things all with a book[ or phone/tablet/etc] in hand and eyes on those pages, and not lose either 'plot' while they're at it. **I** - on the other hand - can't even multitask while listening to an audiobook; I can't be doing literally anything else except listening, or I will lose every 'plot' and need to back it up. Lmfao 😂😂😂😂😂
I mean, in a super technical and literal sense, listening to a story is not reading-but let's all just remember that written stories are just another way of telling stories, and many of the original stories(like fairytales, among so many other things) were originally shated orally. Whether audiobooks count as reading or not, what is the point of reading, ultimately? Nonfiction, it's to gain knowledge or stuff; Fiction, it's to experience and/or enjoy the characters/stories/themes/etcetera-right? And that can definitely be done just as well with your ears as with your eyeballs, ultimately, it all ends up in the same place = it all lands in your brain! 🙂😁🤭🤭😆💜 (and, yeah, there are people who by no fault of their own literally couldn't partake in books any other way; it should not be looked down on, at all) It's just different, not lesser! 💖💖 Who cares if you drive there, walk there, or take public transport or any other type of transportation there(private? horseback? horsedrawn carriage? cart pulled by oxen? idc)-as long as you get to the correct destination!!😊 Lol
I'm convinced whoever says 'i can only read the physical books" has NEVER tried reading on a Kindle.
I used to think this way, and I got a Kindle for Christmas in 2022 after having read a few KU books from my phone. And omg, the Kindle was such a game changer! I read more books on kindle last year than I did physical books!
The screen is so easy on the eyes when you’re in bed. It’s so great for vacations when you’re limited on space. It’s so easy to carry around with you everywhere. I love mine so much, and I tell everybody I know who reads how big of a difference having an ereader makes
How can you count a book you didn't finish reading as your reading count ?
I don’t agree with this one. I agree with you, that sometimes the book is just unforgettable. I just checked my GR and in 2017 (six years ago) I read 124 books and while I can’t remember everything about every book, I found some on there that I INSTANTLY remember my entire reading experience and my thoughts - even though I haven’t read some of them since then. 13:41
Personally I love cartoon covers because they’re cute I don’t care if they know it’s a romance but I do not want a naked man on the cover because I don’t like looking at that lol
I wish I had a library in my city😭😭
you can usually get access to a neighboring city's library :)
@@chandlerainsley I live in Port Elizabeth, SA. Idk how I would go about getting access to another library since they’re all controlled by different municipalities. And also, they’re SEVERELY underfunded lol. I think they stopped receiving new books from the government in like…2012 maybe?
@@chandlerainsley but thanks for the reply, I LOVE your videos and u were spot on when you said that we sometimes read a book that you review because we enjoy the tropes that you hate. There have definitely been a couple of books that you’ve hated but I realized I would like, based off of what u didn’t like.
Regarding the hate reading, I get where they are coming from, but reading lesser known books and authors usually doesn’t get any views. So I don’t think there’s a problem with reading a popular book you’re going to hate and doing a video on it which would likely generate more views to your channel for when you do discuss a lesser known book. 3:07
❤
I absolutely loved your video! Your insights and real-life anecdotes really made me think differently about some of my favorite books. Inspired by your channel, I've started documenting my own reading journey and real-life experiences on my channel. I'm sharing my unique takes on books and how they intersect with everyday life. Would love for fellow book enthusiasts to check it out and share their thoughts!
I really need people to understand that "spoiler" is not synonymous with "what the book is about."
If you dont want to know anything about a book before going into it, just say that! Stop calling a fucking book description a spoiler!
My hot takes are I am not interested in someone’s sexual life (being a virgin, being in an open relationship, masturbating) to be a character trait. It’s just not that interesting!!
people need to stop policing people's reading choices. it's book banning coded
It annoys me when people post on social media about their favorite books and make them an acronym. How am I supposed to know what book are they talking about? Takes too much brain power.
I love romance in other genres! sorry disagree. also re-reading is one of the best things ever on a cozy rainy day! are ppl not re-watching tv shows n movies?! it's the same! I DETEST cartoon covers soooo much. there are soo many amazing KU books. also like you said there are good books on wattpad as well just read what you desire it's not so serious people. wtf are all these takes on subjective things like wtf is "good reading" lol audiobooks not counting as reading is exactly as you said completely ableist. What is all this discourse on how to read n how many books to read?! uugghh!
#freepalestine 🇵🇸
Um, it is SO abelist to say audiobooks don't count. Whoever said that, you're gross :)
22:55 - I somehow simultaneously both agree with you and agree with that particular take. Being a faster reader definitely really doesn't necessarily mean you read better or are somehow more accomplished or love/enjoy reading more than a slower reader. But, also, there are absolutely countless reasons why people read and differing ways how people read and wtf even is a "bad" reader anyway?!😅🤔🫣👀😂 😁😁😊💖 Loll
