      Yep, i've seen this fellow remove an ancient horizontal coatrail that's been bolted directly to brick and plastered round in an old house and lots of plaster came off despite careful working. He showed how to clean it up, apply dilute PVA to stabilize the concrete, then more concentrated PVA as a prep before plastering, then showed how to apply the under and outer coat. What would make an inexperienced DIY'er quite nervous suddenly seemed possible and doable after watching that video.

    Wow cant believe someone could do such a bad job. Why only trim 1 side of the frame & not both sides. At first i thought only 1 side of the trim was mitered then i realised one side wasnt even trimmed. Shocking!!!!
    Nice repair job & good to see someone taking pride in their work.

    Subscribed to your channel a few months back. I find your videos the most informative and easy to follow, plus I have confidence that the methods you're discussing aren't cutting any corners at all which is great.
    Having searched through your videos I can't find one that discusses painting a composite external door. This is about as close as I can find (apologies for asking this question on perhaps an inappropriate video). I was wondering what your method would be and what products you would use to repaint the outside (external facing side) of a composite door front door.

      Thanks, if it's in direct sunlight a lot of the time your better going for a light colour. And use exterior paints there are some good water based exterior paints but I would go for a flexible oil exterior. Generally the more you pay the better the paint.. And if it's new wood use a good primer and 2 undercoat and even 2 top coat. The more paint at the beginning when first painted the longer the door will last. Re-paint after 2 years and it should last a good while after that.

      Painting and Decorating thank you so much for the detailed (and quick) reply. Am looking at Sandtex flexi primer undercoat and then flexi eggshell (which apparently dries more like a satin)

    When you cut away the dry expanding foam along the left hand side, why did you then not caulk it over with a high modulus silicone to cover up any open pores before putting on the UPVC trim back on? That would have made it even more air tight?

    Can you recommend someone to survey a conservatory upvc french door frame?
    The frame is pulled off the house wall top fixings by 10mm, but still a good tight on lower fixing.
    Consequently the opening door is now not sitting squarely.
    I dont know if the door frame will pull back in, with the weight of the conservatory roof on it ?
    It's on the house for sale in South Cheshire.
    Thank you.

    The original fit of that door & frame is awful. Only trimmed head & one jamb. Total laziness on the part of the fitter. It should have at least been trimmed top & both sides!

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's shocking.

    • @edwardcharles9764
      @edwardcharles9764 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      paul whitting the root cause of such problems is the foam and the fillers. Gone are the days when joiners made door frames and Windows that were an interference fit. Now it's rough measure the aperture, make a frame near enough, fit it where it touches and fill in the gaps. Consequently the poorly, trained, Cowboys and self taught think that's all you do. Screws too short? No problem, the foam will hold it in and the mastic will hide the gaps.
      It's only when you prepare and apply correctly as here, the foam and filler works correctly.
      Lose the foam and mastic and I bet most of these "tradesmen" would be gone!

    • @paulmcfadyen689
      @paulmcfadyen689 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edwardcharles9764 too true. If you need to use foam, then you've measured it wrong! That brickwork was awful as well

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@edwardcharles9764 Well really you never cut perfect because you need to be able to adjust and pack out from the brick. A wood frame touching the brick can rot faster. The problem in the video is the centralising of the frame in the first place it's too far to one side. Foam is great stuff allows the gap to be filled leaving a better job, but like you say you need to know what your doing.
