Cynical Aries you say that like everyone in this country basically for the last 50 years hasn't had an apathetic attitude about the corruption in government. OUr elected officials are ridiculous in the amount of money they spend on themselves alone. They have most of you so convinced that Donald Trump is the evil enemy that caused every problem we are facing when the truth is the exact opposite. Trump was only in office for 4 years and he came in and was against the status quo, he started firing people that were part of this corrupt machine that was basically every administration since Kennedy was assasinated, that is why he was so targeted by the media. The media was relentless and still is when it comes to Trump people have no idea all that he accomplished. (sorry for the rant in advance)
The truth is our nation was on its way to a great economic recovery with 0% inflation and gas at $2.50 a gallon, and Putin would have never attacked the Ukraine if Trump was President, our borders would be secure the list goes on and on and on. All Biden had to do was come into office and do nothing. We were the number one exporter of natural gas in the world and had not bought one barrel of oil from OPEC since sept of 2018 and all of that changed the day Biden took office. Biden reversed all of The last administrations policies out of spite remember he sat there and signed more executive orders than most presidents do in their entire term in one day on jan 20 2021 and that was the moment our economy started to fail, throw in 7 Trillion dollars in new spending to fight the fuckign climate crisis and our lives are forever changed for the worse. Your paycheck is worth 23% less than it was in january of 2020 and Biden did it all on purpose. The crimes Biden has committed are far worse than anything Trump was ever accused of. people need to get that straight. none of this recession had to happen, none of it. Biden has destroyed more jobs than he's created all of his claims and his press secretaries lies that she tells everyday to the American people about how the economy is recovering and how they try to blame Trump for everything that they are actually responsible for is a fuckign joke and they are only fooling those of you that still watch msnbc and think Biden is doing a great job. Those of us who are getting to the truth of matters are getting pissed off. Every american should be calling for this presidents resignation for the catastrophe he has caused at our border alone. Bidens policies have failed and have put every american citizen in danger.

I've paid all of my life into Social Security and I am well into middle-age. I figure that I'll have to work until I die. It's so uplifting, thinking that I paid into a 401K and lost money, due to crappy US policies. I'm not going to have anything to rely on in my senior years. Meanwhile, the politicians rule the stock market with insider information, and to this day, it still appears that it's okay for them to do it.

One big problem with social security sustainability is that when LBJ made SSI part of the general fund, politicians began using it like a slush fund writing I.O.U's in exchange for loans which most of them never repaid when they left office. In essence robbing the American taxpayer.

Social Security is not and never has been part of the "general fund". Society Security taxes can ONLY BE USED TO PAY BENEFITS. That's the law. Money from the Trust Fund can be invested in US Treasury Bonds, and that's where the confusion lies. Because that money then enters the general fund, BUT, just like when you or I invest in bonds, it must be paid back with interest. Except, of course, if the US government goes into default. That's where the risk is to Social Security.

American workers paid into Social Security as an income insurance for their retirement. The idea was good until Congress decided to “borrow “ from SSI, then Congress decided to give Aliens (illegal or legal) SSI when they were retirement age even though they had not paid into SSI. Then Congress decided to pay for “investigations” out of SSI funds. So now Congress is having to fund SSI even though it was originally intended to be self sustaining.
Cease giving away SSI to those who have not paid into it. Cease using SSI for funding anything other than what it was intended for, to pay income dividends to retires who have paid FICA.

Even if nothing was borrowed from Social Security, then inflation alone would have made it unsustainable. The total dollars in Social Security would have to grow at the annual rate of inflation just to be sustainable. For every dollar put in 60 years ago, people have to take about $18 out just to break even.

I think the huge question that all of us seniors have is, why is SS not going to be solvent, but no one EVER questions why welfare is NEVER under threat of going broke?
Part of the problem with SS is that it is paying huge sums to people it was never intended for. It was intended as a retirement plan. But of course, people couldn't pass up the chance for some "free" money.
Why were SS funds used to pay for other projects? Again, people can't stand to not spend whatever they can get their hands on.
I worked most of my life for my pittance. Congress people can work one term and recieve 10 times the amount.

The problem is the Ponzi scheme that Social Security always was, simply doesn't have enough new " investors" aka workers to support those getting benefits. Additionally, people for the last 25 or so years have been living longer than ever before. It was never a well thought out or planned system. For those under age 45, their contributions need to be placed in the stock market - over time, even with the ups and downs, the stock market outperforms the pathetic returns of the Soc. Security system at present. That might go a little way toward saving this disastrous system that is heading straight for the iceberg!

    • @jereuter01
      @jereuter01 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Social Security IS an entitlement by the original definition of the word as it applies to SS legislation. If one never pays anything at all into it (FICA tax) then that person cannot receive it. Medicare is the healthcare component of Social Security and one cannot receive it if one doesn't qualify for receiving Social Security. Medicaid has nothing to do with Social Security and Medicare! You are not alone in your distaste for using the word entitlement.
One characteristic of socialism and communism is Newspeak or changing the meaning for words.. Sex never included gender for example. Men could not become women by definition. Recently I listened to oral argument before SCOTUS where the government was arguing that shall was the same as will with some ridiculous advocacy around the word "must." It is the same with corporations being treated as persons. See Citizens v. United. Same with the word citizen.
Legal philosophies of original interpretation or traditional meaning of words is being destroyed by creeping newspeak and fake news media. The phenomenon is destroying USA from within. However, your comment has nothing to do with the problem diagnosed so well in this video. Unfortunately the senator is in the distinct minority. USA's leaders, whether politicians, economists, professors or intellectuals, all believe in MMT (Modern Monetary Theory). It has been taught since the late 60s.

Social Security and Medicare was intended for those who paid into the system, and meant to be self-supporting. The spending blew up when the politicians that were elected to represent the people they served, allowed these funds to be robbed for the benefit of the unscrupulous rather than the citizens who paid for their future security. These classes should be AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC because voters (including me, at times) only see the short term results. We don’t see the deeper consequences so we get frustrated with our politicians. That explains why each election we typically vote for the opposite party than what is in power. That’s all a load of hogwash and echo chambers.
This man has painted the clearest picture of our Socio economic problems to date in highly simplistic terms.
Clearly it’s yet again the fault of the boomers, granted, through, no fault of their own in this case, because they were simply born into the largest generational cohort, the world has ever seen.
This allowed for enormous voting, power, financial power, and soon to be massive financial drain, which the three subsequent generations combined, simply cannot compete with, or overcome.
As a Gen X, I fully never expected to see a Social Security check knowing that there would be nothing left after the boomers like locusts would unfortunately gut any financial surplus the government might have even in an optimistic future world. And lo and behold!
Sucks but it’s facts. Boomer generation has all the jobs, all the houses, all the money, only just lost its majority control in government (the house only), and continues to mold and shape laws and social structure according to the massive voting power needs of this generation which will be healthcare industry.
Our system relies on a one to one replacement capitalist theory in which a younger person pays the older persons Social Security, but with 3 to 1 ratio of young workers to a single boomer generational senior citizen…. The current system cannot work. It will fail.
Socio economic changes must occur or we will see our country fall like Rome into the natural devolution of capitalism which is feudalism. Albeit a corporate feudalism most likely.

People don't want to face reality and really fix the problem. They just want to run up the government credit card. Heck, SS recipients got like an 8% raise this year while I got a 3% raise after no raise for a year and only a 2% raise the year before that in my private sector job. Huge ridiculous medical costs, the insurance-hospital-doctors medical mafia, aspirins that cost $30 in E.R., stuff like that... The whole medical system needs to be overthrown, 100%! Then, you either have two options: free market, or a National Health Service, with controlled prices... pick your choice. The matter of fact is that medical bills and the prices for healthcare are out of control. It doesn't make sense that there is a different price when you go through insurance, than when you pay out of pocket. The system is filled with inconsistencies, rent-seeking, and there are too many people milking the cow, and so many interests, and lobbying that nobody wants to fix it.

As a mental math whiz, I've been trying to describe this problem to my parents for years.
At 18 year old, I figured out this problem pretty quickly just by looking at my first tax stub. Btw, I'm 29 now; married, home, children etc.
People wonder why I'm a minimalist in my personal habits; this is one of the primary reasons. Every DIME you can save now is a DOLLAR that won't be robbed from you in the future. Every cheap/healthy habit you can form NOW is going to be a lifestyle that affords you a good living in the economy that we are creating right now!
For every dollar YOU put into Social Security that is matched by employer, you will receive 50 cents before you die. For the average American, that is a mathematical fact!
Not only that, but we have a demographic crisis that is going to further bankrupt to ability to even pay for the current mandatory spending. Boomers and Gen X did NOT have enough children to pay for their retirement habits.
You want to know why we're having labor shortages? It's not due to laziness, nor even unemployment insurance. The savings, the stimulus money, and the insurance money has been exhausted. There's a labor shortage because we don't have enough people to take over for retirees. Covid jump started this inevitability.
Those 7 Millions men you keep hearing about in the news that are unemployed; they're not kids. They're 50-65 year old men that have retired early.
Once you understand the financial and demographic disaster we are facing, the faster everything else starts to make sense. This is all about the numbers folks.

if i put in a million dollars over course of my life in SSI then the government owes me a million dollars at the age of 65. they take our money without question, we get our money back without question. if not i want to stop the deductions out of my check and save it myself. we should not have to save 401k and SSI to live out the rest of our lives. sounds like the government needs reformed.

I think the federal government should be limited and more power returned to the States. I think the government has become too large and it seems to keep growing. I would wager that the government could take 75% of your earnings and they would spend all that and still want more, there is never enough. We already have State taxes and now the FED taxes are already out of control. If you are a working person, go look at your take home pay.
We are now 31 Trillion in debt and that is not counting the almost 9 Trillion on the FEDs balance sheet, which I doubt will ever be paid down and will probably only grow as they transfer the purchasing power of peoples savings to the government and well connected.
I would be all for any State that would like to Secede. Let's distribute the power of government. Plus people would have more choices. If you were a libertiatian you could live in the ultra conservative State. If you were super liberal you could live in the Marxist Orwellian State just to name 2 of them but you could have 48 more and have all different flavors. People are all different and there is nothing wrong with having more choices.
Just like you would not force unlike people to get married nor should we force people to live by one set of rules.
    Sincerely,
    John
