The Man V Horse Marathon

  • The Man versus Horse Marathon is an annual race over 22 miles (35 km), where runners compete against riders on horseback.
The race - which is a shorter distance than an official marathon road race - takes place in the Welsh town of Llanwrtyd Wells every June.
The event started in 1980 when local landlord Gordon Green overheard a discussion between two men in his pub, the Neuadd Arms. One man suggested that over a significant distance across the country, surely a man was equal to any horse? Green decided that the challenge should be tested in full public view, and organised the first event.
The first woman to run the race was Ann King in 1981. In 1982, the route of the course was amended slightly to give a more even match between the competitors. The course is slightly shorter than a traditional marathon at a reported 22 miles but over rougher terrain. In 1985, cyclists were allowed to compete too - and that year, U.S. ladies champion cyclist Jacquie Phelan narrowly lost to the first horse. In 1989, British cyclist Tim Gould beat the first horse by three minutes - the first time that a horse was beaten by a human in the race.
In 2004, the 25th race was won by Huw Lobb in 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 19 seconds. It was the first time that a man racing on foot had won the race, thereby winning the prize fund of £25,000 ($31,786.40) (which had been growing by £1,000 each year from the race's inception until claimed by a winning runner). The year's race also saw the highest-ever number of competitors; 500 runners and 40 horses.
The feat was repeated in 2007 when human competitors outpaced the first equine competitor by up to 11 minutes.
The 2009 race was marred by controversy when the organizers deducted time spent in the 'vet checks' from the horse times in addition to the 15 minutes for the delayed start of the horses. The deduction of this additional time enabled the horse to triumph by 8 minutes, instead of being defeated by 2. Whilst the organizers at the time claimed that the time spent in the vet check (which is not accurately monitored on a horse-by-horse basis) had always been deducted, this had not occurred in previous years.[6] The fastest runner, Martin Cox, refused to accept the winner's trophy in protest at the decision. Following protests from other competitors, the organizers reverted to the previously followed rules of only deducting 15 minutes for the 2010 edition of the race. However, despite Haggai Chepkwony running the fastest time since Huw Lobb's record-breaking effort in 2004, a horse triumphed by 10 minutes. 2011 featured a number of very good riders and horses competing, and the wet track conditions favoured horses over runners, but some very good times were recorded by the front runners. The winning rider was Beti Gordon riding Next in Line Grangeway, while the top runner was Charlie Pearson from London.
2012 saw the return of Huw Lobb, the runner who first beat the horse and landed £25,000 as a bonus. His winning time was, however, considerably down on his winning time from 2004. Coming 3rd in the Cork Marathon just five days earlier may have contributed to his running slower than perhaps he might have been able to. In 2013, extensive forestry works meant the organizers had to modify the route considerably, resulting in a course of nearly 24 miles, instead of the usual route of just under 21 miles. Despite a very hot day, the longer and hillier course favoured the horses, with 2011 winner Beti Gordon comfortably beating the first man Hugh Aggleton.

This is a relatively short marathon, to put in perspective, usual marathons are over 42 kms, or over 27 miles, and in any distance over this, humans will certainly win in any context, but anything below 38 km I bet on the horses

It depends on how fast the humans and horses are going for longer distances actually. If you are pacing your horse, and the humans aren’t pacing themselves, the horse will more than likely win

With that i don't agree. A horse can do 36 hours at an average of 8k. Or 288k. I've done 100k on foot in 24hours and was death on my feet.

Not a fair comparision animals don't have intent like humans if horses understood the need to run far and train for it they would be much better than they are. Also the genetic pool of the best endurance horses is very very small compared to how many people are willing to run a marathon around the world.

You are playing the what if game. What if humans had a heart and legs the size of the horse and did not feel pain then they would win. That is essentially the same logic your using. It just is absolutely crazy.

The human runners should have to carry the equivalent percentage of extra weight on them that horses are with their riders. If they weigh like 1000-1500lbs, it only means like 10-15lbs for a human. Gotta make it fair.

    • @totesMagotes83
      @totesMagotes83 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Also, horses are probably smart enough to run a marathon. The reason they need a rider is that 1) They'd have no reason to actually run the marathon, so it'd be hard for them to be motivated to follow through on it once you let them loose.
      2) Horses are expensive, so why would anyone just let them run a marathon on their own? What
      if you lose your horse?
      3) It might be difficult to get a permit for an event where you unleash a bunch of horses through an urban area. (I know Pamplona does running of the bulls, but most cities wouldn't allow anything nearly that dangerous).

@@totesMagotes83 you have only strengthened my argument. Humans have the ability to understand abstract concepts that horse just can’t. For instance if a human won the race they would receive like 1 or 2 thousand dollars. If a horse won they would increase their value and thus increase their chance of breeding which is all that matters to a wild animal like a horse.

Humans are the best animal in the world for running very long distances in hot weather. They will beat any other animal under those conditions - horses, dogs, wolves etc. The longer the distance and the hotter the weather, the bigger the margin. 22km gives horses and humans an equal change. Other conditions where humans do better than other mammals is in conditions of survival in extreme heat - dogs or horses will die when locked in a car or greenhouse in hot weather while humans are able to survive due to their ability to sweat. That is because we are African animals who used to hunt by running animals down at times of day (midday) when it was possible to avoid other large predators (which could not cope with the heat.

They have body hair which is a heat insulator while humans are naked. Humans have the highest density of sweat glands per square inch of any animal and so humans can cool themselves much more efficiently by sweating in hot weather. Human bodies are aligned vertically while other animals are quadrupeds whose bodies are aligned horizontally so humans catch a lot less heat from direct sunlight than quadrupeds. Hot weather endurance running in the African savanna in the noon-day sun was what humans evolved to do for the last 1 to 2 million years, and that is why they managed to survive despite being ridiculously slow, and having such poor low light vision (necessary for dawn/dusk hunting or predator avoidance in the African savanna) compared to every other animal. This advantage drops somewhat when you go outside Africa into cooler climates, which is why so many outstanding long distance runners come from African tribes who used this hunting techniques recently. Horses, dogs and maybe prong horn antelopes are the other outstanding endurance specialists, but cannot match humans for hot weather endurance running. That is why human babies and dogs regularly die when left in parked cars in hot weather - they have less developed sweat glands. For teen or adult humans, not so much of an issue.
