Great coach. His last Kiev team and their quick transitions made me fall in love with football. Massively underrated. Really wished they’d won the champions league in the late 90s.

Should\could have won it in 87 as well, easily the best team in Europe 86-87.

Correction: Great SOVIET or in terms of true history RUSSIAN coach (from russian region of Malorossia which was included into Ukranian socialist republic as a gift in 1922)

Great analysis. Really interesting, its a shame his legacy isn’t as well known across Europe.

Lobanovsky was a great man, as a person and pioneer. His diploma in Kiev Polytechnic university was devoted to physics, major in high temperature physics. He had created three great teams Dynamo Kiev 76, 86, 97. National SU teams based on DK players. I whish we could call those teams great by achievements, unfortunately they haven't won WC, EC, CC, although were able to do it.

As a Soviet kid in the 80s I’m still sore about the Belgium game at the 86 WC. Only FIFA would put linesmen from the US in a game with the Soviet team. That team deserved better. They played Platini’s France to a draw and demolished Hungary and Canada. 88 Euros was another heartbreak. That insane Van Basten goal I’ll never forget

Other than his Wikipedia page I found Jonathan Wilson's book 'Behind the Curtain' gave a real insight to his career and provided a real context to the football he was playing at the time.

Is he klopp's inspiration? I know sacchi played important role in his development but this man's ideas are somewhat similar to what Klopp is now doing at liverpool

      Proxy-inspiration..
He inspired Rangnick, which in turns, inspired Klopp..
