For a first outing this film is pretty incredible. It took Disney years and years for his animators to become good enough to make Snow White, and it cost so much money to make he had to put everything he owned up for collateral.
I had the US dub of this movie on VHS when I was a kid and I absolutely loved it. It took me years (and it took the internet getting better) before I started to learn just how significant this peculiar movie really was. It has a very special place in my heart, and the importance of it all is almost secondary to my memories of playing out scenes with my stuffed animals and cardboard lute.
I remember this on TV during school vacations in the 1960s. It was called PANDA AND THE MAGIC SERPENT. People think Panda and Mimi are a panda and a fox or a cat. Actually, Panda is a great panda and Mimi is also a panda, the lesser or red panda. The Firefox browser is named after the red panda--that's what a "firefox" is.
One Correction: while it was first feature length in color, in overal animation it wasn't the first as the title of first anime in color belongs to short film Mole's Adventure released few months before this movie.
I love this film, I'd say the core story is quite a bit stronger than you give it credit for, the slife of life parts in the middle are a staple of classic disney films, which is one of the reasons I usually don't like them as much as reinesssence or modern disney, but here I didn't mind it too much as it took more time too invest me in the atmosphere in the beginning, whereas disney usually had very very very quick set ups, then looooong slice of life parts and in the end a the 3rd arc is basically where only conflict takes place.
I agree the story is stronger then credit is given. I think I mean issue is that in western culture we are not familiar with these fairytales, which does them in justice for people who were born in Japan and China, Asian, in general, who have heard the story, and I have heard many versions of the story. I’m sure this seems a quaint retelling, and the Disney style fashion much like Snow White.

I vaguely remember seeing an Asian cartoon like this in the early 1970s of a boy going on an adventure, but was being spied upon by a bat minion of a wizard. Any idea of the name of this animation?
As a pre-school kid in the 80's I was in love with my tape of this movie. Sure, my only comparsion were the Disney films I knew and I liked this movie for being a little different. Why I liked the motifs of the romance between a boy and a mystic being I admitt, the heroine was rather bland and not depicted as powerful as she could have been. But I guess, this was mostly a problem of the 50's. It wasn't the greatest time for strong women characters in popular media. Especially when it was the "good girl" she wasn't really allowed to be threatening. My favorites of course were the animal characters- what do you expect of a toddler?! And damn did I looooove the music! My absolute fave was the spunky fish maiden. I always had wished, the heroine had been a little more like her.
No the first one was made in 1917 I think- and there were some in 1920. But I think that this is like the first colored and long anime that’s more like the animes nowadays.

Stevem my volume is normal but seems like your intentionally speaking as if you were in a library or not trying to disturb, the focus of the video should be equal parts the footage and your voice and dialogue since its why people are subscribed. It feels like your shy and that's the case it's ok but don't be afraid of letting people hear what you have to say
It might of just been the circumstance of the recording it was quite late in the night so I might of been tired. I was doing something different with the scripting process so this could be the growing pains, I'll speak up for tomorrows video. I can't say i'm shy i'm usually a loud talker ahaha.

The early Toei Animators were all so talented and some of them shaped the face of anime to come (Otsuka and Yasuji)

Yeah! I only have the old English dubbed version, but it’s heavily edited and the picture is old and deteriorated.

I watch it on tv 2007 and my brother found the CD in a box of old stuff we had when we lived in the Bronx and I was so happy

actually there's an earlier one in color, which is Katsura Hime (1937) by Noburo Ofuji
This anime movie was a childhood favorite! Very exotic story!
The man with the crystal is a monk so he wanted to dispel her, a magical transforming snake. It's a conflict in a lot of stories
