Super specs was the first episode I saw of are you afraid of the dark. I was in 2nd grade when I first watch it. In 5th grade there was a 3 year break and I did get back into it 8th grade.
That fact that Richard McMillian played two different photographers of evil cameras on two different children’s horror anthologies has got to be the epitome of typecasting.
From what I understand it wasn't an accident, yeah! Ron Oliver directed both of those episodes and from what I remember of an interview I heard from him, he cast Richard McMillan in the Goosebumps episode partly because he thought it would be a fun connection to the AYAOTD episode. Christian Tessier is in both episodes too!
The Tale of the Crimson Clown was definitely one of my childhood trauma moments, except I misheard it and thought they were saying "Clemson Clown." Whatever his name was, that clown was way scarier than Zeebo. All Zeebo did was make your life mildly inconvenient with phonecalls and footprints. The Crimson Clown friggin' traumatized you into learning a lesson.
Glad that I wasn't the only one that was traumatized by that episode! It gave me both the fear of clowns and getting in any kind of trouble. I tried re-watching Crimson Clown as an adult (I'm 32), and could barely handle it.
I remember feeling like I was such a rebel watching a Y7 show like this at age 6. ...then I saw that episode. LOL that's what I get 🤣 Fucking you too, Crimson Clown!
scarier than Zeebo? yeah I don't think so. Zeebo had it all. he had the look, the laugh, the perfect backstory and most importantly he did better than what Crimson ever did was not showing himself which makes it spookier. like the saying goes, what you can't see is more terrifying than what you can see and that episode in proved it thank you very much. also Zeebo the clown was like the mascot of the show cause everyone remembered him and he is referenced in many episodes including the movie that came out. where do you see Crimson the clown referenced again? exactly! never was. and Zeebo the clown was way more terrifying than Pennywise from the movie IT. he was a big part of my childhood and still is to this day where I still dream about him which makes me happy. you're entitled to your own opinion to like Crimson more but Zeebo the clown owns him as well as Pennywise and owns this show are you afraid of the dark. nuff said.
I remember being a little kid and seeing the premier of this show on Halloween. I had friends there for a sleepover. We sat down with our haul and had the blanket forts flying high. That intro is still burned into my memory, that was amazing...
If any of the characters on Are You Afraid of The Dark were to have recieved a spin off it should've be Sardo. Just him continuing to not know what he actually has and giving it to a random kid. The series finale would be him giving out the literal Pandora's Box. You know we all wanted that.

I think R.L Stines The Haunting Hour is a great bridge between both Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of The Dark. It has the campiness from Goosebumps but when it needs to it has the terrifying elements from AYAotD. It has some episodes that are just as terrifying or bleak as AYAotD
The Haunting Hour absolutely horrified me as a kid! Specifically the episode about the Hole and the Mascot one. Definitely agree on that front. Haunting Hour is what really introduced me to horror and it has a fond place in my heart for that.
Something that set the Haunting Hour apart was how mean spirited it could be with it’s endings. A LOT of the episodes had bleak endings with fates the kids didn’t deserve.
One that really stuck with me was that one episode where the kid was stuck sick at home and he got quarantined in his house with that Eldritch being while the government literally wanted to Nuke the house with him in it to make sure that being didn't get out. Like jeez what other kids shows going to do that? Shame you can't stream it anywhere right now unless you buy it.
Pinning this comment to address my use of the term "Latinx" in this video. I actually want to thank everyone who has left comments about this! Because of reading these comments, I will be changing the terms I use for Latin American people going forward. Open this comment to read more details. To explain why I used the term in the first place: up until recently, I'd been using "Latinx" because I'd seen it used by several prominent Latin American people in my friend circles and social media feeds, especially nonbinary people and their supporters. I want to call people what they want to be called, so it sounded to me like "Latinx" was the term I should use if I wanted to be gender-inclusive. By that same token, when I started hearing responses to this video from Latinos telling me "Don't call us this, we don't like it", my instinct was I wanted to understand the issue better. I honestly did not know much about the arguments against "Latinx", so I went to educate myself. Now having read up on the issue and talked to Spanish-speaking friends about it, I can see that most of the arguments against "Latinx" are quite reasonable. Issues with the term's pronunciation/declension and concerns about linguistic colonialism seemed the most convincing to me. Looking into the issue also led me to learning about the growing popularity of the term "Latine" as a new nonbinary/gender neutral term in the Spanish-speaking LGBTQ+ community. I'm happy to know this word now! I think it's great to have a term like that that's still pronounceable in standard Spanish. I hope it catches on! On top of that, I understand better now that "Latino" is still overwhelmingly accepted as a gender-neutral term in and of itself for groups of people. So, going forward I will be using "Latino" to refer to people in a general sense, "Latine" if I want to specifically talk about groups that include nonbinary people, and Latino/Latina/Latine for individual people. I will now only use "Latinx" if a person specifically asks to be called that. If there's anything else anyone wants to add about what terms they prefer, definitely feel free to let me know more! I want to do better, listen to people from different backgrounds, and be as inclusive as I possibly can. The only comments I will ignore are those who argue from a position of being less inclusive. I agree it was cool to see black and Latino actors in the show because back in the 60s and 70s they would not let those people into movies and TV shows like Are You Afraid of The Dark or the twilight zone. also, it was cool in Tale of the Mide Night Ride that a boy has moved to Sleepy Hollow in modern times and makes a girlfriend and gets her boyfriend jealous just like Ichabod Crane did with Katrina and Brom Bones Jelious but more importantly it was cool when the boy walks the girl home from the Halloween Dance and they discover that Washontone Irving Did Not Make Up The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow That The Story Was Base On A True Story and I loved how they discovered it that way in fact what happen in Tale Of The Mide Night Ride Was Just Like What happened In That Peter Pan Film That Robin Williams Was In because that movie was about a father not spending time with his kids and when the family goes to visit the grandmother in London and later his kids vanish then later he gets a visit from Tinker who looks just like Tinkerbell from the Peter Pan Fairy Tail who takes him to Neverland itself and he finds out that the story Peter Pan was no fairy tail that J.M Barrie did not make the story up that it was base on a true story and the father learn he is Peter Pan himself the movie was like what Tucker said in that episode THERE ARE SOME GHOST STORIES AND FOLK TAILS AND FAIR TAILS AND THAT HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR SO LONG THAT IT MAKES YOU WONDER THAT MAYBE JUST MAYBE THEY MAY NOT BE MAYED UP.

What is scarier than **blank**?...(goes on to explain why **blank** is scary in their story)" Midnight Society Members silently make eye-contact with their neighbors. Storyteller: "Submitted for the approval..."
I love "The Dangerous Soup" because it actually says that The protagonist was abused by his uncle, and he needs to overcome his trauma and fear. It's so cool to see such a mature theme in the show, and older actors really pulled it together
This show was one of my favorites as a child, and rewatching it a couple of years ago I remembered why. It's just so creative, even if there's some horror clichés they're used in unexpected ways or settings. And the premise in itself is golden, simple but effective. It's pretty telling that some of the goofier premises that you think it's impossible to take seriously, ended up having the scariest concepts.
Totally agree. Like for example: you'd think an episode about The Joker But He's Goofier-Looking would just be the pits, especially since other shows have tried "creepy camp superhero story" and not succeeded (see: the Goosebumps episode Attack of the Mutant). But Ghastly Grinner is an episode that fans almost universally agree is one of the best and scariest in the series.
I never watched this show growing up and I usually watch people review it and reminisce on their own nostalgia. Your video made me want to finally check it out for myself! :D
Loved this! So nostalgic. As someone who almost drowned multiple times as a kid that pool ghost really haunted me! Definitely the episode that stands out in my memory most
I have extremely vague memories of an episode that scared me as a child. I think it was Bigfoot Ridge? There was something about a missing girl in a setting with a lot of snow. Love the work, Erin! You're not late for Halloween this year - just early for next year.
Yup, that's exactly the one! Cool to hear from someone who watched the revival seasons growing up! I hadn't seen seasons 6 or 7 at all until my series binge this year, since I had aged out of the series by the time those seasons aired. I've wondered if there are kids out there who were impacted as much by those seasons as I was by the earlier ones. Glad to hear that you were one of them!
@@Eryncerise I didn't even know that was one of the revival seasons! I wouldn't say I "grew up on it" but it was definitely around. I saw it as a much scarier version of Goosebumps at the time. I think the attempt to establish a horror-esque atmosphere was the main contributor to that.
17:51 "I'm a sucker for stories about Magical Games" Incidentally, the first fanfic I ever finished, Persona: The Beautiful, was about exactly that I may have heard the name, but I never saw Are You Afraid Of The Dark at all as a kid, but was informed more on the series by sites like TH-cam and Cracked, and I did watch and enjoy a few episodes later on, like Tale of the Dream Girl and Dark Music
YES QUEEN! I love kids horror its just the perfect amount of spooky, I'm definitely gonna check some of these out, I've only seen a couple Are You Afraid of the Dark episodes.
Glad someone else loves The Tale of the Dream Girl. I actually have it as my #1 episode. And it also made me emotional when I finally watched it in my 40s. Super Specs reminds me of a scarier version of the movie They Live. Speaking of anthologies, do you remember The Hitchhiker or Jim Henson's The Storyteller? If not, I'd recommend those as well if you like anthologies.
The tale of the quiet librarian is a genuinely well made ghost story and stood in sharp relief to the other episodes me and my sister watched a few years ago

Crimson Clown is what probably gave me my coulrophobia, good to see it crack the Top 20. (The thumbnail made my heart skip a beat, and I actually looked away when that episode's ranking came up.) Good video, despite the heavy-handed virtue-signaling!
You know, ironically, I’ve heard a comment on the dream girl that stated it’s almost on the level of tales from the crypt, which honestly is something worth saying for an anthology horror series
freaky stories was great and most episodes are finally on youtube now as well, they used to cut out the cockroach and maggot scenes when people posted them
My sister and I watched are you afraid of the dark every time it was on. The scariest episode for me personally was the hospital one with the vampire. My sister used to make fun of me for being scared of it.

I literally laugh like The Crimson Clown when I encounter either a monster, group of monsters, or an incompetent player (who is trying to steal from my base of operations) on Minecraft when me and my local friends play. The question that still gnaws on the back of my mind is... what if that darn clown got that pancake faced fool of a took?
The tale of the prom queen is my favorite just because of the costume design, and it’s just kind of romantic and the ending- literally feels like something I would write, but less gay.
I watched this show as a kid, even though I hated horror (and still do). I honestly couldn't tell you why; I guess like all good horror despite my fear I was too intrigued to look away. And you were right, I do disagree with where you put some of my best remembered episodes ;) However I only remember seeing 3 of these seasons as a kid, so I can't really argue unless I also want to take the time to watch them all again.
Hey, you forgot to review one episode the tale of the Stone owl it’s about a stone owl statue that comes to life, but you can’t reason with it and it kills to feed, even though it can’t eat. And it’s only weakness is having light shined into its eyes and I’m kidding that’s not an episode it’s an idea I came up with. the idea of some owl like monster or a statue of an owl coming to life and haunting people sounded really interesting to me I came up with it after watching Colin looks back’s review on top 31 episodes of are you afraid of the dark? it’s a dumb idea I know, but I kind of like it would make sense as for years owl have been demonized with people believing that they’re evil or a sign of bad omen. That’s medieval beliefs, though they’re mostly viewed as wise and skilled hunters.
I really like this video and I wanna say it's very, very, very clear you put a ton of hard work into this! I will say though, for me personally who hasn't seen a ton of Are You Afraid Of The Dark and didn't really grow up with the show (I'm 17. I was born in 2003) I can get a bit lost with what exactly happened in each episode. Like I said, I genuinely really like this video and I understand completely that this took a ton of time and dedication, but maybe if you do a video like this again, you could add a quick summary of what each episode is about as you rank them? Once again, I 100% appreciate all of the hard work and I love your video! I just thought it'd be a good idea to give a little bit of prospective from someone like me? I'm just wanting to help you improve if I can! Absolutely no hate or harm is intended! I just wanna help you grow as a creator if I can as a fan! ☺️
I must respectfully disagree with 'The Twisted Claw' being ranked so low on the list. This was probably the only AYAOTD episode that ever actually scared me, mainly due to the last few minutes after the kid accidentally makes the wish that brings his grandpa back from the dead. All you see is his car pull up on that foggy street, and then a POV shot of something getting closer and closer to the front door... and then the doorbell rings. They never show what it is, and ironically it's what you *don't* see that makes it so terrifying. I can handle scary masks and makeup and things that go "booga booga" without batting an eye, but imagining what was on the other side of that door chilled me like nothing else did the entire show. There's another good moment, when the one boy wishes that the other would just "lose your folks," and a moment later the phone rings. Before he even picks it up you *know* what the news is going to be, and that idea, knowing that I may someday get a call in the middle of the night and immediately know it's terrible news, wanting nothing more than to ignore it but knowing I have no choice but to pick up... that idea has always been scary to me. I also liked the Halloween atmosphere of the rest of the episode (those older kids who ambush the two main boys during trick-or-treating were pretty creepy, too, imo), but even thought we don't see eye-to-eye on this episode I still really enjoyed this video :)
That's fair! I fully acknowledge that this entire list is highly subjective, hence why I tried to frame it as just what I consider my favourites, not what's objectively "good" or "bad" (for the most part anyway, I think most people can agree that Virtual Pets is... uhhhh subpar, let's say). Totally a personal taste and experience thing. For me, Twisted Claw didn't personally resonate just because I don't remember watching it as a kid as much, and so the more awkward aspects of the writing, acting, and production stood out to me more rewatching it with adult eyes. Since those aspects of production affect most of the episode outside of the climax, that made a lot of it kind of a slog for me to watch. That's what brought it down lower in the ranking for me personally. However, I think you're totally right about the strongest parts being everything from "I wish you'd just lose your folks" to when that doorbell rings! When I say in my mini-review that Twisted Claw shows the promise of what would come for AYAOTD in the future, that's 100% the part I was referring to. You're also right that the older trick-or-treaters in the half-masks were delightfully creepy, so points for that too. And to be completely fair, there are other episodes that have just as much awkwardness as Twisted Claw for a long part of their runtime, but I couldn't bring myself to rank them lower because they had a really scary scene or two that worked super duper well on me as a kid. Thirteenth Floor is one of those for sure. So yeah, point being I think your opinion on Twisted Claw is totally valid! I respect all your points about it and I'm glad to hear it made such a strong impact on you growing up. The things it does well, it does do really well!
I had a video tape compilation of different nick shows as a kid-- Tale of the Lonely Ghost was the episode of this show on the tape and it used to make me so freaked out. I'm happy it ended up in your upper half :D

I am totally blind, and I love are you afraid of the dark, so I was wondering do they have are you afraid of the dark with audio description? It’s scary anyway, but with audio description I can get more out of it and it would really be scary.
I don’t know for sure, but I would doubt it unfortunately. For a show this old and not really paid much attention to anymore, I don’t think they would have. Or if they did, I don’t know if it’s accessible anymore (I can’t find it if so). The most likely version to have audio description is probably the 2018 miniseries, but I’m not sure if it does.

Oh man....the Carved Stone baddie is in my top 3 scariest AYAOTD monsters/villains. He's probably 3rd followed by Nosferatu in The Midnight Madness and #1 The Tale of the Quicksilver...that Demon that drags Ashley from The Fresh Prince into the walls....scary sh!t!!! I dug the Phone Police though too...and the Dead old lady neighbor and the toy factory on the top floor... anything with Dr Vink, with a Va, Va, Va or Mr Sardo no Mr, emphasis on the DO!!!

I want to do better, listen to people from different backgrounds, and be as inclusive as I possibly can. The only comments I will ignore are those who argue from a position of being less inclusive. Like, if you argue based on the idea that you don't like nonbinary people, then no, I can't agree with you there.

I agree it was cool to see black and Latino actors in the show because back in the 60s and 70s they would not let those people into movies and TV shows like Are You Afraid of The Dark or the twilight zone.
also, it was cool in Tale of the Mide Night Ride that a boy has moved to Sleepy Hollow in modern times and makes a girlfriend and gets her boyfriend jealous just like Ichabod Crane did with Katrina and Brom Bones Jelious but more importantly it was cool when the boy walks the girl home from the Halloween Dance and they discover that Washontone Irving Did Not Make Up The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow That The Story Was Base On A True Story and I loved how they discovered it that way in fact what happen in Tale Of The Mide Night Ride Was Just Like What happened In That Peter Pan Film That Robin Williams Was In because that movie was about a father not spending time with his kids and when the family goes to visit the grandmother in London and later his kids vanish then later he gets a visit from Tinker who looks just like Tinkerbell from the Peter Pan Fairy Tail who takes him to Neverland itself and he finds out that the story Peter Pan was no fairy tail that J.M Barrie did not make the story up that it was base on a true story and the father learn he is Peter Pan himself the movie was like what Tucker said in that episode THERE ARE SOME GHOST STORIES AND FOLK TAILS AND FAIR TAILS AND THAT HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR SO LONG THAT IT MAKES YOU WONDER THAT MAYBE JUST MAYBE THEY MAY NOT BE MAYED UP.

I love "The Dangerous Soup" because it actually says that The protagonist was abused by his uncle, and he needs to overcome his trauma and fear. It's so cool to see such a mature theme in the show, and older actors really pulled it together
This show was one of my favorites as a child, and rewatching it a couple of years ago I remembered why. It's just so creative, even if there's some horror clichés they're used in unexpected ways or settings. And the premise in itself is golden, simple but effective. It's pretty telling that some of the goofier premises that you think it's impossible to take seriously, ended up having the scariest concepts.
Totally agree. Like for example: you'd think an episode about The Joker But He's Goofier-Looking would just be the pits, especially since other shows have tried "creepy camp superhero story" and not succeeded (see: the Goosebumps episode Attack of the Mutant). But Ghastly Grinner is an episode that fans almost universally agree is one of the best and scariest in the series.

I have extremely vague memories of an episode that scared me as a child. I think it was Bigfoot Ridge? There was something about a missing girl in a setting with a lot of snow.

Yup, that's exactly the one! Cool to hear from someone who watched the revival seasons growing up! I hadn't seen seasons 6 or 7 at all until my series binge this year, since I had aged out of the series by the time those seasons aired. I've wondered if there are kids out there who were impacted as much by those seasons as I was by the earlier ones. Glad to hear that you were one of them!
@@Eryncerise I didn't even know that was one of the revival seasons! I wouldn't say I "grew up on it" but it was definitely around. I saw it as a much scarier version of Goosebumps at the time. I think the attempt to establish a horror-esque atmosphere was the main contributor to that.

Glad someone else loves The Tale of the Dream Girl. I actually have it as my #1 episode. And it also made me emotional when I finally watched it in my 40s. Super Specs reminds me of a scarier version of the movie They Live. Speaking of anthologies, do you remember The Hitchhiker or Jim Henson's The Storyteller? If not, I'd recommend those as well if you like anthologies.
The one that scared me the most was The Tale of Ghastly Grinner. I always looked forward to this every Saturday night and I remember so many of them.

Crimson Clown is what probably gave me my coulrophobia, good to see it crack the Top 20. (The thumbnail made my heart skip a beat, and I actually looked away when that episode's ranking came up.) Good video, despite the heavy-handed virtue-signaling!

I watched this show as a kid, even though I hated horror (and still do). I honestly couldn't tell you why; I guess like all good horror despite my fear I was too intrigued to look away.
And you were right, I do disagree with where you put some of my best remembered episodes ;) However I only remember seeing 3 of these seasons as a kid, so I can't really argue unless I also want to take the time to watch them all again.
Hey, you forgot to review one episode the tale of the Stone owl it’s about a stone owl statue that comes to life, but you can’t reason with it and it kills to feed, even though it can’t eat. And it’s only weakness is having light shined into its eyes and I’m kidding that’s not an episode it’s an idea I came up with. the idea of some owl like monster or a statue of an owl coming to life and haunting people sounded really interesting to me I came up with it after watching Colin looks back’s review on top 31 episodes of are you afraid of the dark? it’s a dumb idea I know, but I kind of like it would make sense as for years owl have been demonized with people believing that they’re evil or a sign of bad omen. That’s medieval beliefs, though they’re mostly viewed as wise and skilled hunters.
Dead mans float was my favorite but I'm glad you didnt rank it higher because it would have been too predictable.

I really like this video and I wanna say it's very, very, very clear you put a ton of hard work into this! I will say though, for me personally who hasn't seen a ton of Are You Afraid Of The Dark and didn't really grow up with the show (I'm 17. I was born in 2003) I can get a bit lost with what exactly happened in each episode. Like I said, I genuinely really like this video and I understand completely that this took a ton of time and dedication, but maybe if you do a video like this again, you could add a quick summary of what each episode is about as you rank them? Once again, I 100% appreciate all of the hard work and I love your video! I just thought it'd be a good idea to give a little bit of prospective from someone like me? I'm just wanting to help you improve if I can! Absolutely no hate or harm is intended! I just wanna help you grow as a creator if I can as a fan! ☺️
I must respectfully disagree with 'The Twisted Claw' being ranked so low on the list. This was probably the only AYAOTD episode that ever actually scared me, mainly due to the last few minutes after the kid accidentally makes the wish that brings his grandpa back from the dead. All you see is his car pull up on that foggy street, and then a POV shot of something getting closer and closer to the front door... and then the doorbell rings. They never show what it is, and ironically it's what you *don't* see that makes it so terrifying. I can handle scary masks and makeup and things that go "booga booga" without batting an eye, but imagining what was on the other side of that door chilled me like nothing else did the entire show.
There's another good moment, when the one boy wishes that the other would just "lose your folks," and a moment later the phone rings. Before he even picks it up you *know* what the news is going to be, and that idea, knowing that I may someday get a call in the middle of the night and immediately know it's terrible news, wanting nothing more than to ignore it but knowing I have no choice but to pick up... that idea has always been scary to me. I also liked the Halloween atmosphere of the rest of the episode (those older kids who ambush the two main boys during trick-or-treating were pretty creepy, too, imo), but even thought we don't see eye-to-eye on this episode I still really enjoyed this video :)
That's fair! I fully acknowledge that this entire list is highly subjective, hence why I tried to frame it as just what I consider my favourites, not what's objectively "good" or "bad" (for the most part anyway, I think most people can agree that Virtual Pets is... uhhhh subpar, let's say). Totally a personal taste and experience thing. For me, Twisted Claw didn't personally resonate just because I don't remember watching it as a kid as much, and so the more awkward aspects of the writing, acting, and production stood out to me more rewatching it with adult eyes. Since those aspects of production affect most of the episode outside of the climax, that made a lot of it kind of a slog for me to watch. That's what brought it down lower in the ranking for me personally.
However, I think you're totally right about the strongest parts being everything from "I wish you'd just lose your folks" to when that doorbell rings! When I say in my mini-review that Twisted Claw shows the promise of what would come for AYAOTD in the future, that's 100% the part I was referring to. You're also right that the older trick-or-treaters in the half-masks were delightfully creepy, so points for that too.
And to be completely fair, there are other episodes that have just as much awkwardness as Twisted Claw for a long part of their runtime, but I couldn't bring myself to rank them lower because they had a really scary scene or two that worked super duper well on me as a kid. Thirteenth Floor is one of those for sure.
So yeah, point being I think your opinion on Twisted Claw is totally valid! I respect all your points about it and I'm glad to hear it made such a strong impact on you growing up. The things it does well, it does do really well!
I had a video tape compilation of different nick shows as a kid-- Tale of the Lonely Ghost was the episode of this show on the tape and it used to make me so freaked out. I'm happy it ended up in your upper half :D

I am totally blind, and I love are you afraid of the dark, so I was wondering do they have are you afraid of the dark with audio description? It’s scary anyway, but with audio description I can get more out of it and it would really be scary.
I don’t know for sure, but I would doubt it unfortunately. For a show this old and not really paid much attention to anymore, I don’t think they would have. Or if they did, I don’t know if it’s accessible anymore (I can’t find it if so). The most likely version to have audio description is probably the 2018 miniseries, but I’m not sure if it does.

Oh man....the Carved Stone baddie is in my top 3 scariest AYAOTD monsters/villains. He's probably 3rd followed by Nosferatu in The Midnight Madness and #1 The Tale of the Quicksilver...that Demon that drags Ashley from The Fresh Prince into the walls....scary sh!t!!! I dug the Phone Police though too...and the Dead old lady neighbor and the toy factory on the top floor... anything with Dr Vink, with a Va, Va, Va or Mr Sardo no Mr, emphasis on the DO!!!
