Well in one of those episodes Toguro mentioned that he and genkai in her prime were almost equal in terms of power, but genkai has aged a lot and she isn’t immortal like toguro so she had to eventually find an apprentice to pass on the pooled bulk of her spirit energy which powers her infamous spirit wave and yusuke was the perfect apprentice since they have similarities when channeling their spirit energy.
I still cannot get over how this goes out the window in the next arc. The Spirit Wave and Spirit Wave Orb become the ultimate hax based on its explaination. The way the the Spirit Wave is described is effectively taking the power the Spirit Gun and channeling it (in an offensive way) to boost the power of one's punches. This could theoretically let someone like Genkai punch above her weight in terms power class. So Imagine Yusuke who becomes lower to mid S-Class by the end of the series using the might of the spirit wave. But that's why there was supposed attempt ONCE by Yusuke to use the attack on Sensui and then it failed. Because the attack is a one shot.
Genkai is a much better teacher and mother figure to Yusuke than Jiraiya is to Naruto. Genkai is the reason why Yusuke grew as a fighter and mature as a person. She really trained him very well. Transforming from a normal human to a fighter on the level of an Upper B class demon. Jiraiya barely taught anything to naruto after the timeskip. Kakashi, Fukusaku and Bee trained him much better.
I think Jiraiya’s main reason on taking Naruto with him is to keep both Naruto and the Hidden Leaf Village safe from the Akatsuki, training him on controlling his chakra was just secondary and his main goal is for Naruto to learn the rasengan which was an incomplete jutsu left by the fourth Hokage.

Fukusaku turned him from chuunin/jounin level to on par with an Akatsuki. Now combine all that time including with Bee and it didn't took him a year.
