    Richard, I'm older than you I guess you and I have been through the best of times and now the worst of times as most people go. When I was a kid people would let you hunt on their land, people abuse that now, is the reason it stopped, great that Jennifer and hubby are building out there!

    • @OutpostReview
      @OutpostReview  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s the truth. Many have told me when I asked for permission to hunt on their property that they used to, but had to stop because people kept leaving their cattle gates open and things of that nature which caused no hunting for anyone.

    Sounds like a plan to me Richard. That will be nice to have Jennifer and her family near you to kind of watch over you and you to watch over them. Looking forward to seeing the progress to come.

    Another great video Richard! I wanted to just add some comments about using Pine for firewood. We live near Lake Tahoe, CA, in the mountains. I have been burning Ponderosa, Jeffery and Lodgepole Pine for 50 years. We have never had a chimney clog up with creosote and have never had a fire or even a close call. The secret is letting the wood fully season and keep it dry. Green and wet Pine will cause creosote in the pipes, but dry wood does not. I also burn it really hot for the first 20-30 minutes and then shut it down. It is the most abundant wood here, very easy to process and a full stove in the evening will last all night. No body here wants to burn it either, but I have never had a problem with it. Anyway, just my experience with it.

      @OutpostReview  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment. Glad you said hello. Now we have two schools of thought. Pine with heavy sap content like we have here that we call “fat wood “ stays consistent in the wood whether green or dry. Once it’s burned it gives off a black thick smoke that will taint the meat over a fire and build up in the chimney over time and if set on fire will burn like a torch. I assume different species contain similar characteristics but some maybe less than others. Growing up here I was taught not to use for those reasons. Burn hardwood for heat and cooking and all others for campfires. So what you have in your area may work well.

    Richard or Jennifer, are you, you being yourself, Jennifer and her husband, and Patrick building Jennifer's new house, or having a contractor do it? Just curious as I love watching you work. Also, is Jennifer going to start her own channel and document her homestead life? :) Thanks for the great videos. Always enjoy them.

      Jennifer here. I am thinking about documenting the journey. That is still up for grabs.. We will have a contractor do some as we are building a “stick built” barndo, and of course we will have to let daddy work some of his magic as well. ♥️♥️

    Richard save the black walnut limbs, because it makes very good smoking wood for meat.
    I learned from a German sausage maker how to blend wood for smoking .
    Black walnut smoke give meat a black pepper flavor.
    I would smoke briskets, ribs and other meats and I never used salt or pepper or any other seasoning, as all my seasoning was done with the wood smoke
    For my base note I would use hickory or pecan, and for the middle note a fruit wood like apple, cheery, peach, plumb or pear, for the high note black walnut or mesquite.
    Sometimes I would use Beech, Birch, Maple or oak.
    People would ask me what rub I used on the meat and they did not believe me when I said none.
    One black friend once asked where I was buying by BBQ, I told him I cooked it, and he replied there was no way in high heaven a white boy could cook bbq that good. Then he laughed.
    I showed him the secret of blending woods to develop the flavor profile, and he was shocked that all the good flavor came out of the wood smoke without seasonings.
    Manford was a German sausage maker who the packing house I was working had been hired to develop new products, and he complained about the store smoker burning down a whole forest to smoke meat. Belching smoke for hours.
    He taught the art of blending the wood and how to smoke the meat German style.
    When the meat is at room temp you only need your meat in heavy smoke for 45 min to 1.5 hours, after that the pour plug up and take no more smoke. Then you finish off the cooking with cheap woods after the meat is wrapped up in heavy paper or foil to finish cooking.
    Try what I said and enjoy a great bbq.

      You’re right Raymond. It seems like any wood from a fruit or a nut type of tree is the best wood to use on a fire. We’re also looking forward to the bigger portion of that tree and saving some of that lumber for some special projects.
