Hey Jasper, must admit this was a long time ago. From memory the foam for our bed had to be different sizes as if they were the same the bottom one when made into a sofa would over hang. But depending on how you’ve built yours this could be the perfect solution. 👍👍

Definitely recommend building your own bed to anyone that is looking to fit out a T5/6 van if you don't need to have seats for passengers in the back. As it gives so much more flexibility than the rock and roll type bed. We did ours like a huge day bed in the back with storage under

You guys crack me up. I built my bed out of ply and has stood up well but your design looks much better. I went for the front-facing bench to bed design with my main reason being I have barn doors and they’re rarely kept open (especially when it’s raining) with the boot being used for access to under bed storage. We’re splashing for a rnr bed later this month to allow my son and or wife to sit in the back as the bench seat isn’t big enough for child seat and adult bum for long journeys. So expensive though! Think it’ll match my materials investment I made in my van originally!
So many options, designs and layouts to choose from! The cost did put us off a rock and roll bed, maybe if we weren’t so tight we would have gone down that route! 🤣🤣🚐👍 ... best get that kitchen ready for August for cooking up tasty camper meals! 🍳🍳

Fantastic video! I am currently in the process of van renovations on my t5. Previously had a pull out bed down the sliding door side but missed the best of the view! Now we are going for something more akin to the rock and roll bed layout. Currently planning to add a composting loo too - no mean feat in a SWB t5! Is Flora LWB? We were aiming for your layout but doesn't seem to be enough room! The beauty of self built is that we can all cater to our own likes and dislikes!

Hi! Yeah, definitely not for everyone. We don't find it too tight/claustrophobic but it's not quite as comfy if we sleep with our heads facing the back end of the van as we can't use the extra space provided by the swivel seat and if I turn over in the night I tend to hit my arm on the "bedside table". Fortunately it works for us, but we know it's not ideal for everyone. Cheers =)
I think I may rue not using planks instead of proper slats. My build is a hybrid of yours and Hughtubes design. Defo counter sink the screws! I think your original video was superb and if nothing else gave me the encouragement to have a go myself, you are very humble people!!! Also a question with regards to your under bed lighting. I have also fitted a USB powered LED strip on the underside but I think I've blown it. What cable amp rating did you use to connect the USB socket to the fusebox and what size fuse did you use?
We don't really have any real-world experience to compare the slats to planks, we've only ever know slats in the camper! You'll have to let us know how it goes, it may not be that different? Main thing is that you'll have good air flow :) If I recall (will have to check later) I definitely over-specked the cabling. I reckon I may have used 10amp cable with maybe a 5amp fuse. Though I may be wrong. I think when both phones are charging via USB and have low batteries then can pull over an amp each. So a 3amp fuse would be cutting it fine so I went with 5. I could be wrong, will try and clamber under the bed and check! Your build is coming along well :)
@@FloraTheNoviceExplorers Your a legend thanks. I used 5amp cable with a 3amp fuse and it didn't work, swopped the fuse for a 5amp fuse and it came on! Turned it off with the controller, went to turn it back on and it was dead but the USB socket still works fine with any other device. Back to the drawing board I think. Thanks for the info though, much appreciated.
Hmmm... sounds weird. I don't know how much power the LED lights need but I can't imagine it'd be much at all! Do the lights work in the house or they definitely kaput?
That's a bummer! Are they the same ones we bought or just similar? I'm no expert but thought they'd have been okay with the smaller fuse? Maybe a dodgy batch of lights?? Due to some not-so-clever design work by myself, I can't easily get to my fuse box without taking half the bed out of the van :P also would mean I'll have to chuck Meg out temporarily too! Nice bed design, although 124cm would just be enough for me alone, as I need lots of space to sleep comfy
