Humble Road Hello I am a solo female baby boomer 2015 road track etrek 22 foot owner.. I am living and traveling in it full-time and just not enough storage.. I am considering the pleasure way Plateau XLMB I hate the idea of giving up having a van versus Rv but I love that Murphy bed and I really need the space. What do you think? I is only 22ft but width seems to be sufficient to allow more space for much need storage. Also hate the i idea of giving up having a real van versus a Rv on a sprinter chassis.
Do you think I should look at the other Pleasure Ways that are just longer that have more storage? What do you suggest? I have a mountain bike I need to deal w/as well. . Also are you selling this because I’d be interested in buying it.

40 years ago I used the ticking stick method for installing complex shaped kitchen counter tops. Now there are a number of 2D/3D digital-laser devices that aid in making these templates, but none of them are as inexpensive as a stick, pencil, and piece of scrap plywood.

Once upon a time, before computers, when us old time graphic designers/AD’s needed to use ruling pens, rapidograph pens, Korinoor made a flexible curve. Just like your snake... still got mine somewhere with my old drafting materials. Love the tick stick! Thanks for sharing.
Ahh! I do miss those days. I will never forget the first demonstration of a MAC computer. The cut and paste made me realize our industry would never be the same, but in a good way. The price was the death of a true art form; typesetters. That's why I was so excited to learn of this ticking stick! It reminded me of the old days.
LOVE how your photography expertise and experience are showcased near the end of the video with the shots of the metal joints. Who knew 80/20 aluminum could look so good?

I need to show my son this for the ticking stick! Who knows, maybe he'll think his mom needs a van camper (vamper--my grandkids definition.. little too close to vampire tho). Early in my career I worked in the sign industry and use to do a lot of drafting and pattern making, I had the “snake” with the soft lead core but I preferred the one they made with interlocking Lexan strips (probably eBay).. much better for longer gentle curves like you are doing. (Loved your jewelry trick with the bendie one by the way!).. Most of the time on a pattern like yours I would look ahead 12” or so and just draw to the dot at that point.. kind of amazing how accurate and smooth you could get after you get the hang of it. Butcher paper was the other go to, ruff cut the paper oversized, tape the straight edge of the paper to the straight of the shelf..then push the paper into the seems. Put tick marks on the paper and play connect the dots refining the curve on the table.. just another idea to add to your arsenal...

GEORGE...The ‘Ticking stick” looks typical engineering complicated to me. Why not just use your “snake”...put 2 together and set the bend you need...simple!!...ya?
Making your own L Brackets will ultimately be a saving of time and ,money, for sure... I am starting to see the SYSTEMS you are putting into place...

If you hold the angle aluminum like a Christmas tree pointing up it won't damage as much

I was a carpenter many years ago, and I never heard of that technic before. My cousin is just finishing up on his 52' sailboat that he has been building from scratch for the past 28 years. I'll have to see if I can learn him on this!! ;-)

Where the heck was this video last week when I was making my upper cabin shelf? A ticking stick would’ve been so much easier. :)
If you cut angle with the pointed side up like a triangle sitting on its base it’s less likely to kick out like that. Like this ^. It’s also easier on the blade since the metal is always being cut at an angle.
I thought of that, but I had two issues. First, it wasn't as friendly to being clamped down and secondly, essentially you have two kerfs instead of one, I thought that could be problematic, given the violence of the first kick out. So far, all is working out pretty well and I should have hundreds of pieces ready by the time I get my 80/20 material...
Your “snake” is a French curve, a.k.a. Flexible curve ruler.
French curves are generally fixed bits of plastic. The snake is generally a "spline" or "flexible curve". This according to Wikipedia and my distant knowledge from "technical drawing" class in school.

Your using a tick stick really yup a cool thing. I use it in fixing old furniture lift should look like the right so the best part is , I would likely as not be covering it with fabric hahaha Fun to see you work. Hubby used the snake repairing gun stocks to get the perfect size and shape. Having ingenuity what a gift. thanks for video and sharing. Watching for the next installment .... Bye
Love it! Would a large profile contour gauge (with metal or plastic pins) be helpful as you tackle these shapes to make your cardboard templates?

The only thing - for max accuracy the long edge of the angle and the “tick” need to be on the same edge of the stick. IOW flip your tick stick over and mark the other side

That's where I saw mine for the first time, in an Art Director's office. That was my life, working with Art Directors and Creative Directors. Sometimes I miss it. Only sometimes...

It did not fit as tight as I would have liked, but I sensed that throughout the exercise. I will redo it and reshoot, explaining what I do differently to improve on it. Don't worry, I kept the original, as embarrassing as it is! :-)

No French Curve? I use Bee's wax for cutting tools in aluminum, oil for steel.

Since you are my staunchest critic, I'm gong to hold your feet to the fire on this one, James. I just spent one hour reading forums and articles on lubricants for cutting, drilling and milling aluminum. Not once was any type of wax mentioned. In fact, the overwhelming suggestion across all was ATF, WD-40 or a mixture of both. That machine shop you worked in… are they still in business? ;-)

The WD in WD-40 stands for "water displacement". It's a solvent, not a lubricant.

Your ticking stick needs a square cut on its pointed end. The one in your video was not cut square and when you transferred the measurements the new full size templet was smaller than the space you recorded.
I was a little off on this comment a year ago. It was the top edge of the tick stick hitting the header. It made the pattern off by the thickness of the stick.
Why not just use the snake on the contoured surface? Instead of using the ticking method.
