just a footnote, David Rodriguez is a Texas lawyer who lives in Amsterdam,NL. An amazing person and a really nice guy.Beautiful song and Lyle Lovett's version of his song truly does it justice. Thank you.
@TheCindella2 You said it. I've never listened to this song just once, always at least twice. I like seeing the look on the face of someone who's never heard it when I put the record on. They always lean toward the speakers while I tilt my head back and close my eyes and smile. And when I say "Mind if we hear that again cause its just so damned good?" they just smile and say "Sure". God bless David Rodriguez for writing it and Lyle for doing it.
It's been one of my favorite tunes since I first heard it... I remember hearing Shake do it at the Kerrville Music Festival in the late 80's or early 90's - Ever since then it's been on my list of "the very best songs ever written!!" I'd heard Lyle do it before too and I also have the Step Inside This House CD - but this is an excellent version!! Thanks Mouldytone!!
This is by far my favorite cover to perform live. Lyle's version is pricelessly arranged, and I love getting to see the whole band build up that warm tone.
Lyle Lovett's subtle and sublime outrageousness is like a magnet for me. He looks like a protrait of Elvis done by Modigliani, and is still so incredibly sexy. This song is gorgeous.
I could listen to Lyle sing the phonebook. Throw in a great song and he'll knock it out of the park. He's got a long list of songs but, this has gotta be my favorite.
IMHO this is the best damn song ever written. And Lyle OWNS it, even if he didn't write it. These are the type of lyrics you either write or you don't. Unfortunately, most don't.
Sometimes, a song and its singer are melded together into a combination that can't be beat. Though others sing this song well, no one in my opinion does it quite as well as Lyle.
@hitechaf I used to listen to Shake Russel & Dana Cooper at Grins in College Station back then. Little did I know then how great the magic was that they made with their music & lyrics. I only know that it still inspires me & I do not have a copy of any of their early music magic from the old times... As enamored with Lyle's version as I am, I'd really like to hear Shake's version.
Hello. This clip, along with a few others that I've uploaded was recorded quite a few years ago off free to air TV. The show was 'Sessions at West 54th'. This particular session was recorded on September 27th 1998. There are some 'Sessions at West 54th' episodes available on DVD but I've never found a copy of this Particular Lyle Lovett performance.
I love this song
One of those songs that should never end….
Lyle can sing a grocery list and make it so profound and beautiful.
If he’d sing mine, well I believe I’d never stop writing that list.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Thank you for this.

Such a masterful performance of a beautiful song by the brilliant David Roland Rodriguez, may he rest in peace.
All I can say is damn .rip
I'm sad the last comment is over a month ago. More people should listen to this type of music.
So extraordinary. Beautiful singer and story teller .
They are all favorites, but I do believe this is probably my #1 favorite by Lyle...with Church a really close second. Thanks so much for posting this!

Lyle Lovett= Country music's last hope.

The best he's ever done! He does own this song as stated below. And there's something extra special in this live performance, so intimate!
I can't believe I never really listened to him before- I've definitely been missing out. It's been a treat today to hear a lot of his tunes.
David Rodriguez was a true genius.
Thank you for posting these Lyle gems, Mouldytone
