When it comes to philosophy, Plato is one of the world's best known and most widely studied philosophers. He was the student of Socrates and the teacher of Aristotle. The Allegory of the Cave can be found in Book 7 of Plato's most well-known work "The Republic". In the allegory, he compares the effect of education on our nature. It was written over 2000 years ago but there are many aspects of the discussion that are still relevant today.

Hi guys,
This video is actually two videos in one. The one on the left is a literal visual description of Plato's Allegory of the Cave, published around 380BC. The one on the right is a depiction of how the allegory is still relevant today.
Cheers
Such an important concept! Recently I've given up telling this story and opted to use the Matrix as a contemporary example that most people seem to grasp easier and faster.
I've always been interested in Plato's allegory of the cave. I don't think the internet is really the answer to finding out what the figures on the wall really are. But it is a lot better than watching the news. Really enjoy how you did the split and showed both of the times simultaneously though.
That's fair enough. The allegory can be interpreted any number of ways and I'll admit, it depends on how you use the internet as to whether it can assist you to become enlightened or not. Cheers.
This is a misrepresentation of the Allegory of the Cave. It is not about "discovering reality" in a general sense. The Allegory of the Cave is specifically about Plato's theory of forms.
yeah i remember reading the allegory in college and i don't recall any of this...i thought it was more about how something like a triangle in the literal sense does not exist and is only an idea or concept. i could be wrong, it's a bit fuzzy now
Peter Whitaker its not to extent you claim. I am professional in media for decades. worked for major news channels and all that Socrates said can be applied.
example: politicians and media pretends everything. one thing is reality other thing is when camera starts rolling. it gets edited. things from video get removed, combined and presented to people not how it was but how they want you to see it.
its easy to see that.
socrates was like prophet, i am shocked to what level he depicted modern media and politics.
Plato's Allegory has always been an interesting one. I especially love your "split screen comparison" of the metaphor with our modern world.
Cheers
I love this. . upon rediscovery of plato's allagory of a cave. . i came up with the exact same thoughts of our modern society and how it relates. . .good video!
Why is it the duty of the enlightened to help the unenlightened?
I struggled with this. It can be argued that the enlightened have no obligation to return. Some believe there's no obligation but they return out of compassion. Others believe that there is a moral duty to benefit mankind.
A great little explanation of the allegory. I like how you used modern day elements to compare with the time the story was first told.
Cheers James
Nice illustrations
This really says a lot about society... and yet we live in one
This video is absolutely fantastic!!!
"The workers have nothing to lose but their chains"
The Plato cave has nothing to do with the net but with what we concider as a real world. We are in a simulation universe. But its a good paradigm.Greetings from Greece.
Great job explaining it better than my English teacher man, I actually understand now!
Is the person who leaves the
cave the equivalent of the whistleblower of today?
A more modern day retelling of Plato's Cave is: Jonathan Livingston Seagull. Allegory at it's finest.
This is my life.
THE best example of this imo is when people talk about God and his goodness, and are attacked or called stupid. Feel sorry for those who dont know God
GridironWarPlans It makes way more sense to look at it the other way around. people are trapped in church by their parents for so long that they start believing the shadow puppets. It's the duty of athiests to show them how delusional and brainwashed they are.
***** i feel bad for them too. the church has been lying to people just like society has. that does not mean God is fake, though. Our culture simply does not know Him because we have been lied to about what God is.
GridironWarPlans Yes exactly, organized religion is the problem, not religion in general. I have no issue with people following their beliefs, but forcing them on others using fear tactics and ostrifieing non-believers is not okay. The point of religion was originally to get people to work together, not divide them.
***** the original idea was to get people to betheir highest selves, coming ogether would come from that
Theres just one problem here
This is basically just “touch grass” lmao
who's here from reddit?
I am
Please don't vote, guys...
more like, "please vote in the primaries next time and make sure you vote in the mid term elections and your local elections that occur on non-federal race election days in many jurisdictions."
***** It's been a big show from the start. And way too much fighting instead of truly trying to solve problems.
Hillary lies all the time; claiming to not support large banks and corporations AKA her biggest donors, claiming to have always been for gay marriage (you can easily look up a video of her claiming the opposite), etc. Plus the Clinton administration has a history of shady practices like these emails, ignoring FBI audits for information they hide involving the Benghazi incident, and more. I encourage you to look into the Clinton administration's corrupt past and present; I've only given small examples.
Lastly, how the hell is Donald Trump, a millionaire nobody, a presidential candidate? How the hell will he "fix the economy" that stands on the horribly inflated American dollar (no longer backed by gold or anything; it's just paper now) that is printed infinitely by the "Federal" Reserve (a non-government entity)?
Politics here have always been bullshit, but this year takes the cake and it absolutely baffles me that people actually stand next to either of these people and vote for them. I can't wrap my head around it...
So not voting is your solution?
Nora Markham Yes. Nobody is telling the truth.
Allegories are the refuge of the lazy philosopher
👍
This is totally a misrepresentation of the allegory. It is actually not about society or its elements but about the nature of reality.
this is beyond incorrect
