Bhutan advertises itself as the most peaceful country. There are many refugees in Nepal who still want to return back to their country. I hope Bhutan sorts out this issue very soon, or the world's going to know about this dark side of Bhutan.
Bhutan is peaceful , no doubts about it. Until the nepalese came along with their Gurkhalnd ideology of separate land. can't even believe it. Some one coming to your house and claiming it as theirs. Looks like they didn't study properly. otherwise the term " In Rome do what Romans do" might have avoided the situation. It's been almost 4 years since the video was posted but I knew about the bhutanese nepali or lhotsam refugees only recently. I am from the west of Bhutan and my ethnic is ngalop, I must agree that we have never learned about this in school and I have been researching about this issue a lot. I hate to admit that ethnic cleansing was a part of Bhutan but people should also not forget that 1/5 of lhotsams were still there in the country. I guess the king just saw lhotsams as a bigger threat to taking power from the ngalops as the population was increasing, I also learned that at that time Bhutan was planning to join the UN nation or so (correct me if I am wrong) , inorder to join the organization Bhutan needed to have a certain amount of population so may be that's how Lhotsams were driven out of the country. What the king and the government did was wrong and I am sure there were better ways to deal the problem but the country was so underdeveloped that they needed help. Not everyone in Bhutan are racists, the situation are much more better than how it was after the fifth king was crowned also he did take back some of the bhutanese nepali refugees back to the country after he saw the situations. Edit: I don't mean to seek sympathy for the actions Bhutan has done because the wound may never heal and I am sure no matter how many apologies we make can never be enough to put an end to the sufferings people faced. But I hope there could be better ways to grow together without hatred and where this topic could be educated without any tamper to the real history of ethnic cleansing in Bhutan.
You are right in some places, but Bhutan actually became part of the UN in 1968, in the reign of the third king, and there is no ceiling of population to join the UN, all peace loving nations are free to join. The actual reason the people had to leave the country was because of a minority of anti-nationals after their own selfish ideals who ran their propaganda and fished in nepali people (very few of those mind you) that ran a bad image against lhotshams. Most of the people who were forced to leave the country didn't even know about the riots and were sent off by the evil army officials (notice the usage of evil) who were after their land and property (mainly orange orchards). There was no part of the king played in sending off innocent people. It was because the army officials beat and tortured them into singing voluntary country leaving agreements that they actually had to go.
As a grandson of a Bhutanese refugee, the story told by my grandfather was horrifying. More than half of the people died while traveling from Bhutan to Nepal. My grandfather left all his land in Bhutan and came to Nepal. It was a total genocide act by Bhutan. That's not a country portrayed as peace-loving should act. But I am grateful to Nepal for providing my grandfather a place to call home. Now I am in America living through the UN program but Bhutan will always have a negative impression on my heart. What can you expect from a country who sold more than 700 youths to Japan as a slave?

The statement made by refugee Nepalese is totally false. Being in the land of Bhutan, one should follow the rules and regulation of that country. That time in 1994, the southern Citizens of Bhutan, so called Nepalese made social movement going against the rules of the government, trying to separate Bhutanese citizens into two groups (Bhutanese and Nepalese) with different religion and culture, which is totally not acceptable. A country can have a rule that must be followed by all citizens not selectively. Hence, two bring law and order, the country adopted to fix those going against country, that time Nepalese who attempted to fight against government fled. This is the reason why they left Bhutan and became refugee of Bhutan.

Wouldn't "most intense campaigns of persecution in the world" usually mean they've all been tortured, imprisoned, or killed? Maybe Mao, Stalin, Hitler, the Kims, etc., don't stand out to the writers and producers here for their examples of "intense" and "persecution," but I'm fairly sure this doesn't rise to that level, difficult and sad as some of the behaviors and the loss of citizenship and residency have been. Bhutan does not make it easy for those of other religious and ethnic persuasions to live there, but why is this expected? They have been transitioning to democracy and I don't recall that there is any requirement, political, moral, or otherwise, that a country's king or its people have to choose to be a multicultural melting pot. Bhutan should have to accept Maoism? Hinduism? The Nepalese language? The fate of Sikkim? The failure to grasp that in the interviews is shocking as well.

The very nepalis who migrated to Sikkim, just like Bhutan 400 years ago, betrayed their King and joined hands with the Indian government in 1971 after growing in population and becoming the majority there which led to the end of Sikkims monarchy. This is the biggest reason for this exodus by the Bhutanese government, it's their main fear.

The austronesian paleo Dai ( Mong Mou and Shan hills ) , Indo-Chinese descent - Sino Tibetian Chutian and the erstwhile Tibeto Burman Bodos ( Mech ) of Assam , Darjeeling formed and powerful kingdom . We still have Nepalis in Bhutan and they are happy here. Our king, queen and government is still doing good to all of us here. Terrorists attack in 2003 has got more of Nepal ethnics therefore, what to do. Our government did what they had to do for the country.
Bhutan has to display it's power in a restless region. Other countries in the region have cleansed ethnicities before or doing it right now. All the countries in South Asia are India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar (which is more south-east but we'll allow it), Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. Now, looking through the history of these countries, almost all of them have done ethnic cleansing or are suppressing a minority. India have done it to separatists in the East of its country and the Sikh genocide in 1984. Pakistan have been suppressing the Baluchis, a group who occupy the state of Baluchistan, and claim they were illegally annexed in 1947. Afghanistan hasn't, mostly due to the turmoil and civil war on it's land, but with several small societies living in Afghanistan, it is likely. Nepal is a mostly peaceful country so hasn't really done any of this. Bhutan has been killing 100,000 Nepalese refugees who used to live in southern Bhutan. Their void was filled by Indian separatists, leading to Operation All Clear in 2004. Bangladesh hasn't been doing ethnic cleansing, but for years Hindus and Muslims have been clashing in Bangladesh. During Bangladesh's independence war, approximately 3 million people died. Atrocities everywhere in the streets of Dhaka. So while we can be sure there is some high ethnic tension and discrimination there, cleansing is acted upon immediately by the UN. Myanmar's civil war started because of cleansing in the Rohingya district of the population, so you can't really the rebels for starting a war. Sri Lanka suppressed it's ethnic Tamil minority, which in turn led to a 60 year war with the Tamil Tigers, a group regarded by the US as a terrorist group. The Maldives hasn't been doing any of this as far as I know because of the amount of land they don't have, there isn't anything to lose blood over. The Bhutanese government were probably frightened by the amount of people in the south and thought they could start a revolution. After all, Bhutan is one of the last remaining monarchies. That's why they keep the communist party under control and ban them from Bhutanese politics. Bhutan is slowly evolving from a monarchy to an authoritarian state, and it needs to display it's power and dominance, to show it is not a weak country. This stuff is wrong, but the reason is fear, power and control. Bhutan knew it would be backed by India, so never worried about invasion. Bhutan is not a North Korea, but more of a Britain in Ireland.
The situation on the ground is very different from what is portrayed in the media. It doesn't take much to divide human beings and divisions based on cast, creed, ethnicity and faith always existed in this part of the world. That being said, what Bhutan has done in the past was not necessarily based on ethnicity rather a strong sense of national sovereignty which was constantly under threat from two giant neighbours(India and China). And the threat is not gone today even after the king gave away absolute monarchy and set up parliament and elections. China still has border disputes with Bhutan and India also holds some power over Bhutan's economy and elections. Lastly, what the king and the government did in the 90's has to be looked from both the sides.

The Lhotshampa faced a variety of factors that led to their displacement, including:
Ethnic and political oppression: The Bhutanese government responded to ethnic unrest in 1990 with violence, including the imprisonment, torture, and rape of citizens.
The Bhutan Citizenship Act of 1985: This act contributed to the displacement of the Lhotshampa.
Labeling as illegal aliens: Bhutanese authorities labeled the Lhotshampa as illegal aliens.
Military force: Many Lhotshampa claim that the military forcibly evicted them, and made them sign documents stating they left willingly.

@@pramisgurung7134 Bro, I'm Nepali and I'm ashamed of our government.

As this happened in 1994 and now 2019.. what if Bhutan goes on saying We don't want foreign interference in there domestic/internal affairs. Straight hand palm on India,China, and Nepal.. all this country will have nothing but to stay mute. Lol
It isn't true television was banned in early 80s .
Thus i am tempted to visit Bhutan, Nepali, and then Tibet. At the least i want to figure out what's going on in person.
Bhutan is protecting itself from śáv-àgéś
Bhutan is peaceful country. Those who went against the country’s culture, traditions and laws were kicked out to protect the nation and loyal patriotic citizens.
Tibet is lovely. Definitely visit. Go to the serfs' museum in Lhasa. Amazing.
this clips shows only people driven out of bhutan but does not show why they were kicked out only half truth has been told.
Kinley Wangchuk I know :')
They told exactly that they were EXPELLED from Bhutan ! Their property was confiscated , And you call yourself Buddhists ! What a shame . Buddhism teaches us NOT TO HARM ANYONE . But you expelled poor people , so you are just like a nazis practicing ethnic cleansing .
they were kicked out for not wearing bhutenese clothes and not accepting the culture so its stupid that they are kicked out for such a small mistale
I am from India, I never knew such thing ever happened to our fellow hindus. We hindus have suffered the most in the world sadly. Bhutan we assumed you are a peacefull country don't do such thing
So the conclusion is if u don't wear cloths resembling the place where you belongs to or don't speak your national language or a . Then you have to leave that place . When why not all those Tibetan decended leave Bhutan and go Tibet??? ????
Indeed !!! Drukpa Kunley should appear again in Bhutan and educate them :)

End of Bhutan started with this. History will not be kind to Bhutan.
I, as a Russian nationalist, fully support the deportation of Hindus and Nepalese from Bhutan, since Bhutan is a unique Tibetan cultural Buddhist state, and it should remain so
@@МеталВантузъархив As a Nepali, I fully believe that all orthodox christian russian should be deport from western europe and north america because these regions ( ie North America and Western Europe) have unique protestant Christianity culture.
A kingdom so desperate and fearful of losing its power that it kicks out its citizen just because they speak different language.
India has many languages. Many Bengali speakers, Nepali speakers, does this mean India should kick its own citizens out?? Such a shame Bhutan
LMAO do you even know why they were kicked out 😂? Bhutan has over 18 different languages like... India!! so why weren't they kicked out!?
Bengali people of India were always Indian. Many Indian freedom fighters were Bengali. Sikkim people voted to join India. Thats why India doesn't kick anyone.
@@knowledgedesk1653 Sikkim’s referendum was a joke. Bhutan feared the Nepali population would engineer another revolution just like Sikkim and Bhutan will be annexed by India. That they kicked out Nepalis

@Choeeing Thubten Jatsho yes bro, now the UN also accept Nepal as its trusted friend, world has seen how both bhutan ignored and banned their own citizens and India denied them shelter atlast Bhutanese Nepali took sheltere in Nepal, which the Nepal gov did best of their abilities, they provided shelter and food, and also dont forget Nepal was going through domestic war (moist war) which was the time or crisis in Nepal but also Nepal stood of with them. Nepalese and Neplai government has done much more then their capacity in this regard.
Big respect to Nepal and Nepali
this clip is from years ago but was uploaded recently...actually now Bhutan has t.v,phones,etc...and there are still many Nepalese-Bhutanese in Bhutan...but these refugees were kicked out because they threatened the king, burning the county's flag,etc...because they were not ready to abide by the rules of the country and now there are ministers that are Nepalese-bhutanese(Lotshampa).
p.s...its not compulsory to wear gho&kira(national dress)except when going to schools and offices.
Says who ?! Bhutan Ministry of labour is selling their own youth , 700 of them , to work like slaves in Japan (2017 onward, programme is called : Earn and learn . )
In 5000 years of nepal hisotry, nepal have never chased away any people on the basis of their ethnicity and religion, we have accepted all the refugee no matter wherever they came form, even to those who have come to nepal. "Never kill the refugee" have always been slogan of Nepal. this make nepal far more than bhutan.
you are right brother, every country will do the same if their people burn their national flags, threaten the king, goes against the law..and etc.. this video is really trying to.disturb the soverginity and noble friendship between two countries; Bhutan and Nepal.
@@kapil4417037 i agree on that and what good did it bring to the country; assassination of royal family, overthrowing govt, and revolt. So what Bhutan did was simple keep the clean slates to the country and chase out the people who revolted and retaliated. To me, ethnic people here in Bhutan are kind, beautiful and generous, they do share their part of stories what actually happened and the cause of the controversy.
Ps. If someone burns one's flag infront of you, do you think the person would stay quite and join you. If so countries colonized in the past should get revenge for slavery in the past.
First know why the Nepali-Bhutanese were forced to protest.Ask your Government about that, they gonna say the same.Just because they didn't want to adopt their culture, just because they had no identity. That was the main reason.&I have no hate to Bhutan or Bhutanese.
The system is to blame... And it's not just Bhutan's problem. Fight between perception of power one's always have led to innocent sufferings....
I really felt and saw their pain in refugee camp...they were very friendly nepalese...just like us....even nepalese govt. Could not do anything...but now atleast they live happily in America!!
you know what you did wrong, I hope you have a good life, and stop this nonsense
We also have Buddhists-Tamangs, Shakyas. These people don't mix well with the native Hindu population.
????LMAO.what😂😂😂shakyas,tamangs????😂😂😂
Kick them or keep them. That’s none of our business, but we will kick out Ungreatful people who are ungreatful toward our king, country, culture and traditions of Bhutan.

Ethnic cleansing like this is everywhere criminal !!!
When I watched this video , really I hate to Bhutan, this is not humanity

Originally from Nepal, they were given lands and granted full citizenship by our generous and kind hearted king as a gesture of friendship towards Nepal, but the Nepali/bhutanese started going against the government and the king who was so kind to them, killings and violence started, they wanted to live under their own rules, lived under no rules, had no consideration or respect for the overall bhutanese people, they wanted their own small government and did not want to follow national rules, in my opinion that is like biting the hand that feeds you, this is the primary reason why they had to be expelled from the country, the riots and public defamation against the country and the king could not be controlled peacefully. You cant find the truth on the news and videos like this give you a one sided story. Even today, fake articles are being written by nepalese about what happened back then. Research pls...
