"He was there the day the towers fell" is a reference to the 9/11 attacks. Gerard saw the Twin Towers fall and it became a turning point in his life, inspiring him to create My Chemical Romance.
Also! The towers are about 9/11... Gerard Way was on his way to work when the second tower fell... He was really effected by thisand it made him quit his day job and put all his focus on MCR

I've been a fan since 2006 when I was only 12... I love all their albums for different aspects, but if forced I would definitely choose the Black Parade and older, and this song definitely reminds me a lot of that... I can even feel the sound of their first album I bought you bullets... I can't describe how this makes me feel!
Interesting you noted his voice. While I don't think it's changed all that much (they are on tour right now and people have noted he sounds great) Gerard has said on stage things about his appearance, age, and voice. Talking about how he's an old 45 year old, he's said things like "grey hair don't care", and overall they seem to be very very happy and really enjoying the moment. From what i've read, he and the other members were struggling quite a bit to keep going back before they split up. They weren't happy, everything was forced. Gerard felt pressure to sound perfect and look the part. It seems now they are back and actually truly enjoying what they are doing, which shows on stage. They are now accepting that aging is inevitable and that happiness is better than the worry of being their past younger selves.
Oh and also, his voice being drowned out a bit with the instrumentals is a very intentional decision. If you go listen to their first album it is very reminiscent of that time. I believe they wanted to take that sound and bring it into a modern vibe.

This is great - made me excited again too see them next year.
I feel like this is more a reflection on society maybe- I’m pretty sure Gerard would have something to say in his way there.

In the song it says He saw the towers fall and so he wandered down the road. Gerard Way said in an interview that he saw the twin towers fall in person from a pretty close distance. This trauma caused him to change his outlook on life which caused him to start MCR (we will all build towers of our own). Later on they had a big fallout with their drummer Bob Bryar (only to watch the roots Corrode)
