And conversely, Betty White probably wouldn't have played Blanche as well as Rue McClanahan ended up doing (Betty and Rue initially read for the parts that the other ended up getting-- Rue for Rose, and Betty for Blanche); though in all fairness, earlier in her career (Mary Tyler Moore Show or so), Betty White DID play a character that was extremely similar to Blanche (except for the Southern belle bit).
