William Pitt the Younger was actually 24 when he became PM for the first time in 1783 - Blackadder embellished a bit but not all that much :)
His father was also PM but it wasn't hereditary, it just gave him a leg up.
He is the 2nd longest serving PM with a total of 18 years.
He died aged just 46 having suffered with multiple illnesses since childhood.

MP at 22, Chancellor of the Exchequer at 23, PM at 24. The overachiever's overachiever.

William Pitt the Younger was 24 when he became Prime Minister, NOT a child. The joke is that because he was so much younger than any other Prime Minister (including his father, Pitt the Elder who was in his late 50's when he became Prime Minister), he was a child by comparison as most PM's were double his age.

Blackadder II was Renaissance. Blackadder III is Age Of Enlightenment. [Late 1700's/Early 1800's, reign of [mad] King George III, Regency of the Prince George (played here by Hugh Laurie) who would eventually become King George IV.]
William Pitt The Elder and William Pitt The Younger were both prime ministers of parliament in this era. Pitt The Younger first became prime minister at 26; extremely young for a politician, but not THIS young :)
I did not initially like this series as much as 2 and 4 but it's still really really good and as I've gotten older I've come to appreciate Series 3 more

Blackadder 2 was after the Renaissance, which was 15th-16th century. This is set at the end of the 18th Century into the 19th Century, so around the time of the American and French Revolutions. The Prince of Wales’ father is George 3rd, who lost the American colonies.

Given the time of year, and now that you've seen an episode of series 3, you might want to check out Blackadder's Christmas Carol. It's hilarious. It was made between series 3 and 4, so you've probably now seen enough to appreciate everything in that. It has great cameos from Miriam Margoyles, Jim Broadbent and Robbie Coltrane.

I played Blackadder III in a local run ( 12 shows). We did Ink and Incapability, Nob and Nobility and Amy and Amiability. I had never performed before but had an absolute great time playing the lead. Forgot a few lines in the early run but everything came together in the end. Best bit was my son playing the Scarlet Pimpernel.

William Pitt the Younger (To distinguish him from his father,) became Prime Minster very young, at the age of 24.
His detractors claimed that his administration (formed on 19th December) wouldn't last until Christmas. Pitt would serve as Prime Minster for the next 18 years.

You mean Regency, not Renaissance. The Renaissance was between the 14th and 17th centuries. Blackadder the Third was set in the late 18th century, with George III on the throne, and the George played by Hugh Laurie is the future Prince Regent and ultimately George IV.

Okay, Pitt the Younger wasn't quite *that* young, but he did become a member of Parliament at the age of 21.
While the personalities don't change much, as the series go on, Blackadder moves down the social ladder (started as a prince in 1, a lord in 2, now a butler to the Prince Regent in 3...he'll just be a captain in the army in 4) and Baldrick gets dumber.

Also do watch both the 45min special Blackadder's Christmas Carol and the 15min charity special The Cavalier Years between the Third and Goes Fourth.
Watch the millennium special Back and Forth after Goes Fourth after an interval of at least several months.

Pitt the Younger, who was a real Prime Minister and still the youngest person to have been Prime Minister (which is why they're making this joke), was not actually a teenager, lol. He was very young - he became PM when he was 24 in 1783 (just after the American Revolution and just before the French Revolution - so he had a lot on his plate!) and he had served briefly as Chancellor just before becoming PM too! His father had already served as Prime Minister about 20 years prior when Pitt the Younger was around 8 years old and so, whilst their may have been a bit of nepotism (not in the traditional sense as Pitt's father had died by the time his son even joined Parliament), it seems as though Pitt the Younger had developed a very stern persona and possibly had a fair amount of understanding as to what being PM entails. He is widely regarded as being 1 of our best Prime Ministers, being PM twice, fighting Napoleon in between, and dying at the young age of 46!

Megan, I don't know how far along you are in the Blackadder series (the observation about the different era is correct), but the four series are chronologically moving through England's progression in history whilst simultaneously telling the gradual demise of Blackadder's status.
It's been a while since I watched the full series, but I consider the third series the best. Blackadder is vicious, conniving, ambitious, but his social status in this series fits the character the best. Just enough power and influence to have his foot in the door, but not enough to have that door opened for him makes his ambition just that little bit MORE vicious and conniving. If I had to watch this series for the first time based on strength (worst to best), it's be 1, 4, 2, 3.
PS. On a personal note, never stop over-analyzing. Just be aware you're doing it, and draw the right conclusion in the end. Cherish your intelligence!

When you get around to seeing the first series, you'll notice a big difference. First Edmund was an idiot -- a schemer, a wannabe mastermind, but one doomed to failure by his own stupidity. And First Baldrick, despite being as scruffy and disgusting as his future incarnations, served as the voice of reason who tried (and mostly failed) to keep First Edmund out of trouble. The show was pretty good that way, but when it came time to do the second series, it was decided that the writing and the humor just flowed more naturally with master and servant swapping functions in the narrative, and Rowan Atkinson's and Tony Robinson's acting styles also lent themselves better to such a swap. And they were right.

Don't bother with the first series. It's crap. Blackadder Goes Forth is excellent though.

The very first series of Blackadder is nowhere near as funny. The fortunes of the series changed dramitcally when British comedian Ben Elton joined the team from series 2 onward. Series 2 and 3 are very good but series 4 is a masterpiece.
