Why can't the Young Lions have similar arrangement with 4 foreign players to level playing fields with the clubs?

DPMM brings a higher level of standard to the SPL. Our local players get to play with relatively stronger technical players and give more chances to improve. Do we really want to see 4 rounds of local clubs like YL vs Khalsa or have them face tougher competition like DPMM to improve themselves

Sorry to disappoint Neil, but for all his talks about Hougang, they will no longer play in Hougang this season. Jalan Besar instead.
And our league will run from 4 stadium here, as all local-based team share stadium. And for all negative talks of artificial turf, the league will be played mostly on that turf, with Jalan Besar, Tampines Hub and Jurong East all on artificial surface already. Do anyone got info about the Bishan surface?

Yes good to see the growth, everything needs healthy discussion to improve. This is something we do lack in sg glad to see more people getting into it

Thanks for talking about local football, but I think this discussion ignores the context and is not based in reality. Bring back these teams? But who to bring them back? Which investors will invest in this until the product is better?

We can have all the leagues but end of the day who is paying the players? our gov can invest in technology but if there is no quality players in the league then what is the point in such investment? I would prefer the gov invest in the players, so young players can see where will their future be if not parents will say "play football got what future?" being a delivery rider/driver or a PHV pays more. Bringing more local clubs will just thin the fans, bring in foreign neighbouring teams and have about 4 local clubs (north south east west) the talk about east side or west side better whether is it food or transport, now we have another debate to talk about, football. Playing neighbouring countries also creates a competitive edge.

In our case I think the FAS/gov should try to adopt a pull strategy. Try to incorporate more teams into the SPL by either reviving the various dormant local clubs or getting neighbouring country’s clubs to join us because by doing so with more teams comes more/better players which in turn should create more hype hence more viewership & support for the league.
With more support and higher attendance at the stadiums SPL would then be able to get more sponsorship monies and with these monies they should then use it to improve and further professionalise the league and in turn attract better players from around the region which would then further increase the quality of the league and bring in more sponsorship monies again when more fans throng the stadiums to watch these higher quality players.
When that happen a virtuous cycle would have been set in place to hopefully keep the league going for a long long time. Players salaries should have then increased to an eye popping level and when that happens the parents and children themselves would think of a career in football in a different light.
And that’s also when you will have healthy participation from 75% of the population (Chinese) to increase the talent pool for the league and national team itself. Bingo!

The reason why swimming is of a higher esteem in SG is because it is an individual sport where a talented and hardworking swimmer will have a higher chance to succeed on his/her own (Joseph Schooling’s Olympic gold medal) as opposed to a team sport like football where even the greatest goal scorer himself Cristiano Ronaldo is unable to lead his national team to WC glory despite him playing at an insanely top level for so many years.
Bet Cristiano would have given Michael Phelps a run for his money if he had chosen swimming right from the start. This is the reason why so many parents and the kids themselves choose individual sport over football. They are in sports not for the passion and childhood dream but for success and glory. Wake up!
PS. By the way Han Keong when are you coming to the coffeeshop near my place? Happy to
    treat you kopi! 😂

Talk about swimming, Neil brought up a very good point about the Chinese Swimming Club. But then when one run through our swimming team’s roster, all the socio-economical background, it’s not hard to see the swimmers all came from very well to do family. “Papa and mama fund”, as May Schooling used to put it, allows many of our swimmers to train in the US too.

    • @sunnyang6464

That is because all these rich papa & mama want their children to have a higher chance to succeed in a more glamorous and lucrative sport like swimming hence the socio-economic background of the youngsters in swimming are from the higher end of the spectrum. No surprise here for me.

DPMM FC is just a club that needs competition and challenges for their own benefits no matter how they are well-run as a football club. Do not compare them with Albirex Niigata as the Japanese outfit has been an exceptional club that already provided the platform and has been involved in developing youths in Singapore (Albirex currently have youth teams comprising of local players). Why Singapore Premier League? DPMM FC instead can try plying their trades in Malaysia, Thailand or even Vietnam if they believe they are one of the best in SEA. Some mentioned having DPMM will improve the standards of SPL. Or is it the other way round?

I know I’m gonna get flak for this but after looking at the sad state of Singapore Football league - clearly there is no one in the FAS that has the right experience to run a professional league. Thus maybe we instead do these:
    1. Return to the Malaysian league. The League is now going into privatisation and JDT is one good example of where they heading. We can then send in LionCity Sailors as the club that wil represent Singapore- not a national team but a proper club. Imagine the glitz and glamour of the Malaysian league with LionCity Sailor, JDT, Selangor, Kedah, Sri Pahang… it will also toughen our boys a lot more than playing in the SPL
    2. I know the question will then be that LionCity can only fit 24 players max - that is where we should just go back to restarting the NFL as a semi-pro league - this will allow players who are serious to grow to fight for a pro contract and not just go to LionCity Sailor but also other league overseas. At the same time - we will probably see more Chinese players who can’t leave their job but still able to play football regularly…. And if they realise they are good then they can take the next step in being a professional…
The fact is I feel the SPL need to be shut down and return back to the basic… cos it’s too messy right now and the national team is suffering from it….

Please stop talking about returning to Malaysia. Our football standards will drop immensely if all our talents are forced to be developed by only one club

You dont see the benefit ? But your players and goverment get more benefit from it. "Learn" how to make your supporters attend every match.
