    Super good and useful tips for a cutting board with the grain running lengthwise (horizontally). The only detail that I've noticed is that this is a endgrain cutting board. So a board with the grain running vertically. With this type of cutting board I would recommend to oil it frequently. This is to keep unwanted juices and water out. When the water enters on one side of the cutting board the fiber's swell up and the board bends towards the water side. After drying it on its side it will return to straight again. Stay sharp, Eke

    We are covid-19 pandemic new bakers at our home, and do need to remove greasy stains from our cutting boards. I really like your approach and will try it definitely. I will also take picture of before and after results to share hopefully. Additionally I really enjoyed your enthusiasm about not just cleaning but the ideas on not cutting certain foods on a wooden board.
    Best Regards, Sonja in SoCal.

    This is one of the few amateur 'cutting board cleaning' videos that got it right, so THUMBS UP! I'll make 3 minor critiques.
    1 - You can use ordinary food grade mineral oil found in any store like CVS, Target, etc. Professional cutting board oil is just a more thin/watery version that will soak in faster. 99% of home users don't need it and it won't make any difference. It just costs a lot more.
    2 - Extra virgin coconut oil will work just as well and is safe, will not go rancid, etc.
    3 - There is no need to heat the oil up. Room temperature is fine and will soak in just as well. Save yourself the time.

    Wood cutting boards are the best option, more specifically Hard Maple cutting boards. Plastic carries two risks: 1. Bits of plastic being transferred into your food as you chop. 2. Bacteria is hard to get out of the groves and not very well sterilized by a dishwasher.
    Hard maple on the other hand has capillaries that trap and suffocate bacteria. Hard Maple is also approved by the National Sanitation Foundation for commercial kitchen use so long as the cutting board is formed by a solid piece of wood as opposed to being glued.

    The only problem I have with using plastic or glass boards is that they dull your knives faster. It's easier to clean a board properly than it is to sharpen your knives constantly. For me, this means having two separate boards; one exclusively for meat and the other for veggies, fruit and such.

    I also use vinegar to disinfect. Another tip, you can find mineral oil (at least in the US) in the pharmacy aisles as a laxative. Groos, but true. Added bonus - food grade!
    I'd love a video on maintaining wood floors between 'big' deep cleanings. I vacuum & use one of those spray mop type things for sticky or crusty spots, but is there a better method? And for those deep cleanings, is there a way to clean wood floors most effectively? My downstairs is dark wood and these floors piss me off.

    I use food grade mineral oil and after drying, apply bees wax and again wipe off excess. On new boards use liberal amounts of the oil over the entire board, dry and then wax. for touch up conditioning, I usually warm up the oil and wax together and apply at the same time and buff up the board with clean dry towel. Washing in the sink with warm water and soap, without submerging, after each use is a good practice.

    good video. I only have a thick plastic cutting board. Our glass one fell and shattered into thousands of piece. I haven't had a wood one in quite awhile. Maybe, I will purchase a wood one and hold onto my plastic one as well. My plastic one is so big I can barely wash it in the sink. Today I took a soapy kitchen sponge and wiped it down. Then I dried it. After drying it, I put a little bit of hydrogen peroxide on it and wiped it. Then I rinsed a few times with just wet paper towels. I hate fighting with it in the sink. Perhaps I will toss it and get a smaller plastic one AND a wood one. I hate cleaning, but it has to be done ugh.

    aha, when you mention the hair commercial, I bet people notice how nice your hair looks! ;) anyhow, I've used vinegar before, but the salt helping to get anything ground in makes more sense. Do you prefer one over the other? I also am feeling ikky now b/c I have only ever used the same board for meat as for veggies & cheese (though cleaning and disinfecting before moving to each).

    Melissa, I love all your videos. But I haven't found one on cleaning wood kitchen cabinets. My kitchen cabinet doors have their handles in the middle of the door so of course everyone uses the bottom corner to open the door. Eventually they get a residue that feels sticky. I try to clean the cupboards weekly but still find this buildup that won't come off. What do you suggest?

    • @peggysue2354
      @peggysue2354 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try using baking soda and mineral oil. Use a sponge to clean dry up old greasy sticky residue. Then just wipe with lint free towel to remove leftover baking soda. Your cabinet will be clean and have a nice sheen to them.
