All the people criticizing the video for not just carrying a lighter, BUT.. Ferro rod & striker can come right out of water and work, function at 50 below 0, and I’m sure can be taken on an airplane without any suspicious looks…. Plus, it’s just plain FUN and satisfying to know how to use these !!
Funny story though. I had a firesteel kit on a plane and the officer completely ignored my lighter but had loads of questions for his superior about whether firesteels are permissible -_-
Exactly and those who say that also never tried to use a lighter when its -20 degrees celcius out, ive tried and no matter how good your butane torch or bic is it wont work unless you keep it warm in an inside pocket.
Nice one Chris. Enjoyed looking at your collection of firesteel. One thing I've found is that the bigger firesteel are easier for kids to handle and learn with. You showed a good selection. The clear tubes are an excellent idea and one I'll be adding to my firekit. I'm curious to see if they'll be suitable for charcloth as it's a really cheap form of tinder for me along with Sisal (jute twine) processed into its individual strands in another tube.
I keep a couple of fire starters on me everyday. I have a UST Strike Force and an Ozark Trails 5 in 1 knife in my backpack, a Quick Spark fire starter from Lifeline I keep in my pocket and a couple Paracord bracelets.
Seeing this video makes me want warmer days and want to go camping. Also use some to help light stuff on the old grill. Did that last year and I ended up making s'mores
Love your passion and always outstanding reviews, especially for people just starting out in prep's or bushcrafting or for the guy like myself sitting here with a broken back and can't do anything my preps are on hold but love you videos keep up the great work and God bless🖒🇺🇸🕇
Keep in mind that alot of people live off the grid in the middle of nowhere. Ferro rods and magnesium bars are a good backup for when your lighters run out of fuel and you won't be back in town anytime soon.
They all seemed pretty good to me. It really comes down to choosing the one you think will fit your need best. If the rod doesn't work then it is probably a user error and not a product error.
Gray Man Outdoors 4 Directions Bushcraft, Exotac, and Lightning Strike are my Go To’s all the way. Also... “all these companies including your bud and many others... use the Exact same Manufacturer.

It is a cool idea indeed! There is a product called Keep2 Go tubes that ive used for different things, including to keep the Fiberlight stuff that Chris had in this video. Same concept he was saying about keeping it waterproof and secure, but they have a loop on the cap, so u could even use the lanyard to carry it around ur neck.
Thanks Chris for keeping us informed about around gear and by that price wise and cheap good and great to give us that range and by the way thanks for getting me hooked to stanford outdoors place is great
Just went on Amazon and bought the Sharpal 101 6-in-1 because of this video. Looks like a good sharpening kit and easy fire starter all for under $10. Thanks for the video. Never would have come across this product without you.

I use plain jane firesteels - like you said the 1/2" x 6" is typical. But I also have a few smaller ones like 5/16"x4". I wrap some Gorilla duct tape on one end that I can use as tinder.

I'm looking for a firesteel in a canister form to protect it from the elements, and which would be lightning itself, e.g. the stick would have like an grease layer that would be the source of fire, instead of external elements. Wonder if such a forma exists.
Can the lightening strike ferro rod be replaced? I don’t think I would ever use the lightening strike if I bought it. I would treat it more like a souvenir. Too expensive to use

I have a cheapie ciggerette lighter in my kit the last two years. It hasn’t let me down yet.Its still more than half full.
Right on! Lighters are great for short term and quick FireStarting
Always good to have a lighter or two, but redundant redundancies are the name of the game.
Owen Hinsman I don’t get it,this guy won’t use a lighter but he’ll use cotton balls and petroleum jelly.
Working on a pretty solid go pack for backpacking this summer and one of those Tony Stark fire steels will be in it for sure!

Rad Brad If your knife has a 90’ degree spine... always the spine

Are the rods complete magnesium material or are the robs only coated?
You don’t have a push striker whre you push on the handle and it creates sparked by the handle going down the rod
That is the BlastMatch. It is from the company that has the StrikeForce which had a hollow handle with space for tinder.
