Highlands are great grazers!!! They will have that pasture down to nothing in no time so be prepared!!! I love Highlands!!! Just be careful once their horns all grow out!!! They can accidentally gore you without meaning to & that's not pretty!!! Don't be worried if they don't use the barn!!! Highlands will stand out in rain, sleet or snow & be comfortable because of there thick coats!!! They also enjoy cubes over grain!!! Straw bedding is better for them than shavings just so you know!!! Love them & GOD bless!!!

Excited to follow a channel close to its conception! Some suggestions regarding using the metal can for dog/livestock food. From experience (unfortunately), those cans are not impervious, to moisture, bugs, or air. I keep the feed in the bags and stack the bags up in the can, with just the top one open. That way the bag of the open one can be rolled down to help keep bugs out. And if moisture, bugs, mold, etc., do get in the can, it won't ruin all the feed. It also makes it easy to rotate the feed as you get more, so you always feed from the oldest bag. Hope you find this helpful!

Thank you! That is very helpful! Did not know that about the metal cans and we will start this as soon as we run it down a little!

I just stopped by as I was browsing through my subscription list and I noticed fresh farmers settling in with these gorgeous Scotich highland girls . We start from somewhere and am going to enjoy the adventure you guys have taken on . The set up the farm is great with the hills around . Tim get some Ariats on and mucking out the barn will be so much fun . Probably you could watch or join This Farm Wife : Meredith and Lawrence or some insights . They are fun to watch . Am sure there will be more eyes following you along as you grow with more livestock coming in . Enjoying the shows from Kleinburg ON . Be Blessed .

great video. i have 2 suggestions. Try stacking the hay bales on the cut edge side instead on the twine side, for it may help in preventing the mice from chewing the bale twine. In addition, try locating the salt and mineral blocks where there is no grass growing, for the salt will eventually kill the grass wherever the blocks are located, and the grass may never grow again in that location. Perhaps the salt blocks could be located under a roof at the side of the barn where nothing is growing anyway

Have you ever worked a farm with livestock, or is this your first go at it? What does your son think about the cows?
Good luck 🍀 with your new endeavors.

Try some alfalfa tablets to hand feed, so they get more friendly to you.
