  • Im back after a much needed vacation. Of course I didnt stop fishing, just stopped editing. And I was able to go to some really great places during my time off.
    So I took a trip out to the Colorado Springs area, and met up with a fellow youtube channel called "Fresh-Salt Fishing"! We fished eleven mile canyon, and the dream stream. While the fishing wasnt as epic as I thought it would be, it still was awesome! Colin was able to net quite a few fish at eleven mile, and I got a really nice one at the dream stream!
    Really I dont want to make excuses, but not sleeping for 36 hours before fishing the first day really took its tole, and thats why I suspect I didnt get many fish. I did have quite a few strikes, just I was way too slow with setting the hook. Everything was slow, it felt like I was in a dream the first day! HAHA
    By the way, if you have not seen Fresh Salt Fishing's channel before, I highly recommend you check them out! They have some amazing footage, and are excellent fisherman. The channel consists of two brothers with a van, and they go travel and fish many different parts of the US. From Florida Tarpon, to colorado small mountain stream trout! You can view their channel here... / @freshsaltfishing
    So later this week I am tying up an elk hair caddis for you guys, as that was definitely the winning pattern of the trip! In fact most of the fish were caught on that fly or other dry flies.
    As most of you ask what my gear setup is, here is a list of all the gear I used.

    You guys got the opportunity to fish some beautiful water. Even though you didn't slay em it still looked like a fun trip. Waiting for the monsoons to let up here in Cali so I can get back into the mountains. Lots of fish in there but really treacherous fishing right now. Hope you can get back to this stretch pretty soon, looks to be very "fishy".

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah we are having monsoons now, near me. Been tough, because every day around 1-3pm we will get lightning and heavy heavy rain. It was beautiful there for sure! Hoping soon to get back and try again. Even so, Colin got 6 really nice trout! I got one decent one. So, all in all, it was well worth the trip! HAHA

    I remember the Covey from the 1970's. It was a rather small shop that had been a residential house at one time. Great place. Guess success made it grow.

    Nice video! I’ve set out on trips with the sole intention of using only one method too, it’s fun! Challenging at times! Cool video! Water at the DS looked low? Makes for some easily spooked fish for me. I don’t think I can even tie on a #24 anymore! Thanks for sharing!

    Great video, I envy you fishing the San Juan (my favorite tailwater) and like you, I have better luck there than on the South Platte, my home water close to Denver. On my best day I've only caught a handful of nice fish on the Dream Stream (those fish have PHD's) and a lot of suckers. It's dry fly season so I've tied a bunch of Caddis dries and I hope to fish NM again soon, BTW, cute puppy on your home video. Tight Lines.

      You always kick ass at the place you’re the closest to and fish the most. I generally do well on any river I fish and I’m not even close to having the knowledge people at fly shops do. I think it’s just understanding hatches, reading water and presenting a good drift, easier said then done. It helps to fly fish easier rivers to learn on before trying some more technical rivers. I think the South Platte is the easiest River in the world.
      Before you think I’m telling you (McFly Angler) something new I was mainly talking to those that are new to fly fishing.

    11 Mile Canyon is indeed nice that’s where my dad and grampa used to take me when I was a kid, it’s where I learned to fly fish! Back then great fishing too large trout I remember catching a nice 4 pound rainbow on a Hares Ear first fish I caught on a fly rod.

    Nice video. Tell Colin about Flip Rocks. They have flip flops W/ankle strap and sandals both with interchangeable soles held on by extremely strong Velcro. I have a pair of each with studded soles one with felt also and one with just studs. He won't slip on those rocks. The owner Anthony is also a great guy who also fishes.

    Let me know when you go next time. I was there last Wednesday on zero sleep and we landed at least 35 trout over 16 inches between me and a buddy who had never fished it before.. 2.5 hour drive is nothing compared to your trip. I would suggest staying the night before up there in the camping areas in the canyon. The further you go up towards the dam the better the fishing gets. Seen some insane mayfly and trico hatches come off so thick that I couldn't even get a pool of 30 fish to look at a nymph.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I’ve had 35 fish trips as well my friend. Haha. Just the day depends. I’ve had days where I catch over 20 fish, and the next day catch 1, on the same river. Every day is different. In fact the two days we went, everyone we talked to said they didn’t do so well.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah man, its a good spot absolutely! Hopefully next time I get better luck! The previous time I went, a freak snow storm came through. I have the worst luck going out that way! HAHAHA This time, we had a bad rain storm come through about 3:00 the first day, so that could account for the tough fishing on "dream stream" the 2nd day. Not sure, but I know I have bad luck. HAHA Hoping my bad luck will break on my 3rd trip to eleven mile.

    • @highaf_fishingtv420
      @highaf_fishingtv420 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh Man, that weather can be bad at any moment it seems like. It's crazy, I though we were going to hydroplane going up there last week, the rain was very bad but we got super lucky with a 70 degree clear day in the canyon and the fish were very active in the riffles. I highly recommend stopping at the last bridge going towards the dam and fish both sides. I've seen monsters, and have hooked a few 20"ers in that spot. They seem to consistently feed there and will take both dries and nymphs all day. Tight Lines McFly. Love the videos.

    The dream stream is probably one of the hardest streams to fish in colorado, but it holds probably the most fish over 20 inches. I would suggest that you should get a guide on your next trip up there as for you, I understand it is a 5-6 hour drive. It's well worth it, especially as the landscape is beautiful and the views are breathtaking.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My channel isnt something that would allow for me to get a guide. I am trying to show people places they can go without spending a ton of money. So, if I paid a guide $400-600 for the day, that would kinda be cheating. HAHA

      McFly Angler Not really man. You aren't paying that money to access the water, you are paying money for expert knowledge from a local guide. Watching a 9 minutes long video of you slaying fish with a guide+tips and tricks from the guide would be much better than a video of you catching one fish IMO

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it would be better wouldnt it? Well, once I start making $600 per video then maybe I can think about paying a guide for each of my trips (every two weeks). LOL

      I fish CO several times a year. I usually end up in Angler's Covey at least once. I always at least buy a few flies I don't really need just to support the local business ( It's not unusual for me to have 1000+ flies in my tackle bag). I'm a big supporter of small businesses. I try to stop in as many local fly shops as possible and if nothing else, buy one of their T-shirts and/or hat for a souvenir. I try to buy the shop's hand tied flies over the factory flies. There's usually something a little different from the tier's perspective. When I find a good one or something I haven't seen before (material, color, or concept) and it works (or I just like the way it looks) I'll usually put one back to save and try to copy it when I get home.

    Question, from your experience fly fishing out in Colorado. Whats the biggest weight that you would ever really need out there?

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Boy that depends on where your going, and type of fishing. Back country streams where your only dry fly fishing, then 3wt will do just fine, even could get away with a 2wt exclusively. However if your going to nymph larger rivers, then you at times might need a 5wt for turning over the larger nymph rigs and dealing with the larger fish. Streamer fishing on rivers could require a 6-8wt. And there are pike, and bass out here also. Pike might need a 10wt, maybe more.

    • @kubaz8702
      @kubaz8702 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh man, I have a lot of setups. I fish many types of waters. But for this trip.... the 1st day it was a redington classic trout 3wt, and the 2nd day it was a 5wt rod I built. Both with piscifun sword 2 reels... and with double taper fly lines from RIO.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your interested, I can send you links to all those that you can purchase on Amazon. The price range on these setups are pretty inexpensive actually. Rods are in the $150 range (even the one I built myself). Reels are $50 range, and lines are the most expensive part! HAHA About $75-$90 for the line.

    • @THESPORTINGCAMP

      McFly Angler Yes please..that would be a great video for all beginners like me. I always wonder what experienced anglers are using. Thank you for the information. I just started this year and I have a 6wt and 8wt.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, I am not doing a video, because I have so so so many different setups! HAHA It really only works for specific river systems. Like a good starter rod for the San Juan, or a good starter rod for the Animas. Not necessarily a good starter rod, for the entirety of the US. But here are the links to that gear I was just talking about above.
      1st setup:
      Redington CT 8' 6pc 3wt - amzn.to/2v2HBJd
      Piscifun Sword 2 - 3/4wt - amzn.to/2OoBJSN
      Rio DT LT 3wt line - amzn.to/2Oto24Q
      2nd setup:
      5wt Custom built rod (no links to that)
      Piscifun Sword 2 - 5/6wt - amzn.to/2NVj1kA
      Rio Perception 5wt - amzn.to/2v0aOoh
      Sorry I thought the 2nd setup was the double taper, but its just the perception, also a great fly line.
      BTW, next week I have a review of the 3wt rod coming out. So check that out also! Its a good one, but mainly for smaller fish and small creeks.

      It is tough when you sleep literally 0 hours for sure. But just get a good night sleep the next night and it should fix the issue…. Not sure whatcha mean. Lol

    Don't give up at the dream stream, it's overflowing with fish at times.

      Nope, not giving up on it, it’s a beautiful fishery! However it just was a little slow when we went. That happens.

    Hey brother God bless I wish you would’ve had a more enjoyable day which you would have if you had a olive message on the bottom of a brown dry fly any kind on the top you were a snag on some four and five pounders my friend yes you got to come back out here again and try to get a hold of me

    Dream stream isnt worth it anymore. While it produces the biggest fish consistently there is no point in going as it gets 2 as much pressure then any other river in the state. Way more then cheeseman even. Those rises you were getting were shortstrikes which is super common up there. The fish are so fly educated its insane

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah man, it seemed tough, but I actually had 2 other fish on with my nymph, only one brought in though. 1st fish jumped and flung right off. Small one. Another one was a good sized and took me into a sunken tree. LOL But yeah, dry fly seemed tough...

    If you are ever in the golden/Denver metro area would you be interested in doing a collaboration? I know I definitely am not as large of a channel but I would love it if you could! But if not that’s ok too.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah man, let’s look into it. Not sure when I can make a trip out but I’ll try and let ya know if I do. Sorry sometimes when I go it’s last minute and hard to plan. Also if your ever down here hit me up. Can’t promise I’ll be able to go, but if I can we should!

      Yeah ok unfortunately I don’t have Instagram my parents only allow me to have fishbrain as my social media and TH-cam of course but I could PM you on FishBrain

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure man. But just so you know, if your under 18, Its probably not a good idea for us to meet up and fish. Obviously Im trying to protect both you and myself. Also for your sake, you can never be too careful with people online, I wouldn't meet anyone from online until you turn at least 18 and still be careful at that point. However yeah, I am really not on fish brain too often. Only when im looking for a new place to fish. I just don't have the time to actively use that app along with my 60+ hours a week uploading to youtube, and also instagram, and my full time job that is also 40+ hours a week. HAHA. Just not enough time in the day to check that app.

    • @FlyCastingColorado
      @FlyCastingColorado 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I totally get it there are times when I don’t have time for it either and my only job is school chores and TH-cam. I definitely understand the whole under 18 thing I can tell you if we did do any sort of collaboration my parents would be there for sure. I have watched a TON of your vids and I’ve seen what you do and how you really filter your content and look out for the younger generations but I still would never go online to any old person and offer to meet up and fish cause I might be a teenage serial killer...maybe. But my parents would definitely be there and I have showed them a lot of your videos and I guarantee they would never let me fish with anyone on the internet unless they were there with me and they saw enough of them to feel comfortable. Plus with both of our lives and having pretty much the whole state of Colorado between us our meet up (if any) may not be for a while, especially cause I can’t drive lol.

      @TheDejakal 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't, actually. I'm excited about Friday now. I'm still a beginner who buys flies based on the suggestions at my local fly shop. Though, tying is something I dabbled in when I was a kid.

    • @garrettbauer6699
      @garrettbauer6699 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a regular buck tail on a jig head but Maybe throw in something a little extra so it’s not so plain, I know this isn’t an actual fly but would be cool to see what you can come up with.
