Curtiss Wright CW-19R - Engine Start & Prop Test

  • Recently I took the Curtiss Wright CW-19R out for a start up. We had been having trouble with the two position prop not functioning properly. Jack McCloy, my maintenance guy, worked on it and believes he has the issue sorted out. We’re going to start her up, put the prop through it’s motions, and see if Jack found the remedy. If so, we’ve taken a big step forward to it flying again soon. Check it out!

EXPERT PILOT and crew is the only take away I have from this ... in Awe. This plane defies the rule 'if it looks right it will fly right' - one of a few 30s anomalies that needed an expert pilot like the CBees ...

The man has a multitude (understated) of aircraft. He obviously showed up to do a benign engine/prop test without his own requisite level of pre-flight familiarization. He relied on his experts and to his credit asked. I’d like to suggest that it is quite remarkable indeed that this gentleman has mastered the flight characteristics, let alone the systems of such a broad spectrum of airframes. He is a walking talking old pilot whose boldness, within so many airframes, has not exceeded that proverbial envelope. He obviously maintains a high level of respect for not exceeding that envelope and so has my admiration.

..something I would like to add to the kudos on these videos, is that Kermit has it figured out/the right equipment, or whatever it is, to shoot them without the props stopping, spinning backward, bending, and all those other annoying visual effects that appear on a lot of airplane videos when the engine is running..I know it has something to do with frame speed or something, anyway, it drives me nuts to watch videos where they do that...thanks for going to the trouble to take care of that issue, Kermit!.. :)

I sense a touch of the obsessive personality that's required in a good pilot: even though this is a ground run, the altimeter is carefully zeroed for the barometric pressure of the day! Such a lovely little aircraft, full of Art Deco charm, thank you for sharing this with us, Kermit.

Quite the rare bird with an unusual history. It was actually pretty advanced for the mid-30s, but was originally developed for the civilian market (with tandem seating). But few orders came in so Curtiss redesigned it for military use. They sold a few here and there but not in any numbers worth maintaining production. I can't imagine that Whirlwind engine was considered suitable for a warbird of the late 30s/early 40s.
What's interesting is that this design formed the basis of the Curtiss CW-21 export fighter, which saw action in the Pacific theater. That plane resembles another plane in Kermit's collection -- the CAC Boomerang.

What a great channel, you have all the coolest toys; and this is a gorgeous example! Thanks for keeping aviation heritage alive and flying! Hey, a suggestion for your flap control if you want a visual reference inside the cockpit for the current setting - you could paint an index mark above the chain and then paint various links on the chain that correspond to various flap settings so you wouldn't have to set them just by feel alone. Might be moving to the Orlando area next year, definitely want to stop by and say hello! Cheers, R Shaw

It still looks like the typical Hamilton can on the front that uses engine oil pressure to modify the pitch and it also looks like it has the fly-weights that do the actual rotating of internal blade gears. I saw the can move back when you moved the pitch lever. Absolutely love those gear leg pants. So . . am I right, instead of a 'constant speed' ALWAYS allowing the engine speed and resultant oil pressure to move the can, the pitch lever just opens a valve to make an either/or situtation.
