    They knew that they wanted it live and were not “wild men” like their contemporaries. Just watch the anthology, the uncut version, and they all say the same thing - that they couldn’t do music when they were loaded.

    If you watch the Beatles performance at shea stadium John Lennon is no doubt on something very potent. In fact years later during the anthology recordings and interviews George Harrison said I am not sure what John was on during the shea stadium performance but he was surely on something because he went mad at several points during the night.

    A reason may be individual capacity. I think they also had a healthy fear to begin with. John was lucky, with the big H. And seeing your fellow musicians die may have helped. Plus it doesn't seem if alcohol was a big part.

    • @thecharlesbliss
      @thecharlesbliss  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Peter. Yes it does seem like their Northern constitution may have played a part! It seems like they got over drinking alcohol for the most part when they were turned on to marijuana, although John famously drank a lot during his "Lost Weekend" in the 1970s, which was probably his most self-destructive period - and there are interviews with him after that time when he admits he was surprised he didn't die because he was so out of his mind and even jumped out of a moving car once! ✌️

    I don't have a fear of death. I have a fear of dying. Who remembers the billions of years of history before the moment you were born? No-one, because you were "dead" the whole time. You didn't exist then, just like you won't when you die. It's no big deal; death is just like birth in reverse. My fear of dying involves all the usual fears about not making a mess, but, as a songwriter, I also worry that I'm going to have the most incredible idea for a song and then croak. x

    • @thecharlesbliss
      @thecharlesbliss  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Stephen ✌️ It's an important distinction. I always think of the Woody Allen quote: "I'm not afraid to die, I just don't want to be there when it happens."

    • @65TossTrap
      @65TossTrap ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's an interesting point. My personal view, which is based upon the express teachings of Lord Jesus, is that life really begins in death. There are many who claim that death is a "non-existence" but all the teachings of God and the prophets say otherwise.

    • @thecharlesbliss
      @thecharlesbliss  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@65TossTrap I'm very interested in these perspectives from the world's religions, prophets and mystics - and the idea that perhaps consciousness is not restricted to the physical body. John Lennon once said: “I'm not afraid of death because I don't believe in it. It's just getting out of one car and into another.” Research studies are showing that the psychedelic experience can catalyse these mystical states, where terminally-ill cancer patients have a realisation that their life somehow continues after death. If you're interested in The Beatles and religion, I would recommend The Gospel According to The Beatles by Steve Turner, which I will be making a video on in the future ✌

    Charles, this video is my first exposure to your work. I was wondering what type of literature you go in for. Given that you declare "death" (or human mortality) as one of your major preoccupations, I was wondering if you'd read any of the following works: Schopenhauer's "On the Sufferings of the World," Freud's "Civilization and its Discontents," and, especially, Becker's "The Denial of Death."

    • @thecharlesbliss
      @thecharlesbliss  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching, Jeff! At the moment my research for the book is focused on Beatles literature, psychedelic literature and death studies - and philosophy will be a big part of it, including William James. Schopenhauer has a wonderful essay called 'On an Apparent Intention in the Fate of the Individual', which argues that as you look back over your lifetime, it can appear to have a structure and plan, as if it were composed by a novelist. I am a fan of Freud and Jung, but haven't read the Becker book you mentioned, so will check it out. Thanks for the recommendation! ✌️

      Hey Scott. Thanks for your comment. I'm not aware of a time when they took so much of anything that they had to seek medical help, for example. Although there is the famous Two Junkies interview with Lennon and Yoko during the Get Back sessions, which John interrupts by being sick. Probably an indication that he was "abusing his body", as he later admitted as you can see in Peter Jackson's documentary, although the interview is not actually seen in Get Back.

    why was Paul in 1967 looked so thin?
    I heard he used cocaine to endure the massive workload he did.
    Honest question. I must be mislead and ignorant about drug use.

    • @thecharlesbliss
      @thecharlesbliss  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey César. I'm not sure about his weight in 1967 - but he was using cocaine around the time they were recording Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, although he said he got tired of it quite quickly because of its short-lasting effects. He tells one story of going to the "check out the toilets" in a London club and running into Jimi Hendrix, but before he returned to his table the effects of the cocaine had already worn off. Paul, since 1965, has always been more of a cannabis guy, and although he tried various drugs, that's the one that he took regularly. If you're interested in this, I would recommend Riding So High: The Beatles and Drugs by Joe Goodden, which is a fantastic book that I'll be doing a video on soon ✌️

      @@Kieop There's an interesting bootleg called 'A Toot and a Snore in 1974', which was the last time that Lennon and McCartney are thought to have played together in which you can hear Lennon asking Stevie Wonder if he wants a line of cocaine: "You wanna snort, Steve? A toot? It's goin' round." I wonder if McCartney was also on it during that session.

    • @Kieop
      @Kieop ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thecharlesbliss We can only speculate (though I would vote yes, since Paul hadn't seen John in a long time and would want to fit in). However, since the session was being recorded, he may have declined, since he didn't like playing high. But again, it was John's session, so who knows? Ironically, that bootleg was available on TH-cam (perhaps still is on a different page), but as I was going through my reply inbox today, someone had replied to a post of mine on that video, but when I went to reply to them, the video was no longer available, so it was VERY recently taken down.
