  • To honor the memory of original Chicago guitarist Terry Kath on what would have been his 71st birthday, Keith Howland, who has been with the band more than 20 years, used his James Tyler Studio Elite plugged into a Fractal Audio AX-8 to play some of "Poem 58,” from the band’s debut album, when it was called Chicago Transit Authority.
Keep up with Keith at www.chicagotheb...

Keith has filled that roll better than anyone else after Terry's demise. I love it when Keith is soloing during a concert and throws in some direct quotes from Terry's original solo. Very classy and respectful. Thank you, Keith.

Great job Keith. You sound more like Terry than anyone I have ever heard. I used to try to learn Terry's licks off the records years ago when I was a kid, but gave up because he was so much better than me.

Thanks for that, Keith. Terry was one of a kind....Loved his playing....raw and beautiful. He wasn't constructed like the rest of us...the music flowed through him. Great seeing you guys in Tucson last month (7/28/19) backstage. Great to mingle with three original members as well. Keep it going.

"Um ok... it's like that, is it?" This excellent guitarist said that to me as I was rehearsal room jamming as he strapped on his axe. He was like, "Alright, take some of this" and ripped into some of that flowing jazz stuff like you got. I'm at 1:36, loving that stuff that we get to groove on as being into music. Ok, I'm going back, listening to the rest. My jaw dropped as a kid first time I heard the full 25 or 6 to 4, not the single. That stands the test of time. Jeez, I love guitar. Peace

Terry and Keith are my number ones ! For sure Chris Pinnik a great player, Dawaine Bailey, Donnie Dacus all where good, but Keith for me did the best you can do. He never copied Terry, he ever sounded like him, by listening to the original recording, capturing the feel, the sound , the energy , he sailed along what Terry did with so much respect, by never loosing his own identity. The most difficult to do, but he did it with excellence. (sorry for writing mistakes) Keith, love to hear a solo album of you. Cheeers from germany. Saw you in Hamburg Germany 2011 - Ron

Love it! The best thing about this vid is that it lets us fans of the old Chicago style know that the current band members haven’t forgotten the blistering rock strains of the formative years. Will Chicago actually play this classic when they tour with The Doobie Brothers? Better yet, how bout create new stuff from this mold.

I love Keith Howland. But why in the world didn't you start the video before the start of his playing? The beginning is excellent, lone strumming before the drums cascade in.
And why in the world do you keep feezing the picture? You're a guitar site -- you don't think your viewers want to watch an expert, you know, *playing his guitar*? Or if it's because of the images of Terry Kath...your readers don't know Kath?
    I wish you'd reconsider and re-upload.

Chicago isn’t the same band it was when you were the main guitar player. They are still a good band, but when you, Jason, Lou and Tris exited, it’s just lost some of its guts. Losing Bill sucked too. He was awesome. Hope you are doing well, Keith!

Terry may have never played the same thing twice. Nice, nice description of a real innovator. But I do think that he did repeat himself on occasion (though maybe not an exact repeat).
I first saw Chicago in August, 1969, at the Texas International Festival, where they were scheduled to open on days 1 and 2. On day 1, one of the brass section was ill, so they had a guy from the Local fill in. Set him up with the sheet music, they did. Everything that day sounded just like the album. Day 2 their guy was back, and they just wailed. Completely different show.

Hate to say it but Howland is maybe just a little above average in terms of professional guitar players. Chicago could’ve and should’ve chosen someone with a technique all their own. Not to try and replace Kath which is impossible, but surely there was somebody out there that was a better fit than this guy.
