I won the PU, got through the war of the roses and then my new ruler died really early and I lost the PU. My game luckily "crashed" right after that and it didn't save that

Another strategy would be to annex France, move capital to Paris, culture shift to French and then become France but with all the English land. A master plan to get around England waterwall.

The thing that drives me crazy as playing England is in the start you have a bad king so your always behind technology

At least if you do get the war of the roses, you can pick a good king from 2 options.

This works. Needed to start about 5 times for a good constellation, but then I did it first try. I'm currently integrating France, which takes more than a century.

actually wrong I saw england conquer france a lot even if they dont manage union... currently they are much better at naval combat + they handling their troops better that they can actually win
My first iron man game was as England, it started off with me getting a P.U. over Castile right before the "Surrender of Maine". My Spanish troops beat the French back from the south while I whipped them around in the north. It was also after the event that gives Castile Aragon and Naples. That was probably the best game I will ever play, I got India before the end of the game and had total control over the spice trade. Best feeling was when I integrated all my PUs. I had more development then the Ming
the great thing about starting a game as england is the vast amount of different strategies you can pick,my game i no cb granada so i had land next to portugal for claims,wiped out all the colonizers and had all the new world for myself :),my personal favourate run though was releasing wales and playing as them and taking england apart,that was glorious :)

You can release Maine as a vassal
1. Levy the troops by exploiting development, merc to force limit
2. Complete levy the troops mission
3. Disband mercs, declare on Scotland using subjugation CB
4. Peace out France, give them* Normandy(not like you wanted land in mainland eu)
5. Conquer Ireland
6. Rush colonize, dont go inland just take coasts to have north america as all yours
7. Colonies will make you the #1 GP

I once had a very good start where i was able to pu france by force and after that i had a lucky pu on austria. 100 hundred years later after having integrated france and owning all of the low countries i had yet another lucky pu but on a big, blobby commonwealth
lol I just recently played an UK game just after the new expansion came out. It's 1697 I have 490+ income a month, all of France integrated, the new world is mine, India is falling as well. I have twice the deve of Ming, twice their income, and have an army of equal size. I am the 1st power and it feels fucking wonderful.
It was all going well but no one told me about the wave of 25k Scottish troops who walked the entire way through England and sat on London

The first time ( and only time) I won the war with France I lost the PU because of the War of the Roses...

Just started an England run last week. Surrender of Maine event fires. A few months into the war and I get a PU over Boheima. Wins succession war against Poland and the war against France draws to a close. Castile gets PU over Portugal. So now Castile and I are the only ones colonizing.
Well. That should be... interesting.
In my game, I was lucky enough to get a union with Castille through royal marriage right after I white peace'd the first war for Maine. By the second war, I also had France in my union. So before 1500, I had three kingdoms under my ruler and my dominance in Europe was indisputable... Until my king died and France left the union. In which case I had to have a third unification war to AGAIN bring them into the fold. But even with 3 superpowers and a few allies, people still didn't get the idea and formed coalition after coalition, launching many punitive wars.
Oh! I didn't know you had to use mercenaries! It's good to know now. :3

As a man who plays as England quite often, I must strongly oppose your strategy. Here's what you should've done:
1. Allies -> Castille, Burgundy, Austria (Portugal is a bonus for defensive wars, but not necessary since they rarely want to join your offensive wars).
2. Do NOT destroy your mainland forts because there's a fairly strong chance that you'll be fighting both Scotland and France at the same time.
3. Peacefully vassalize as many Irish minors as you can (usually one or two). They provide some extra troops and you'll be feeding them the rest of Ireland later.
4. Avoid a war with France early on, *AT ALL COSTS*, until you deal with the War of the Roses. Don't be afraid to surrender Maine or cede land if you have to.
5. After you've stabilized your country, you should conquer the rest of Ireland and prepare to attack the French with your allies on your own terms. Preferably before they get their "Élan!" idea.
That way, you must fight several wars and AE, this way you get them in a PU within a few years.
TheSocialStreamers Nope, I only had to fight two wars and that's only because I didn't want to go for the PU the first time.
If France gets Scotland as an ally, I would keep the forts so you lose less warscore from Scottish occupation.
Reminds me of the day I won the 100 years war and the fucking Yorks had to ruin it for me by breaking my union with their 5/4 /6 as my consolation prize

Tried doing this a couple of times, allied burgundy, aragon and castille and they all joined the war, and the only allies france had were savoy and provence.
But because france is stupidly overpowered, it managed to siege down all of burgundy, whilst winning battles against me and sieging down iberia aswell. I ended up losing, didn't help that I didn't get an heir either.

Cool video, this opening is sadly why I don't play England. If you take the PU the game becomes to easy, if you don't you will have missed a lot.

Aragon is the only one that might join - restart until they have made French provinces provinces of interest.

Allot of it is situational/random in terms of how the game initialises. It really comes down to just being able to manipulate allies and take advantage of every opportunity you get e.g. declaring war on France when they're already in a war and then repeating this process gradually until you've swallowed up France. Or getting brought into a war against Spain by Aragon where France is bought in by Spain allowing you to grab a bit more of France etc. The last game I played I managed to do it with Savoy and Aragon as allies although I was in and out of alliances with Brittany and others.
As England, you can take the isolationist approach by withdrawing from the continent and play the easy game but the problem you'll have is that you'll be weak later on in the game with things like man power and the modifiers like tradition/tactics when facing the top 3. If you want to dominate as England you don't really have much of a choice other than to engage on the continent.
The best advice I could give someone is simply to practice and learn how to work with allies.
Edit: If you are going to go for the world conquer game and engage on Europe then it's imperative that you focus on military tech for the first couple of centuries to stay ahead or at least keep up with your rivals. This may sound obvious but a common mistake people make is in underestimating the modifier bonus you get with each tech level.

You must be getting really unlucky then, because I had to test this out several times and Aragon was hostile to France most times.

or play my rule the waves mod, sell all land in europe. take over all of GB and ireland and then every island on earth.

I'm really disappointed that ever since the newest patches with Rule Britannia the provinces changed so France has even more to work with plus another fort to block your way to Paris. Someone on the dev team sucks a lot of French baguettes if you know what I mean.

build to force limit and expand into Brittany and Ireland. It might be easier without cossacs, because you can call in austria and castile, but you wont get estates, which are awesome.
TL;DR restart until you can ally either burgundy, Aragon, or both to attack france with and just not give them land.

If this worked before I don't think it does now. I've tried several times and my allies never join the war and often scotland does and just invades while i'm messing around in france
I defeated France by taking a ton of loans. After I won I decided to demand money as well as a personal union from france. After this I got a coalition against me as well as a war shortly after. Did demanding money increase the aggressive expansion?

1. Disband all forts in France
2. DOW scotland and all cap it
3. After 5 years take 100% in war score, including land in france, if you can ninja land your army while scotland is at 100%
4. Rinse and Repeat until all your enemies are dead.
That won't allow you to get the PU on France though, which is gives you a huge step up on your rivals.
It will, just do it when france has been weakened, having their army stand in one spot while waiting for the scottish to reach 100% usually wastes it's manpower pretty well

This seems to be an old guide. Before I saw this guide, I tried to win as England many times. Every time, Burgundy rivals you.
I finally made a successful strategy, however, and it doesn't even need RNG.(in my experience) Ally Aragon, Castile, and Austria, and don't take a mission. All the while, ally, guarantee, and royal marriage 1 or 2 Irish minors plus improve relations, the goal being to vassal them. Delete the fort in Marches, build up to force limit, and when the surrender of Maine happens, move your 35 stack onto Paris, and take the mission that appears to occupy Paris, which gives claims on most of northern France. After Paris falls, focus on seiging forts, only engaging in battle when your allies start it, unless the French come to you.
And if Scotland allies France? Restart?

The Surrender of Maine event allows you to either cede Maine or attack France with the "Force PU" Casus Belli.

What are the odds on Burgundy not rivaling you? Last England game I played burgundy was a persistent prick.
Out of eight games I tested, only two had them not rival me, so it is a long shot, though you can also win the war with England.

TheSocialStreamers I think I'll just reroll for a favourable start ally wise and do as advised with mercs marrying anything humanoid in sight. I've won the war before but I play only eu4 for a fortnight and then don't play it for months and there's a new dlc/patch or 3 and I just have a "oh fuck I'm completely lost.....is.. is this a tomato?" moment looking at the HRE.

It's annoying how it says that this is a tutorial for 'EU4' and actually is a tutorial for 'EU4 + DLC'
Remember the DLCs are optional and therefore not actually part of the actual game, just extra things you can add to enhance the gameplay. I'm too poor to buy them (until my channel somehow blows up)

@@TheSocialStreamers far easier to just release a French vassel to give them maine to avoid the event ally Austria arragon castile get the mission to subjugate scotland declate war just using favours rather than promise of territory your allys should seige Paris and give it to you and that unlocks the mission to pu France humiliate them for the age goal then wait for the truce to expire and call your allays in again to murder Frances troops, doing it this way is a lot less costly and since you have Scotland as a vassel you can form gb come tech 10, not sure if the missions were in the game when you did the video tbf
