2017 IRON CITY CLASSIC - throwback paintball event - Old School!

- On July 29-30th, 2017 Urban Assault Paintball in Pittsburgh, PA hosted the inaugural Iron City Classic 10-man tournament. The former host facility of the NPPL from the mid 1990’s to the early 2000’s, Urban Assault allowed teams to get the full "classic" experience by pitting teams against each other in the woods, on the Hyperball field and on the notorious mounds field.
The event was organized by Tim Montressor of Tampa Bay Damage and was created with the goal of incorporating as many players from various age groups into a highly competitive tournament. The 10-man format was the dominant game in tournament paintball from the late 80’s until the early 2000’s. Recently, it has made a comeback with numerous events occurring around the USA and an ever-growing division in the NXL. Montressor has confirmed that the Iron City Classic will be an annual event and 2018’s tournament has already garnered quite a bit of interest.

I used to play tournaments. I had an automag and a budd orr autococker.So much has changed. There are so many new guns that I never heard of. I wonder if they make a new automag and if so I wonder if they are still the best

Doubt it’ll ever be like that. Feel like paintball killed their own sport. Ramping and what not really strays the casual people away. No one want to rent a tippman98 and go against someone with a Luxe, barely pulling the trigger shooting 10+ bps

This is what made me love paintball this style of play has something that speed ball just can't replicate for me. Seeing this made me even more happy to come out of my long paintball hiatus.

Organize a local day and get some old ballers out to play!
Still a lot of us left my man. I made my son learn on a pump when he started playing. Some young thundercat started talking trash about pumps. I busted out my Tippmann SL68 pump that I got when I first started playing in the 8th grade (I’m 43 now). Complete with the OG anti siphon tank and neoprene cover on the 40rd loader. I stitched them young bucks with luxe’s and ego’s all day with that piece of shit. I have high end guns, but my free flow cocker has killed more chumps than AIDS. Still my favorite blaster.
Its a beautiful thing to see how far paintball has come, yet it never forgets its roots and brings out that special spark we all feel when we see and hear the history played out. Time to get a marker and head back to the feild.

Had a visceral reaction to this video. Played from '99 to '09 all over NE Canada & USA + Europe; woodsball, hyperball, speedball, etc. 10-man, 7-man, 5-man. NPPL, NXL, MXL, etc. Then work, life and family took charge. Started with pumps, then mechs, then electros. This, however, is bloody cool! Nostalgic. Bravo. That looney moment @3:13 just before the break and ripping down the middle identifies me.
Everything about this video is great. This is what competition paintball needs to be again. Thank Pbn for making this video and it's got the gears rolling in my head for my local fields.

I grew up playing on the SC Hyperball fields back around 2002-2006ish. You can be so creative on hyper-ball fields they are a ton of fun. That field looks awesome too in that grass ooohhh man looks so fun! Shout-out to all the OG Streetball warriors !

This was either mechanical OR electronic set at 5.5 bps. That way everyone could play.
This is absolutely awesome. Really inspiring film and I agree this type of paintball seems more accessible to casual players and I hope they continue to do events like this.

Cool to see 10-man and mechanical play get some attention. Would love to attend some of these events that are popping up that are focusing on stuff from the 90's and early 2000's era.
Representing Pittsburgh! Urban Assault was the first field I ever played at for my 12th birthday party (2002). Hooked ever since. Just came back from a 5 year hiatus as well. I love this game!

I've never been pro, but I used to play quite a bit at that old Greensburg Smart Parts field. Entered and placed in a coupe amateur tourneys

grew up playing and reffing at the extreme rage field in FL back in the late 90s and early 2000s. watching this reminded me so much of those days!!!! I miss paintball!!!!!!!
That was awesome. I love all types of paintball, but the old school ten man game of the mid 90's into the early 2000's was the best. Loved that a bunch of those old school players were rocking their old school 'cockers and 'mags.
And it's nice to see that there is still an interest in those guns and that type of game.
For the tournament promoters out there...."If you build it, they will come."

This is EXACTLY what paintball needs, a return to the roots 10 man , it's easier to follow and a lot of great potential to show new audiences it's not all tight spaces ,ramping and over before the uninitiated can figure out what just happened.

If been waiting for an edit of this event, it looked awesome looked like allot of fun. I'll never forget the first speed ball field me and my friends built using old plastics barrels and trash cans. such a good time.
I am not going to say this all un real. Best playing I have seen since 2007 I am sure that hands down this playing is with the old California and what balling meant Tobe. I actually believe ironmen perfected this or dynasty lived it. I am young baller 90s kids, but the vibe I see in these individuals is the original even the music fit, that persona one can present to your buddy's and fellow baller. Much love I do send my return in my regards.
I miss hyperball fields, remember my first time jumping in with a team during their practice aha. The sound of paint breaking on that plastic pipe was thrilling

I started playing in the early 00's and what I really miss today is secret layouts. Also playing on more than one layout at tournaments. You had to be able to play more as a team and prepare in a different way.
With different companies making awesome Autocockers and Planet Eclipse release the GMek, there is more and more love for mechanical (and pump) play than we've seen in recent years. Let's keep this push going.

I had a bunch of different cheap guns until I eventually got an automag.My brother, father and I all had automags with every Smart Parts accessory available. We all started with the barrel, but had to have the other pieces to match. All three were identically built and each one was a different color except that I don't think my dad liked using the gas through stock and remote air system so his did not have a stock. I miss those days so bad sometimes. I have started looking at the new guns but I feel overwhelmed because so much has changed.

This was amazing!!! Haven't played in over 10 years, and have recently been kicking around the idea of starting again. I love seeing the mechanical markers out there, especially the Autocockers. Screw buying new markers, I'm busting the Pro Stocks out of the closet!
Emt5691 I just did this same thing. I haven't played for over 10 years and went with my son last week. I broke out the free flow mini cocker and shocker 4x4.. Had a ton of comments.

To the organizers, Please please please come to Badlandz! This reminds me of high school, going and watching the pros back in 03-04-05. I would LOVE a chance to watch or even play against the guys I grew up admiring.

wow! Thanks for the video and hope to see one every year. I've been hearing of this Iron City classic often and good to see many old guys playing again. I remember the old videos of the mounds field pre-7man and always wanted to play on that then and still now. Mayyybe one day ;p Anyways, this got me way more excited for the 10 man classic my local field will be having in July. 5.5bps limit for electro guns so will be fun. 8)

Smart Parts , greed, lawsuits , insane ramping , and the financial crash of 08 almost killed the sport.
Tournies like this which are approachable and awesome to the general audience can bring more new players back to paintball .
And here's hoping for small Co.'s like inception , Niche ,Palmer's , CCM , Pinokio and others to fuel this style of paintball back to a new golden age.

This is a hybrid where it was woodsball players playing concept fields. But there was a woodsball field too at the tournament.
