I find myself really liking Emma all of a sudden. She’s not ashamed to possibly look less than awesome in a good cause. In the process, she looks more awesome than ever. Now I’m going to have to donate. No way I can turn down a plea like that. Honestly, this is the best sponsorship request for a charity event I can ever recall seeing.
I loved your comment at the end about never thinking about carrying capacity. To that I say, welcome to us cycling commuters. It takes an amazing rider to push that bike in that gearing up ANY hill. I would be pushing it all the way up. Keep up the great work at GCN!
Emma, what a fantastic challenge. I am sure that you will get through it with your usual good style and grace. What a great cause to be raising funds for and I hope that your bike has a tonne of oranges on the back, such a great bike which can do a lot of good. I did love how you tried to go through a typical GCN bike review... think that I know which is more of a practical bike.. buffalo wins every time! Great riding Emma and good luck on the ride. Very much look forward to seeing all the riders faces when you go past them riding that!!!
Emma, you're a class act. So happy to see GCN broadening its scope and addressing real challenges in the world that have a cycling angle. Not surprised to see Emma leading the charge. Love everything you bring to the channel. Keep up the good work! P.S. would love to see GCN tackle more topics like bike share, electric bikes as a legitimate alternative to personal autos, protected bike lanes, and cycle/ped friendly urban planning and renewal!
The bicycle equivalent of having a formula 1 driver race a produce truck ( green grocer lorry) in a local event. Glad to see a top tier rider have a bit of humility and be willing to ride at mere mortal speed to prove cycling isn't always about speed, it's about getting to ride. Great video!
I was so sorry to see Matt leave GCN but in Emma you have absolutely the best presenter. I've sponsored but please add the link to this page so that others can easily get to the page to contribute, if not for the cause, for Emma. Personal request can we have Emma do a video on Duathlons!!!
It has a coaster brake as well as the caliper. I would not rely on the front wheel caliper brake. The caliper material looks like the standard low end flat press which flexes and is likely to shudder under moderate to heavy application.
Cyclesteffer so you can adjust the handlebar height for a wide variety of riders. These are ridden by everyone from young children to adults and only come in one size.
A few mods would be okay, Emma, particularly a Shimano Nexus hub. And thanks for doing this ride and promoting this cause. I will pitch in and cheer for you. And in fashion news, I like your new shades.
Great challenge and a great bike too. I love the simplicity of single speeds. I have one also with a coaster brake. It looks so nice and clean. Perfect for short trips that I’d prefer not to walk.
That makes some sense. Maybe I am dense but it would seam easier to build, cheaper, and more structurally sound to just continue the top tube straight to a lower point on the seat tube.
The only down side I can see to "continue[ing] the top tube straight to a lower point" is the top tube wouldn't line up with the seat stays so the top tube itself might be stronger if it was straight but you would lose half the triangle on 6" or so of the seat post and that's where the 100kg rated rack attaches. Alot of HT MTB's do the same thing www.onyerbike.co.uk/image/cache/catalog/diamondback_2017/db%20heist%200.0-1200x800.jpg
chris1275cc yep and the top tube also need to line up with the rack mount points if you are planning to carry up to 100kgs in the rack. These things get used to carry three full milk churns so need to be incredibly strong.
Actually the bent cross-bar ("top tube" to all you kids ) is great for carrying sacks while pushing the bike too. I like the back pedal hub brake. Guaranteed the front brake will be broken within a few weeks so the internal long lasting rear brake is doubly important where even replacing brake blocks is beyond the budget of some. Down side is you can't brake while pushing (or being pulled more like) a heavy load such as those sacks downhill. Good luck on your ride Emma! I hope many lives are improved by access to a good bike through your efforts!
I tried to donate, but couldn't find an option on the Canadian Website to credit Emma and her ride. I would hate for her not to have to carry my orange..... Any suggestions?
You forgot to mention how did you manage to bend that front fender. It is not bent in all of the scenes. I don't like the design, I like the idea, but I think there is room for much improvement. First sensible bike portrayed in GCN, nevertheless :)
Definitely going to keep an eye out for you on route. Pack a bungy cord and I'll help tow up Leith and Box Hills (If I'm not dying myself by then). Excellent cause.
The buffalo bike probably makes a good home trainer with that steel enter stand and I think that Emma would probably win (our hearts) with that bike!!! Good luck Emma!!!. Update: why not change the gear ratio?
The bicycle sharing needs have been grossly overestimated in China. There are possibly millions of bikes wasting away in their junk yards that could be for Africa. The Guardian states, "Shanghai currently has 1.5 million shared bikes on the streets, and despite its population being three times greater than London, that number far outstrips the 11,000 Santander Cycles peppered throughout the UK capital."
That's how socialism works; instead of letting the market forces reveal how much the people want to make use of something the government tries to build enough of a good thing that everyone has access to it whether they need it or not.
Is this the last video on GCN about World Bike Relief? I have just donated and was wondering if GCN had covered their 500k goal, but was surprised to see no new videos on the topic at all.
so how many other people didn't feel so bad when they saw Emma struggle up that hill ?? I'll do the old fashioned sponsorship 50p per mile.. good luck lass
Box Hill is not a proper hill. And, with those words, Emma shatters the TdF illusions of thousands of Surrey-based mamils 🤣🤣🤣
I find myself really liking Emma all of a sudden. She’s not ashamed to possibly look less than awesome in a good cause. In the process, she looks more awesome than ever.
Now I’m going to have to donate. No way I can turn down a plea like that. Honestly, this is the best sponsorship request for a charity event I can ever recall seeing.
fundraiseuk.worldbicyclerelief.org/emma-pooley - thanks Brian!
Bicycles make the world a better place!
They sure do!
E M, you bet your arse they do! Be safe out there.
Emma struggling up the climb on this bike is how us mere mortals climb everyday of the week on super light weigh bikes.
My legs are screaming from just watching you climb...
I loved your comment at the end about never thinking about carrying capacity. To that I say, welcome to us cycling commuters. It takes an amazing rider to push that bike in that gearing up ANY hill. I would be pushing it all the way up. Keep up the great work at GCN!
Emma u are amazing!
That crooked front fender is driving me crazy.
Emma, what a fantastic challenge. I am sure that you will get through it with your usual good style and grace. What a great cause to be raising funds for and I hope that your bike has a tonne of oranges on the back, such a great bike which can do a lot of good. Very much look forward to seeing all the riders faces when you go past them riding that!!!
Thanks John, it sure is a fantastic challenge for a very worthy cause. Stay tuned to see how Emma gets on.

Hi AlwaysAlpha, thanks. We can't wait to see how Emma gets on. Nice ideas, we will see what we can do!
Carries 100kg! Can I advise to take the reflectors off to save 10g. Every little helps 😉
SAF1981 sdont forget about the bell and badge as they weight a few hairs and a meal and removing them will reduce drag
Good stuff GCN.
Thank you Emma for this video.
World Bicycle Relief.
A bike could change a life.
Donate guys...
Thanks Andrea. They sure can make a huge difference to people's lives. We can't wait to see Emma take on this awesome challenge!
Me too!!!
Emma can do that, I'm sure!! She will be fantastic, as usual.
#c'monemma
'Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race.'
H. G. Wells
Thanks Emma :)
Emma is a splendid addition to the GCN crew. Small package, plenty of heart.
I'm a teacher myself... and that rise in attendance and academic.. is remarkable! Well done
Emma, you are the BEST!!!
Thanks Josh 👊
This is a magnificent video about the power of the bike and the fortitude of its presenter. Brilliant stuff.
Emma is my favourite sports person. I have a serious case of hero worship.
@6:17 Emma tries to move the pedal back up to level, feels resistance and looks down to remember that coaster brake don't play like that.
oooh I would have forgotten too lol 💀
Emma will come to GCN challenge more fit then ever in her career!
I love this. :) Thank you for working to raise money for this charity.
Hey GCN.....put together a team to support her
It seems like Emma has always been a GCN member already. She really came into her own very quickly.
Cheers Cliff
Upping your visuals with that man with the scythe and that bidon hanging from his belt at 0:30. Kudos.
Great piece Emma. You’re a brilliant addition to GCN. Good luck on the Buffalo bike 😀
I love the challenge and the idea behind it!
love you Emma! awesome video! wbr is fantastic!
I was so sorry to see Matt leave GCN but in Emma you have absolutely the best presenter. I've sponsored but please add the link to this page so that others can easily get to the page to contribute, if not for the cause, for Emma.
Personal request can we have Emma do a video on Duathlons!!!
Thanks Chris for donating. Nice idea, maybe one for the future!
This is awesome Emma. Kudos to you for doing it!
Sherlyn Paterson Thanks! Stay tuned to see how Emma gets on
Emma, steel frame, flats, single speed, and up a mountain? Emma scores a huge win again!
Stay tuned to see how Emma gets on!
that is bonkers, a sportive on a buffalo bike
All for a great cause!
The gearing looks too high even for its proper use. With larger loads on bumpy dirt roads, does GCN recommend a lower gear for this wonderful bike?
The descents with that one brake! Scary stuff.
Hazmat0 don't touch the rim.... 🔥!
It has a coaster brake as well as the caliper. I would not rely on the front wheel caliper brake. The caliper material looks like the standard low end flat press which flexes and is likely to shudder under moderate to heavy application.
Back pedal rear brake.
The bike is probably heavier than her
it's only 20kg
Great video! Thrilled to know about buffalo bike and the world bike relief.
This is like my cafe bike. Easiest gear is like 70x18. Needless to say, I don't ever ride it to a cafe...
Just put some 24" wheels on and you can push that gear 😀
Matheus Barbosa
J S haha it has drop bars, I will get bullied if I put 24s on 😂
fabi nice! Yeah it's an old Chinese bike that looks like a fixie but has gears with stem shifters. It's old and beat up so I'm trying to fix it up
So carrying a lot of oranges. To get noticed after the 1/2 way point of the race let other rides pick out an orange if they want.
Brilliant, brilliant idea!
I reckon I’ll probably eat all the oranges myself ...
you could do a video on fuelling sportives - pastries v oranges
4:20. The bell! That bell is perfect for the bike vault.
Proud of you Em. Bravo!
so... how did the brake performed on the downhill?
u had me at "bike bell" :) sold
Yay go Emma! You're the best, supporting you 100% :)
Cheers Dan
That was an awesome video, Emma you are great.
You're a legend EMMA!
Awesome. Don't get why it has a quill stem though? Don't those frames cost more to make?
Cyclesteffer so you can adjust the handlebar height for a wide variety of riders. These are ridden by everyone from young children to adults and only come in one size.
I've never seen Emma so out of breath before...that must be a...wildebeest of a bike! 😉😉😉
It sure is pretty heavy!
I think GCN should sponsor a GCN camp and have the hosts sponsor/lead different skills or days. Would be awesome to ride with Emma
A few mods would be okay, Emma, particularly a Shimano Nexus hub. And thanks for doing this ride and promoting this cause. I will pitch in and cheer for you. And in fashion news, I like your new shades.
mad props to Emma for riding a bike that's about 50% of her own weight. That's really impressive :-)
Well done Emma, great cause.
Great challenge and a great bike too. I love the simplicity of single speeds. I have one also with a coaster brake. It looks so nice and clean. Perfect for short trips that I’d prefer not to walk.
Stay tuned to see how Emma gets on in the challenge.
No amount of squatting on the pan will offset the weight of that bike.
Michael McDermott you’re right. Even with an entirely prune based diet that’s a lot of weight to shift.
I’ll stick to oranges
Emma Pooley You're a good egg, Emma. I got your back.
Love Emma’s videos!!x
Thanks Natalie, stay tuned to see how Emma gets on
Go Emma, a great bike that is changing lives.
Cheers Paul
Is the fender rubing the front wheel ?:))
BcA - Biciclind cu Axel yes😂
Good luck Emma! Do your best!
Cheers
This is a brilliant video - can you do a remake for 2024?
Great video Emma, good look on your challenge.👍
Thanks Mark!
the rider maketh the bike
Proof of that here!
Global Cycling Network still looks painful
Great job Emma! I've calculated that if you wear an aero helmet and skin suit on that bike you'll save 0.00067 watts.
@gcntech can you shed some light on the top tube on the buffalo bike? Not sure what the purpose of the bend v an angled top tube #torqueback
That makes some sense. Maybe I am dense but it would seam easier to build, cheaper, and more structurally sound to just continue the top tube straight to a lower point on the seat tube.
The only down side I can see to "continue[ing] the top tube straight to a lower point" is the top tube wouldn't line up with the seat stays so the top tube itself might be stronger if it was straight but you would lose half the triangle on 6" or so of the seat post and that's where the 100kg rated rack attaches. chris1275cc yep and the top tube also need to line up with the rack mount points if you are planning to carry up to 100kgs in the rack. These things get used to carry three full milk churns so need to be incredibly strong.
Shaped like a mtb
Add a dropper post and send it off some jumps
Can you put your own pedals on?
Mad but admirable. Emma you are a star.
Cheers Lon, a great challenge!
Actually the bent cross-bar ("top tube" to all you kids ) is great for carrying sacks while pushing the bike too. I like the back pedal hub brake. Gribbo9999 Thanks, we hope so too.
That's fantastic Emma, I'll keep an eye out for your team as I'm also doing RideLondon :D
Awesome Pixie! Hopefully see you there
I tried to donate, but couldn't find an option on the Canadian Website to credit Emma and her ride. I would hate for her not to have to carry my orange..... Any suggestions?
Ted Gillespie can you donate via the uk site? fundraiseuk.worldbicyclerelief.org/emma-pooley
If not - go via Canada and I’ll take an extra orange for your donation. Thank you! 😘
Thanks Emma - will do.
Also - the GCN Global WBR page is here: worldbicyclerelief.org/en/gcn/&
Hey, whatever happened to Matt and Si riding through London in Speedos?!? Or did I miss that?
Anyway, great cause, great challenge! Good luck Emma!
Good point! #thespeedorideshallnotbeforgotten
Genial video pronto hare una donación
Good luck Emma. Donation made
You forgot to mention how did you manage to bend that front fender. It is not bent in all of the scenes.
I don't like the design, I like the idea, but I think there is room for much improvement.
First sensible bike portrayed in GCN, nevertheless :)
Emma, you wonderful woman you! I've donated and can't wait to see the follow up vid of your experience. I'm sure it will be fab 😁
Thanks for the donation Robert
Built to be as tough as a buffalo 👍. Also built to be tough to race and upslope.. all the best in the race Emma
Cheers, stay tuned to see how Emma gets on
You have already won the GCN Presenter challenge as far as I'm concerned!
slick tyres and some clip on aero bars and it'll be a speed machine, don't sweat it Emma ;)
Ok. How much to get lasty and the whole crew out?
Lincoln Lu they won't make it up the hill xD
Definitely going to keep an eye out for you on route. Pack a bungy cord and I'll help tow up Leith and Box Hills (If I'm not dying myself by then). Excellent cause.
Why a not a thread less stem
No gears , no problem . Nicely done Emma.
Cheers Manuel
Should try cycling that bike at Doi Inthanon and Doi Ang Khang at Chiangrai, Thailand...
Box Hill is nothing, Emma, riding up Leith Hill would be the bigger challenge.
See you there!
Imagine coming over the line and realising Emma has beaten you on 24kg of Buffalo bike! That's going to be a major downer...! ;)
What’s ur avg speed . May be I can cope up with 23 k an hour and we say hello
Great vid!
Donated! 🚲🏜🌐
Thanks!
Awesome, did a charity ride a week ago and met some interesting people, it's a great way to raise money for charity 👍
It sure is!
just donated! i'd say best of luck, emma, but i'm pretty sure you'd beat me on this bike if i was riding my roadie so ... hope you have a great ride
Cheers Kazimir for donating!
is the guy with the scythe emma's granddad or something? Why is he pictured twice in the video?
The buffalo bike probably makes a good home trainer with that steel enter stand and I think that Emma would probably win (our hearts) with that bike!!! Good luck Emma!!!.
Update: why not change the gear ratio?
Thanks, stay tuned to see how Emma gets on
This type of bike is very common in Japan.
We can get these type with 3 speed with under $90.
Link for a just giving page? i'm sure a lot of views would happily sponsor you.
will got to the main site..... watching to the end of the vid often helps.....
fundraiseuk.worldbicyclerelief.org/emma-pooley. Many thanks!
6:00 that backdrop 😍
It's pretty beautiful!
Why no helmets on buffalo bike riders? Are they provided helmets with the bikes?
Necesito una bicicleta como esa porfavor.,..🚴
oranges for emma!
Let me guess: The Chinese bike sharing was something they tried to make happen, instead of it being something they allowed to happen.
disgruntledtoons You missed the grossly overestimated part.
That's how socialism works; instead of letting the market forces reveal how much the people want to make use of something the government tries to build enough of a good thing that everyone has access to it whether they need it or not.
Timothy Fish The US is having the same problem, but because of the even worst.. capitalists..
You are aware that it was private companies building those bikes, right? The rant on socialism looks pretty silly when you realize that.
Is this the last video on GCN about World Bike Relief? I have just donated and was wondering if GCN had covered their 500k goal, but was surprised to see no new videos on the topic at all.
Love it, just love it.....
Thanks Brenda!
Emma is amazing......
Don't worry about Box it's Leith Hill is the toughest! Hope to see you on the day I'll give you a push!
Haha thanks Roy!
so how many other people didn't feel so bad when they saw Emma struggle up that hill ??
I'll do the old fashioned sponsorship 50p per mile.. good luck lass
If Emma keeps riding that up climbs, she's going to have legs like quadzilla.
