    We put up a fence and pulled it as right tight as we could. I had watched your video the night before. after the fence was up, my husband was not happy at all with it, not right enough. I grabbed a pair of pliers and did this and walaaw... tight fence. almost brought him to tears!

      it will save you alot of time to view fences as four pieces...not four pieces all at once. You view structural integrity as each of it's own section..a puzzle not finished cant be picked up, but once it's finished you can.

    We are putting up a fence in the back yard and had some trouble tightening the fence in certain spots. This was a great help, so easy to do, and a quick fix. Thank you!

    Thanks so much for this! We belong to the group of people who can't hire professional installers, and we're total amateurs at handy stuff, besides. Our fence will look so much better after a little tightening.

    I saw this video last year when I was starting to build my new chicken coop using reclaimed fencing. Did this tip come in handy!! Try as I might to get each section of fence tight, it just wasn't any where near tight enough. So, I spent a lot of hours using this tip to get the fencing nice and tight. Thank you so much!!

    After you do this - take a bit of wire and loop it from the bent wire to the next unbent wire and twist till it's tight. It will keep the fence from slowly springing back

    Thank you for posting this, made my day. Just put up a welded fence just like this one. It was wobbly in some areas due to a non-level surface. This trick made it nice and tight. Not sure what I would have done otherwise.

  • @AldermanFarms

    I'll buy that. But there are lots of folks who can't afford to pay professional installers, and even those who can could be faced with a sagging fence years down the road. There are lots of environmental factors that could result in a sagging fence, especially after many years. Thanks for the comment.

    When you put in fence post you should always water them to set them after and push your foot on both sides. It'll set that way and you don't have to worry about alot of rain for the first time setting your post for you at a tilt.

  • @AldermanFarms
    @AldermanFarms  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good point. I agree braces will lessen the chance, but they won't guarantee it, given the conditions of the ground. You're totally correct under the right conditions, though, and I appreciate the comment. We don't mind the "Z's". ;-)

  • @AldermanFarms
    @AldermanFarms  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Depends on whether there are goats on either side of it! ha. ;-) Seriously, our dairy goats LOVE to rub along the fence, and they push as hard as they can. If we've tightened fence using this method and they goto pushing, those z's will stretch right out. But thankfully the fence seen in this video isn't housing goats, so it's stayed nice and tight. No loosening since we tightened it. ;-)

  • @AldermanFarms
    @AldermanFarms  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, fence will loosen over time no matter how good the bracing it seems, and a pair of pliers can tighten it up if you don't have time for more (or new) bracing. ;-)

    I've done it on my electric fence (with it turned off!!), ha. BUT, more recently when I need to tighten an electric fence strand (on the cheap), I've done so with two short twigs and it works great. I just put the line between the twigs, with the twigs running perpendicular to the line, then sort of roll the line around the twigs. I've been happy with the result! Let me know how it goes on your garden fence, and thanks for stopping by!

  • @AldermanFarms
    @AldermanFarms  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks! Simple, isn't it? You know, I'm not sure the gauge is listed on the sticker. If I had to guess, I'd say 14. T-posts spacing seems to be a matter of taste & application. I've seen recommendations of 5', 8', and 10'. The heavier the animal, the closer the spacing, of course. Now, don't tell anyone, but sometimes I just "eyeball it," placing one t-post in the center of the run, then start halving the sections from there until I think it's sufficient. Those t-posts ain't cheap! ;-)

    Hey I'm so sorry for the delay in getting back to you! Let me ask you this: are they puppies?? Reason I ask is that if it were me, I'd strongly consider electric fencing. As puppies, they could be easily trained by enclosing them in a small area to ensure they would learn that they don't want to touch that fence! But I'd bet they could even be trained as adult dogs. However, if money is not an issue for you, I would probably choose 4' hog wire. Let me know what you think or what you choose

    Great tip, thank you. I am moving out of the city into the country and these type of advise are gold for guys like me. Say, I noticed you have a wooden post, and also metal ones supporting your fence. Can I get away with just the metal posts, or is a wooden post essential? I appreciate your advise.

    • @AldermanFarms
      @AldermanFarms  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Marcus Thanks for your kindness! The wooden posts are typically for corners or end-of-run points, where you need something more substantial to withstand the pulling force. I'm afraid the metal posts would bend under the force.

    • @ajc5404

      Hahaha! Yeah, not the most professional of tips. However, I’ve got a few stretches of fence on which I did this years ago, and it’s still standing, without further intervention having been necessary. I’ve since learned how to install fence better. ;-)

    • @josephhillenmeyer2533
      @josephhillenmeyer2533 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I installed a section of new woven field fence yesterday - used a U-brace, wire tensionor, etc but the ground was pretty wet (weekend warrior and I had to get it done before Monday or wait a week). Anyway, it was great until I let the tension off the come along - same issue Alderman here, it pulled the posts at one about 1/4 inch or less. Not terrible, but now the fence is looser than i like. I was curious - could i carfully pull the posts the other direction with my tractor or truck tonight, fill and tamp? While i'd happily use this little truck on some older fence - i hate to start crimping day old wire....

    • @AldermanFarms
      @AldermanFarms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      is there any way to place tension on the posts and leave it there until the ground dries? I hope Mr. Higgins replies.

    • @josephhillenmeyer2533
      @josephhillenmeyer2533 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was my plan.. however I actually fixed this after realizing a stupid error... I had may tension wire at the wrong angle. I turned it around so the diagonal went the other way and I was able to tighten the fence right up! I even thought about it, and the fence didn't loosen when I took the tension off the come-along, it loosened when I when I tightened my wire - because i was actually adding slack to it. Live and learn! All good now. Great channel btw and thanks again for the tip.

    NO! NO! don't do that. Nearly every single broken fence wire that I find is a location that a previous rancher or hand did that to a loose fence wire. This creates a weak/ fatigued place in the wire. Anybody who uses this technique will regret it a year after.

      Nope. I've got fences that have been adjusted this way that have been up for years. Just don't twist it too far. Do a little in several places rather than tight 90% twists.

    Not a very good idea for high tensile wire when the wire bends back it will break

    If you brace your end posts your fence wont loosen off, which means you wont have ugly Z shapes in your fence

    I would be fired from my job for doing this. Wherever you crimped the wire, you have now weakened that wire. This is a terrible way to tighten wire!!

      Exactly. What happens when you put more pressure on the fence.

      Well then how about to put up a video on how you do your welded wire fences

      I guess since it’s just a garden fence & not holding in livestock it’s not that big of a deal
