Hi thank you for this video! I appreciate all the information you put about psych graduate education. I wondered if you think that having a masters program would be beneficial to applicants with low gpa even if it is not in psych or counseling ?
This is a good question to ask schools that you would like to apply to. Some schools will prefer a masters and some may tell you that you should get clinical or research experience and apply to their program. So it just depends where/what program you apply to.
so in other words taking non-degree courses as well as acing the GRE are a couple of ways to get into grad school. will it help if the non-degree courses are in the field you want to pursue? could you do a video on the difference between a degree and work of a clinical psychologist vs a licensed clinical social worker? am torn about which to go into, in your opinion does name matter in terms of schools?. I feel if anyone is to pay a lot of money to attend a post-graduate program they might as well go to the best schools.
Yes, doing well in psychology courses is the main thing. Even if the psychology courses aren't your major, it's more important that you do well in psych courses than degree courses if you're planning on applying to psychology grad programs. Of course though it's good to do well in both so you have a back up in case one doesn't work out! Some schools will focus on GRE and others may focus more on GPA, typically most schools will collectively look at the applicant's work exeperience, clinical experience, gpa, gre, letters of recommendation, and overrall fit with their program. If you're not great in one area, then you can try and make it up in other areas. Overrall, as long as a school has a reputable accreditation, i don't think it truly matters where you go, it's more about personal fit for most people and where they feel like they will be the happiest/most successful after grad school but of course it doesn't hurt to shoot for the stars too! Thanks for the vid. I got low GPA 3.0 (suddenly dropped to lowest during covid and improved after). Got 2 yr research xp and 2 publications. will GRE scores help compensate? what else can i do to have a chance?

hey i know that I'm late to this video, but due to undiagnosed health issues i have failed a few courses and my gpa is 3.2 rn but I've been selected for an honours thesis, which I'll be starting in the fall and also a clinical internship, I'm planning to apply to a master's program in the US (Rn I'm planning to apply for Penn state, Eastern Illinois, Illinois State) for the next fall as an international student, do i even have a chance or should i just give up and continue my education in my native country??
This is a tough question to answer as it depends on multiple factors like gpa, gre, clinical experience, research experience, as well as interview skills, personal statement and letter of recommendation letters. If all of those things are good typically you will be competitive.
