- This is one of those times that I've heard the name Triumph many times over the years, but they just never made it onto my filming list. Until now. I heard they were a power trio, and once they were compared to Rush, I knew I needed to make this happen. And I am SO GRATEFUL! Let's do some more, shall we?!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Triumph for the first time, performing "Fight The Good Fight”.

"Lay it on the line" should be next!!!
Thanks, I wasn't sure I've heard this band before, but I definitely know this song. Must be one of those classic moments where you know the song but not who did it.
Yes! but from this show. This whole set is their best ever. At their live peak and recorded very well as Gil the drummer is a producer with his own studio
I agree wholeheartedly
Most definitely
I totally agree, Lay it on the line is a great song, and they did it great during their performance at the 1983 US festival
Triumph set at the 83 US Festival is one of the all time great live performances. They absolutely stole the show that day and the same stage that same night had Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osborne, Joe Walsh... And TRIUMPH was by far the BEST!!!
Also, these guys are the most underrated band ever. Massive talents, massive techniques and some of the most positive uplifting messages in lyrics. A really good rabbit hole to go down. You wont regret a second spent getting in it.
They certainly didn't get the recognition they deserved as good as they were.
Triumph were touring the east coast, flew to the US festival in California (where they used rented gear ) and immediately after the show went back to Florida to continue their tour...a true Rock and Roll Machine!!!
Another trio I would count along with them as being underated would be King's X
@@robertgreen6433
Totally agree. I've been requesting them for this channel for a long time. Let's rally for King's X!
Joe Walsh played on the next day. Triumph was heads and shoulders above the other performances that day .
My husband was in a horrific work accident which left him a quadriplegic and when he was in a medically induced coma, our son played this song over and over to him. Sweetest thing I've ever seen a son do for his father! ♥️💪♥️
I forgot how endlessly optimistic Triumph's lyrics were. This song, Magic Power, Never Surrender, Follow Your Heart, Hold On. Just the titles alone tell the story. I can't think of another act whose musical cannon is so full of positivity.
I still believe in the power of truth. That the fire of freedom can burn in the heart of a song.
Agreed. In this current age of darkness and nihilism, Triumph is indeed a blast of fresh air (and downright based).
@@mountainousterrain1704Dare to dream in all that you do
Forever can never be wrong
Never Say Never from Triumph's HEAVIEST, and last album with Rik - SURVEILLANCE!
Triumph is so under-appreciated. I am glad you are giving them some attention!
💯
10000% agree
yeap, very underrated, and I am one of those that *used* to underrate them.
Ditto.
I agree with that!
Canada's other power trio, along with Rush they did our country proud in the 70s and 80s.
Lots of power trios in Canada. The Tea Party is another one.
I have to admit, sometimes I misattribute Triumph songs to Rush, and have done so since I was younger and the music was new.
It's good for Canada to have Triumph when Rush needs their luggage carried.
What about Prism?
@@lindalor9284 A pun and a CanCon reference together. Nicely done. Wayne & Shuster would be proud.
Rik is a hell of a guitar player as well. Her excitement and her facial expressions are the best. It’s like a kid on Christmas Day.
I'm sooo glad you finally found Rik Emmett!!!!!!!! This song, in particular, has helped me through an awful divorce, and reclaiming myself and my life...Fight the Good Fight Elizabeth! I love your channel!
Wow!!! Triumph. I can't wait, and "Magic Power", "Hold On" are another classic songs by Rik Emmett on vocals.
This band features Rik Emmett and Gil Moore (Drums) on vocals, depending on Song.
@@user-ke1tn1kb8r Won't be a popular opinion, but I always preferred the Gil Moore tunes. I really like his voice.
@@tghagen1967 I like Gil's songs, but I am sorry, he does not have the vocal chops that Rik has. As a matter of fact, Rik is on a whole other level musically. His vocals are Steve Perry, Ronnie James Dio, Steve Walsh, Geoff Tate level good...his guitar skills are virtuoso as well.
His vocals on Hold On are amazing
@@mikehocquard2843 I agree.
Rik is off the charts with his vocals and playing. An EXTREMELY talented individual.
Whoa... I can't beleive I got to 50 yrs old without hearing of this band. As a huge Rush fan, I LOVED this. Thank you Eli and patrons for once again introducing me to fantastic music :)
Whoa! dig in!
I'm in the same boat. Very surprised I've never heard of them, and I'm impressed.
Play their whole US Festival Set. It's incredible and tight and it's on youtube. They were better live. Saw them twice
Rush: Power trio with a singer with an unusually high voice, a bass player who also plays pedals and keyboards, an extremely dexterous and brilliant lead guitarist, and lyrics that have deep meaning.
Triumph. Power trio with a singer with an unusually high voice, a bass player who also plays pedals and keyboards, an extremely dexterous and brilliant lead guitarist, and lyrics that have deep meaning.
The debut album "Rush" dropped on March 1st, 1974.
The debut album "Triumph" dropped on October 13th, 1976.
Both bands are from Toronto. So is Max Webster who you have never "covered" but you have "heard" because the crowd cheering in Rush's "Spirit of Radio" is actually a recording of a Max Webster crowd.
God.... it was AWESOME to be 13 years old in Toronto in 1979 when all three bands really started hitting their stride. :)
Thanks for finally finding some more great Canadian Rock... and there's lots more if you care to look for it.
Cheers!
~Dan
I was at this show in 1983. Triumph took the stage as the sun was starting to go down. Perfect setting for Rik and the boys with their white stage costumes, and Rik's sunburst guitar. It was a magical moment for sure...witnessing one of the greatest performances in rock history.
Me too! AMAZING event! You should get the DVD, it's excellent!
I’ll bet it was an amazing concert!
I was there, too, and Triumph's set was when the day became magical...
@@BJMauck It was EPIC! Sadly all the later big ones like this one were all marred by violence, vandalism, and gang r@p3s. In contrast ours was totally peaceful. We were cool and mellow and just wanted to have fun and party, the crowds today are just full of a$$holes who want to wreck everything.
Hell Yeah I was a young 12 year old and in attendance also. Such a fun and legendary day. My first concert.
Fun fact for all the guitar nerds out there.. Rik Emmet is playing a Framus Jan Akkerman special guitar, designed by German guitar brand Framus especially for the legendary Focus guitarist Jan Akkerman. It is a semi-hollow but still very heavy extra thick Les Paul style, they are mega rare
Almost bought a black one with gold hardware 10 years ago. I regret not getting it every time I play.
@@AlfOfAllTrades I should thumb you down for not buying it 😁😁
@@rockero1313 *sigh* I'd deserve it. It played great.
Probably has RIDICULOUS sustain too. Thanks for that info :D. Jan was an awesome guitarist himself.
I noticed the semi hollow and one F-hole on top and wow Akkerman playing on that Hocus Pocus is amazing
"Magic Power" or "Lay it on the Line" next please.
When I was a "paper boy" my bundle was dropped in front of a former bowling alley where Triumph rehearsed. Mike, the bass player, came out one day and I asked him what the band was called - he said "Triumph" and I said "never heard of them" 😁He replied "you will!" 😎
This was a song made about his mother who fought her battle with cancer and eventually lost it. I weep everytime I hear it. I dare you to read about it then go back and watch this again with that in mind; tears may flow.
I caught him doing an acoustic set at a music fest in Burlington, Ontario around 2009. A tent on the main street and maybe 150 people in attendance. Fantastic.
Oh wow. I didn't know that. Tears just sprang to my eyes.
@jenniferallred9367
Knowing that story since I as a kid whenever that song play it hit me hard. I joined the Air Force in 1991 and six months later I buried my very close grandmother and my aunt. I had to ask the red cross to get me tickets and my seargent went against rules and let me go to both funerals; the military usually only allows a troop to go to only immediate family's funerals. Take that video away and put headphones on and listen eyes closed and it is very sad but gives you hope still.
@@jimmybuttons7125 I've been a Triumph fan since the early '80s and never knew that, either. However, I still had to wipe a few tears away while listening (before I saw your comment), because this song evokes so much emotion and special memories of better times when it was released. Triumph was on constant repeat in my car during high school! 💜🎵
Oh man I didn’t know that. Thanks.
I have been waiting for this one for a long while. Rik Emmett a great vocalist. Great band, great song and you picked the best performance for this one Elizabeth. This one to go on your uplifting song playlist. I know it's on mine.
I was there that day, just a few days before I turned 17. My parents were there that day as well and when I asked them what they thought of all the great bands that played that day, my dad told me that he was surprised at how good the singer for The Scorpions was. My mom, who wasn't much of a rock fan (although she liked the Grateful Dead) but had some musical background (unlike my father who only played drums on the steering wheel while driving) said that she was very impress with Rik's guitar solo.
It made perfect sense, the guy is freaky good at both singing and playing guitar. The only thing we had like him in the US at the time was Dave Meniketti from Y&T.
But yeah, I was there in the crowd... absolutely losing my mind because I love this song so much and the positive energy that they convey though their music. Plus, when you're in a crowd of roughly a HALF A MILLION PEOPLE it's easy to get swept up in the moment.
I was very fortunate to attend both US Festivals, they were amazing experience punctuated by incredible live music performances. Triumph was the only band to had the foresight to negotiate the rights to the video of their set in their contract. They were the only act to release a DVD of their set officially. Much of the footage is being made available on YT through historic film preservation folks and some of it has decent sound. Unfortunately for most of the bands, it just shows how much more professional Triumph was. Van Halen made over $4 million that day and their set is unsellable. Hell, it's unwatchable. Even if (like me) you enjoy watching clowns like Diamond Dave (LMFAO) embarrass humanity.
Rik is a force of nature.
🤘🧙♂🤘
Your my favorite vocal analysis channel. You do bring the joy of music to us all. Thank you.
Triumph is incredible. Magic Power, World of Fantasy, Hold on, Never Surrender.. so many to choose from.
Rik wrote the song about his aunt who was battling cancer. This song has actually been an inspirations to millions of Triumph fans over the years. In my opinion, the most underrated rock band of all time.
Thank you so much for this! His vocal performance at the US festival is some of the most impressive vocals I’ve ever heard. He’s really channeling his Rush inspiration here
Triumph and Rush had debut albums in 75 and 74 respectively...pretty close to the same time period. Rush was definitely not one of Rik's influences. He had stated many times that Clapton, and Page were amongst his major influences. Triumph was a Zeppelin cover band in their early days.
@@bobbrown6603 Glad to see you address this, since I keep seeing it on reaction videos. Bands from this time period especially did have some similar elements in their music, but it wasn't because they influenced each other. It was because they grew up in the same era, listened to the same music and were inspired by a lot of the same bands that existed in the generation before them. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, etc always figured prominently in the sound of the 1970s bands. What they were able to add or take away from that was what made them unique. But there was always a common thread.
I just want to add, your guitar solo reaction to a phenomenal player like Rik Emmett was absolutely adorable and priceless. I too, love the guitar solo.
Gil Moore ( the drummer) is also a fantastic singer.
This performance set them up for massive U S. Airplay.
They were popular, but the set from this concert launched them internationally
The fact that he can sing while playing the drums just blew me away. 🤯
there problem is that they both song in the same range (sometimes sounding very much alike)
He's also a very good golfer.
Gil is good, but he does not have Rik's vocal ability. Rik is on a whole other level.
@@jeffwarren4938 very few are on rik's level.
Magic Power is an amazing piece that Triumph did! The singing guitar will always be one of my favorite moments!
And I think Elizabeth will relate very strongly to the lyrics, it's basically her whole credo regarding music!
@@FrozenRose816I just saw an interview with Rik (it is on the Tube), where Rik said that Magic Power was about himself and his mother. He said first off it is about himself, when he was young, listening to music and baseball under his covers in bed with a little transistor radio, but changed the lyrics to a girl based on his mother. She was always listening to music on the radio, and singing around the house, and was a huge influence on him becoming interested in music. In the same interview he discussed Steve Perry asking/complementing him on hitting such high notes effortlessly when they opened for Journey at a stadium show. He also talked about his vocal approach, guitar stuff...playing right, even though he is left-handed. He frankly discussed getting older, and how you have to approach songs differently, as he had turned 70 at that time. Very, very humble and honest guy...great listen...about 18 to 20 minutes long.
I concur
I was at the '83 US Festival. I had just turned 21 in March. Three days, and in between me and my buddies would go back out to the station-wagon we had driven and slept in sleeping bags. Then back the next day. The highlights for me were absolutely Triumph. But also, U2 totally stole the 3rd day...and this was when they just had the hit 'New Years Day', and that was basically it. But WOW did they kill it that day. Also Stevie Nicks and David Bowie finishing up the last day. It darn near wasted me, but the memories will always be there.
Thank you for looking at one of Canada's many talented acts. Triumph had alot of positive and uplifting songs. Glad to see this.
Finally, Triumph is getting recognition that they deserve! So underrated and should not be overlooked. Rik Emmett’s voice is amazing. “Lay it On the Line”,
is your next voyage of Triumph. CDN Rock, Rocks!! Thank You for covering Triumph!!
I wholeheartedly agree.
I can't believe you did TRIUMPH. An all time favorite of mine in high school. Rik Emmet is amazing - such vocals and such guitar playing (the first guy I heard in rock bringing flamenco elements into some of his solos). Seeing you experience his skills makes me so happy. 🔥
Perfect musical development. No one part is over another, but all create a whole.
I want to thank the person, who recommend Triumph and this song. I was spending so much time, trying to pick right song and this person nailed it.
Great music, great food and great company. What more could people need? 😃
Rick is an accomplished classical guitar player . He would sit on a stool and play his 12 string at full concert level sound. It was spectacular! You should contact him for an interview …. He’s a really nice grounded guy.
I concur
Triumph and April wine were my first concert when I was 13 lol
I saw this show, and Triumph at the Rose Bowl the year before, but sadly, I never got a chance to see April Wine.
Omg I love April Wine. Takes me right back to those days.
Very Nice. I was going to recommend some April Wine as well, :)
@@Ashtrayred Sign of the Gypsy Queen!
I saw them with Mountain opening.
Sincere, uplifting, honest. Traits that make TRIUMPH music GREAT music!
So happy you have flipped into their catalog.
I'm one of the people that said you'd love Ghetty Lee and I've been waiting almost a year for you to finally listen to triumph!!! A good few amazing songs, but "Magic Power" is their true artistic masterpiece.. You HAVE to listen to it!!!
I like that Rik isn't afraid to wear his guitar up higher which is much easier on the wrists and hands, rather than trying to look cool with it slung down by his hips.
Yep...wears it in the classical style. A lefty playing right as well.
Teaches music business at Humber in Toronto now. I know some people who took his class. Super awesome guy apparently.
@@cameronswan8646He retired from Humber in 2018.
I never understood how Triumph didn't get wider radio play nationally, just a brilliant band and I'm always amazed how even many rock fans aren't all that aware of them. Great songs and musicians! This whole US Festival show is fantastic. Allied Forces is my favorite Triumph album, but so many great songs across the catalog and Rik is still putting out wonderful music and sounding amazing. Gil also sings lead on a number of Triumph songs and sounds great on this live show as well.
In my opinion, it's because their studio albums were shockingly sterile sounding, when compared to their concert presence. I think if they had paid for a big name producer then they would have been among the top five sales in the early 80's. (Like what Martin Birch did for Maiden). But absolutely the best live band I have ever seen (1985). The only album I ever recommend is 'Stages', because it's a live recording of course!
@@christophercook1631 Yeah I would love to hear what could be done with the original masters by someone like Terry Brown or Giles Martin. I think Allied Forces is probably the best sounding album of the era, but having gone back and listened to the early studio stuff a lot, I'm with you when you compare it to other 80s rock it just doesn't jump off the record like it should/could. Most of those 80s albums were recorded in Gils own studio, Metalworks, so i think maybe they thought they knew better at the time, though the studio has won a ton of "Recording Studio of the Year" awards over the decades, not sure of the criteria, heh. I'm glad we have the amazing live recordings that we do though! The US Festival DVD is just amazing.
No electronic BS or auto tone. Real performance! God I miss the old days.
I attended this concert amongst 300,000 others. Triumph was magical.
One of the best LIVE singers ever!!
Absolutely and Live Triumph is where it's at! I always found their studio versions mostly subdued compared to Live. Esp at this show. Apex moment
thanks
Rik is a once in a generation talent, vocally and as a guitar player. He is literally a guitar prodigy of the highest caliber, putting out all the amazing Triumph records, then moving to instrumental fusion and jazz, and also an accomplished classical player. Gil Moore also has an amazing voice, more a straight ahead rock singer, but still great. Triumph were some of the best shows I've ever seen.
Absolutely love Triumph! Rik has amazing vocals, a genuine virtuoso on the guitar!
If I could give a thousand up votes on this I would. Golden level classic rock.
Their drummer has a set of pipes as well as seen on "When The Lights Go Down" from the same show. Great band!
Yep!
Definitely, A drummer that can play at his level and sing at the same time is to be respected.
Yes! I think she'll love Gil's voice too!
Love "when the lights go down" esp from this show. "I got itchy fingers for the... trigger TO-night!"
This entire performance was epic. A band in their prime, without a doubt. Saw them many times. They were always on and they never disappointed. Rik Emmett is a legend.
I graduated from High School in 1983. While in HS, SO many of my classmates were hardcore into Triumph. I just didn't get it... until 20 years later. WOW. These guys were/are SO great. It's a shame I missed out on loving them for so long. Oddly enough, my older brother was hardcore into Rush and I fell in love with them about 20 years later. Go Canada!
One of the most underrated bands, to the extreme!
One of the best vocalist/guitarist in the 70's 80's. They had so many hits through the years
First Kansas and now Triumph! I've been waiting a long time for this one. Best thing is that you picked a live performance from one of the greatest live recordings of a band. Triumph has so many good songs, but this one tops the list for me.
Elizabeth, This was the biggest day of US Festival ( Day 2 ) with 375,000 in attendance, Triumph was one of Steve W's favorites, and this song was inspired by Rik's Aunt fighting Cancer, giving greater meaning to these lyrics when you pay attention to them... Watch the other songs from this performance too, it's ALL Amazing. This was an all time great performance for these guys !
I was talking about this concert a few months ago and how perfect it was. Absolutely one of the best live performances I've ever seen.
You are gonna love this band live! No voice auto-tune..Rik is an amazing singer and guitarist they absolutely stole the show at the US festival ❤

So happy you decided to do a video on Triumph. They have always been one of my favorite bands ever. So great! 😀
Probably one of the most underrated rock bands of all time. They're excellent musicians and song writers and Rik Emmett is a genius! Nice reaction!
He sang this song with such passion, because it was written for an aunt that was suffering through cancer.

God Bless you Elizabeth for highlighting one of Canada’s greatest musical treasures. Saw them in 1979 as a very young teenager. Blew my mind. 🤯
This is one of my top ten favorite songs of life. The contrast of light to heavy is perfect, and Rik's voice was on point..the choruses were so "epic"...it makes me weep tears of joy whenever I listen to it...
Rick is an extremely humble man , also the Drummer they give so much back to the community
I met Triumph w/ Bad Company back in 1986 at a show in Indianapolis. We had backstage passes and got to meet the band and get autographs. Their guitar tech had us sit on the stage with him. It was crazy loud by the amps with zero ear protection back then. Great show, great night, great guys! Magic Power was my anthem in my early teens. I suggest giving it your reaction Elizabeth. Thanks for all that you do. ❤
Triumph was my favourite band growing up, and Fight the Good Fight is my all-time favourite song. Whenever I get a new speaker, phone, headphones etc. I still christen them with this song. Man the memories. I can remember just cranking Allied Forces, Thunder Seven etc. on my JVC RC-880 boombox when my parents were out and playing air guitar to Fight the Good Fight and Time Goes By. Love Triumph.
Rik was my guitar hero when I started playing and in 9h grade. The guy could play anything and with unreal precision and clarity. I saw Triumph for the first time a couple of years after this show and was totally blown away by the band's energy and incredible sound/stage show.
Triumph was my first concert event. Day on the Green, 1983 with Journey, Brian Adams, Eddie Money and Night Ranger. I was 14. Just an amazing day with my dad and sisters.
I took my oldest son to his first show as an early 14th birthday present. We saw Three Days Grace with Adam, Breaking Ben and Seether. It was a great show and years later we're still seeing live shows together 😁
Great choice Elizabeth. Another amazing Canadian Rock Band

I've loved this song since I was a teen, I'm now64. I still love it after all these years. The message is what keeps me coming back, and watching the adorable Ric in all his glory!
This performance reminds me of the time I got to see R.E.O. Speedwagon as a headliner act and the they went absolutely nuts like these guys did at this performance. R.E.O. sounded so good that I actually peed in my empty beer cup while watching so I did not miss a second of their act. The crowd around me was so entrance by the performance, no one even noticed what I was doing.
Highly recommend reaction to R.E.O. Speedwagon "Riding the Storm Out" live.
Such an underrated band. Triumph rules!
Hallelujah! My prayers have been answered. I am so looking forward to this first.

This was their encore so it jammed long at the end. Killer set. All of it
First time I went to a Triumph show was in early 1985 .....AWESOME....
wow that was you ?
Triumph! YEAH!
Rik Emmett's voice and guitar skills are just from another world.
Welcome to Triumph.
The "good guys" of 80's hard rock! Triumph always had such positive uplifting lyrics, and Rik Emmet is a BOSS on vocals & guitar. Just amazing talent!
Very excited to hear your reaction to this one. My understanding is this song was written as a gift by Rik & the band to Rik’s aunt who was fighting and ultimately succumbed to cancer. Very inspirational song and Rik’s voice is amazing!
Spellbound, Lay it on the line, Magic power, Allied forces, When the lights go down, Never surrender, Killing time...
So many great songs to choose from.
I'm just glad you finally got here. You will spend much time here, especially when you discover just how talented of writers, musicians, & vocalists they truly are. Rick's voice is incredible, but Gil, the drummer is no slouch either.
Triumph deserves so much more recognition. But anyone who knows Triumph knows how many great albums and songs they have written and performed. Rik is an extraordinary guitarist and vocalist.
So excited to hear your reaction from rik and the boys.. prepare to be blown away!!
Finally! Been waiting for you to review this song. Exceptional live performance here.
Triumph was my band in my high school years. I saw them live 17 times. For this tour in '83 we drove 2 hours in a blinding snow storm. The opener, Foghat, got stranded in the storm so Triumph played a nearly 4 four set. It was amazing !
Triumph always had positive messages in their music. Please listen to more! Very underrated band... very good band. I am Canadian... one of our best.🇨🇦
COMPLETELY blew EVERY band off the stage. Rik Emmett is a rock & roll god. This performance IMO is one of the GREATEST live performances EVER. The entire 3 man band Triumph is ELITE. Thank you so much for playing and adding your amazing insight.
Finally finally finally, Triumph one of my favorite bands. I thought you would never get to them. Thank you 🙏🏻
Rik is a 7 course meal all on his own. So damn talented. It's not surprising to me at all that he left the band to explore and express the music that was inside of him. Hasn't stopped yet and I wouldn't expect him to. Very much one of my favorite musicians.
Another great power trio from Toronto. Though they never rose to the heights that Rush did, they were all exceptional musicians in their own right. Unfortunately, they broke up much too early. Great to see them finally getting your treatment. Lay It On The Line, should definitely be next
OMG, OMG, OMG...I've been hoping for you to do Triumph for some time. I'm in my happy place now. Thank you Elizabeth. If you enjoyed that, consider that it was the last song of their set, so Rik had been singing like that for over an hour in brutal heat. Yeah, he's amazing. I really hope you check out Lay it On the Line from the same show.
this is one of the greatest live performances ever! this was recorded at the US Festival in San Bernadino 1983! I was there along with almost 600k other rockers! 23 bands over 3 days 500k people plus every day!
All of their songs are upbeat!!They are one of the TRUE Rock bands. Rick is a master of the guitar!!
Best show I ever saw was an after noon with Rik singing, playing guitar and talking about his method and experiences in Rock music all in an intimate venue that held 500 people. Barrymore's music hall
Thank you for analyzing this song. Such a phenomenal voice and backed with a great band. Truly under-appreciated for sure.
Ive been commenting on this channel, for this band, for a long time. Thanks! " "Magic Power", their swan song, is a song about the love of music, written about Rick Emmitt as a kid listening to music as s kid on this little transistor radio!
Love Triumph. Just an unbelievably underrated band. Anything from this concert is great.
This band is so good and so underrated. I saw them live in June 1983. My ears are still ringing. They are loud but still clean live. I would love to see them live again. They should do what most bands from the 79's & 80's do now, and tour if they are able.
