You know, personally, I always found it interesting how the mentality of this relationship evolved. Because the thing of it is, just as Kim and Ron are opposites, their romantic feelings for each other developed in completely opposite ways.
In Ron's case, everything was straightforward and up front. The way I see it, honestly, Ron basically fell in love with Kim pretty much the moment he met her. It just took him 12 years to figure it out. I mean, you look at half the things he does for her through Seasons 1 and 3...even just tagging along with Kim for all the mission stuff...and you can't tell me that love wasn't the primary motivator. But it wasn't until "Emotion Sickness" that he plainly laid out what the problem was. The thing was, even though Ron was beginning to realize how he truly felt about Kim, he still wasn't comfortable with the thought of expressing it. Mostly because he was afraid if they ever DID get together, that he'd find some way to screw it all up and then not only would he not have a girlfriend, he wouldn't even have a BEST friend anymore. So he figured, why take a gamble when he was already sitting on a sure thing? But then "So The Drama" came along and suddenly Ron's guaranteed arrangement wasn't such a guarantee anymore. So now he had to make a choice...do NOTHING or do SOMETHING. Either way, that meant he had to take a risk...not something he'd ever been particularly comfortable with.
Kim, on the other hand, took a much more roundabout route with her emotions than Ron did. It wasn't love at first sight with her, but I think it's fair to say that Kim's feelings for Ron began to change around the same time Ron was coming to grips with his. Obviously, the first evidence of this actually came during "A Sitch in Time" when we got just a taste of how much they really meant to each other. There was a clear emotional need there, beyond simple friendship. For Ron, this just took the love he'd always had for Kim and brought it into focus, but for Kim, this feeling was something new. And once she'd tapped into that, there was pretty much no turning back. Even after the timeline had been reset, we already know there were lingering aftereffects, so the argument can easily be made that that door to Kim's heart was still left standing wide open.
It was after this that we started to see Kim's jealous side start to peek out. Obviously, her reaction to Yori in "Gorilla Fist" is the BIGGEST example, but it wouldn't be the FIRST one. Consider the episode, "Steal Wheels", when Ron suddenly starts spending more time with Felix, as opposed to when he was spending all his time with Kim. While Felix was, by no means, a romantic rival, the fact remains that, all of a sudden, Kim didn't have a monopoly on Ron's time anymore and she didn't like it. And then, of course, we go back to "Emotion Sickness". Yes, the obvious observation is that when the "Love" function got triggered, Kim and Shego didn't just go lusting after anyone (or...you know...EVERYONE). They each focused their affections on a specific target, which was revealing. But the far more subtle indicator was Kim's reveal of how she had drifted away from her longtime crush, Josh Mankey, after the episode "Blush". She'd finally managed to get the guy she'd had eyes on for so long, only to come to the realization that what she thought she wanted in Josh...wasn't what she ACTUALLY wanted. Basically, the argument could be made that her heart already belonged to someone else by that point.
GEE...I-WONDER-WHO-THAT-COULD-BE?
Now, some may say that Kim's feelings for Ron grew gradually, without her even noticing it, but I don't think that's actually the case. My own read on it is that she had more or less mentally conditioned herself to not think about Ron in a romantic way to avoid things getting..."awk-weird"...between them. This was all mostly laid out in "So the Drama", starting with Kim's phone call to her mother, early on in the movie. It's not that Kim was opposed to the idea of Ron as a prospect. Quite the contrary...if Kim and Ron had actually been an item at this point, there would have been no problem (hence, no conflict and therefore, no MOVIE) because Kim would have already been happy and content. But since she didn't know how Ron felt about her yet, she couldn't bring herself to think of him as romantic option. He was the platonic best friend, and she never saw any indication that he wanted to BE anything more. So putting her life on hold for a relationship that (as far as she knew) was never going to happen just wasn't practical.
A later example comes during the scene in the treehouse, where Kim and Ron are actually having two entirely different conversations, but because they're so completely out of sync, they don't realize it. The key moment in that scene is where Kim says, "We're not in Pre-K anymore. Time to grow up," because Ron is moping and upset over the fact that Eric is in the picture. Ron, naturally, is tweaked because HE'S the one who wants to be with Kim, but Kim still doesn't know this yet and assumes that Ron's recent state of tantrum is because he just wants to hang on to the best friend and playmate he's always had for years. So Kim is trying to make the point that having a playmate isn't enough for her anymore. She wants a companion...someone she can share her life with. And if Ron can't be that guy for her, then she has to start looking elsewhere. But of course, Ron doesn't know how Kim feels either, so he's not getting the message.
It was only just before the climax of the movie, when Ron hinted at how he felt (even if he didn't exactly shout it from the mountaintops) that everything changed. Granted, this was a definite, "flipping of the switch" for Kim. However, I submit that it wasn't because she suddenly discovered that she HAD these feelings for Ron, but because she suddenly realized that it was okay to ACT on them. In an instant, all the mental roadblocks Kim had put up over time were completely obliterated, because as it turned out, all the reasons she thought they had to be there never ACTUALLY existed. That basically meant that she could do all the things with Ron that she thought she couldn't do before. And damned if she wasn't gonna do EVERY-SINGLE-ONE OF THEM.
You know, when you actually look at it in the broad strokes, Kim and Ron's situation wasn't really all that unusual, or even unique. I mean, I think it's fair to say that every single one of us has been there at least once in our lives. You know the drill...you become attracted to someone, but you're not quite sure how to express it (especially if they're an existing friend), because you don't know what THEY think about you. And if YOU bare your soul and THEY don't feel the same way, now suddenly, it's this THING around your neck for all time. Kim and Ron were both at that same impasse, and again, their reluctance to move past it was for completely opposite reasons, with Kim suppressing her feelings out of pragmatism, and Ron suppressing his out of fear. And as with any situation of this kind, it took one of them finally breaking the deadlock to make them both realize that they wanted the exact same thing...specifically, each other.
And that's pretty much my thinking on it. Granted, there's a lot to unpack here, but that's what makes it interesting. ^_^

Having said that, mind you, at least this was one of those romance builds where you kind of see things develop a lot more organically, beyond JUST the "Will they?/Won't they?" foot-dragging that usually takes place* in these situations. With Kim and Ron, you can tell where the seeds were planted, when they took root and ultimately blossomed. And that REALLY doesn't happen as often as it should.
(*I'm looking at YOU, Danny Phantom, Miraculous Ladybug and Star vs. the Forces of Evil, just to name A FEW.)

The problem with those shows is that the showrunners advance the relationship too quickly, and then have to backtrack the progress the characters made or create reasons for the character to avoid addressing or progressing their relationship. Which usually takes the form of hamfisted drama for drama's sake (looking at you Star and Ladybug).
@@Birthday888 Well, the problem with Star and Ladybug is that the foot-dragging in both those cases were merely symptoms of a larger problem both shows had. In Miraculous Ladybug's case, the main issue was that the show's creator didn't want to admit that he really only had two Seasons worth of material to actually work with and was too proud to simply let his run end and hand the reins over to someone else on the Creative Team who might have ACTUALLY had an idea to move the series forward. So he ended up making things overly convoluted and drawing the whole thing out like a taffy pull, just to keep all the characters essentially running in place. As for someone advancing too quickly and having to backtrack things, I actually think that applies more accurately to Chloe Bourgeois, who I submit was the ONLY character actually being allowed to change and grow...only to have her be sacrificed at the altar of the creator's narcissism and undo all the work they did.
In Star's case, it was more a case of the show starting out the first Season as something else entirely, then spending the next three Seasons trying to course correct into something that was clearly too clever by half. And as for Marco, am I REALLY the only one who thinks that Jackie was, BY FAR, the healthier relationship choice for him? In my personal opinion, it was better the way things were originally going, with Star as the platonic best friend and Jackie as the love interest. Instead, they willfully sabotaged the whole thing, all in pursuit of some trope that really wasn't the best fit in that situation. And then they put Jackie in a lesbian relationship toward the end, I'm absolutely convinced, just to give "lame ol'" Marco Diaz one last kick in the nuts before the series ended.

Well, Ron DID f* up, he only realised that he should really talk to Kim about it when it was too late (in the movie). If the other guy that was with Kim would have been real, he was screwed. Thumbs up for Ron for not confessing to Kim at the tree house in a desperate attempt, thats something that many people would have done in his situacion and it would not been fair to Kim.

People fail to realize how Ron is pretty awesome, he's the truest definition of bravery. He bumbles a LOT and he has been afraid of everything, but faced it, and grew stronger, he cooks, he bakes, knows ancient mixed martial arts, is rumored to be a literal demigod amongst the aliens (I for one agree he's this . . . Great Blue) he has great management capabilities as shown when he worked at Bueno Nacho, and he makes millions in bi-yearly royalties just from stuffing a carb into another carb, and he can scarf those carbs down nearly every other day and still keeps pretty thin (Minus the episode where it became an every day kind of thing and he became a fat hulk)

The thing with the moodulator is that it doesn't create feelings, only augments them. That's why Kim said 'not everything' was the moodulator. Kim already liked Ron at this point, but the Moodulator brought that to the forefront, and Kim realized then that her feelings were real, but to take advantage of Ron right then would be poor taste. The moment had to be right, which is why in the movie, she couldn't fight off the blush. Ron's feelings for her were greater than she thought, and that he was genuine, always had been. Their bond was there from the start, and everyone eventually saw it before they did.

Which would also explain why Shego and Drakken getting together in the end didn't feel forced as well. I think Shego is naturally very snarky, but she's usually pretty playful with Drakken compared to most of the men she's worked with. The dynamic is pretty similar, except Drakken and Shego were evil for most of the series.

I think its safe to say they definitely started growing stronger feelings for each other through all of season 3. The best evidence of this was the moodulator as its apparent function was to enhance moods to 11 so when the 'love' setting was activated it just brought feelings that were already there up to full blast, however spotting their affections earlier is a bit trickier however personally i think the mistletoe kiss could definitely argued as Ron's and quite possibly Kim's kick offs for their eventually love for one another. Kim was RELENTLESS in finding Ron and pretty devastated when she couldnt find him. HOWEVER the releif she felt when seeing Ron and the fact she engaged the kiss to me suggests she may have realised the Ron may be more then a friend.

@@kid9046 She definately friendzoned him while she had a crush on Josh, but Kim was never too happy about Ron being popular with other girls, except maybe for Zita, there are signals of jealousy on her part already on S1, it gets more obvious on S2, and on S3 it is very, very clear.
A important event during S1 is that Tara develops a crush on Ron after the Camp Wannaweep episode on S1, Kim knew, but even as she was crushing on Josh she never attempts to get them together or even tell Ron about it, what is a rare thing considering they are both best friends since forever, she admits to keeping this from Ron on S3.
As i see it, Kim realised her feelings for Ron before S3, at some point of S2, but as "Blush" is a very late S2 episode it is dificult to pinpoint. Thats why she chooses to try with Ron and dismisses her relationship with Josh. She choosed him over Josh.
After they start dating i think Kim realised this comes from way back on both parts, and thats why she says "12 years".

I think Ron was always jealous since him and KP did alot of the same things as a dating couple. But he never felt like he had a chance with her and would rather be best friends than ruin it trying to be more than that. Kim had her own streak of jealousy too, I think they both liked each other and just suppressed it thinking they were just over thinking what they felt. I think once the modulator episode happened Kim realized how she really felt, but wanted Ron to step up and ask her out.
@@314jeepsnmopars3 Kim realised earlier than that, thats the 2nd episode, on the opening on the first episode of season 3 were Kim really wants to go out with Ron, but Ron just want to play games it is already clear how Kim feels. It is really hard to pinpoint it because there are so many moments, but i belive that Kim had a crush on Josh in season 1 and 2, even trought it is low key except for 2 or 3 episodes, i belive thats the reason of why she has been friendzoning Ron during S1 and S2. There was a clear hint on S2, the episode that Ron crush on Zita on the movie theater, there is a scene were Kim is waiting for him outside, and one of the things Ron says right there, is that it may seen as Kim and he were coming out of a "date movie", Kim responds with a "You and i... on a date?", and Ron follows with a "it could happen", Kim reaction is positive, it is just the setting that pisses her off in the end (he is saying that at the same time he is crushing on Zita). This tells me that Kim is already open to the idea on back on S2.
I think Kim realised how she really feels about Ron during S2, Kim on S3 also referenced the episode were Ron goes to Japan on S2 (it is on this video) what means she was already a little worried about Ron meeting someone in Japan back then. But my bet is the christmas episode, that was never intended to air in order and i like to consider it as the last episode of S2 (it is not the last, and "Blush" comes after it, but again not intended to air normally with the others), i think the prospect of lossing Ron forever made her to realise how she feels, i think she belived he was dead for a while there, thats the episode were she first kissed Ron too, even trought it is was one sided.
On the 3rd season Kim not only forgot completely about Josh, she is also being more direct and very clear about her feelings for Ron too in several episodes, i think that change was triggered due to what happened on the christmas episode.

Ah, such a fun and entertaining cartoon, well written with simple humor! The creators put a lot of thought into this show.
I have to say, Kim and Ron are one of the best couples ive ever seen. Easily on my top 3 and only because it is hard to me to decide the one i like the most.
The writting was top notch, it builds their relantionship perfectly, were romance was never a priority, there were no simping, they had their ups and downs as friends, they supported each other when the other one was dating someone else at the same time several episodes drops hints that they really like each other whiout going too hard on it. It is just perfect, their relantionship is healthy and you really want it to happen.
You can actually feel Kim pain in the episode she is jealous about Yori, and yet she still pointed out to Ron that Yori liked him. While at the same time making clear (to the audience) that she has been dropping hints to him, and she is sad that he does not seem to realise.
Same when Ron realised that he had feelings for Kim, too late, on "So the Drama", he could have told her in the tree house, but it wouldnt been fair to drop that on Kim at that point, instead he tries to get out of the way as best as he can. It really suprised me because many, many people, in Ron place, would have told her in the tree house.
The part that i think it is missing in the puzzle is how they handled their relationship after the mood modulator episode, that was a game changer and they never comented on it again. Kim was aware of what was happening, she kissed Ron, Ron was responding to it, it just that he was too afraid. It would be really hard to go back to normal like nothing happened after something like that and Kim final comment on that episode is not clear. Still thats one of my favorite episodes, and the little detail there is that Kim true feelings for Ron that kicked in the second he was in true danger where stronger than the modulator.

An explanation: Kim half hoped that Ron liked her, but also thought that he didn’t, so she tried various crushes in an attempt to move on. She kinda hoped he would wisen up to her. She got mad when he called her a date probably because it was playing with her feelings, since she thought he didn’t like her in that way. He never really “supported” her crushes and as evidenced by not telling Ron about that one girl who was crushing on him, and getting highly jealous about Yuri, they both equally were unsupportive. They both had feelings for each other but each of them were equally clueless. In season 3 the love switch for the moodulator was the biggest indication, they left it vague as both Shego and Kim when it was activated were staring at the person they ended up in love with, so it could be interpreted as it made them fall in love with the first person they stared at, but not likely, as if it made you more in love, you would go after whoever you currently loved most, so clearly she had a thing for him and he had a thing for her, though I saw the show runner apparently made a comment that it wasn’t originally intended that they loved each other.
