In fairness, Austin Powers actually makes MORE of an effort to explain the new love interest thing than 90% of all spy movies where it's just "Well obviously there's a new girl, do you know what genre you're watching?"

switching out elizabeth hurley was probably partly due to conflicting schedules, but yes it's also a spy movie thing. there has been a new "bond girl" for every james bond movie since the first, and it's usually an actress or model who is up and coming. heather graham was briefly very hot in hollywood after boogie nights - another movie you should definitely react to - and bringing her on was likely to capitalize on that.

    • @richardb6260

Daniel Craig broke the trend of having a new Bond girl in each film since Spectre and No Time to Die had the same one. But the Craig films are an exception to the rule in a lot of areas.

Bedazzled was the movie that made Elizabeth an instant crush for me and many many other man and women (no matter if straight or gay). I am so sad she hasnt really done any movies or at least Netflix in the past decade, she is over 50 and looks even hotter with her matured very slightly wrinkled face and ultra hot body than when she starred in Bedazzled and A. Powers... just imagine marrying somehow so alpha in your 20s, and 30 years later you still woudnt trade your partner for a young one...

Mike Myers confirmed at the time that swapping out Liz Hurley is 100% a reference to the way every James Bond movie has a different 'Bond Girl' each time, with no acknowledgment of what happened to them. Re: spoof movies, you've already checked out Airplane and Naked, so you REALLY have to carry on to Naked Gun 2-3, Top Secret (spy thriller + Elvis Presley), and Hot Shots 1 and 2. Hot Shots is particular apt right now as it's a PERFECT spoof of Top Gun!

Jess Harvell is correct. Dispatching Elizabeth Hurley is basically a reference to the Bond series, where he has a new love interest every movie. There may also be an element of not expecting to make a sequel, so they made Hurley's character "the one" and then realized they had to walk that back if they were going to do another movie.
Also, echoing the Top Secret! recommendation. Technically, the movie is a parody of WWII movies and Elvis movies, but I think most of the gags will be self-explanatory whether you've seen any Elvis movies or not. There is also a parody of The Blue Lagoon in it, but again, it's not really necessary to know that in order to get the jokes happening.
I would also recommend the music spoofs Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Music will probably be a challenge, but I think people will understand if it's been muted. The former is a parody of any music biopic, although it is specifically named after Walk the Line, and Popstar is named after the Justin Bieber concert movie, but again, I'd say you could watch both without seeing either.

Bond (George Lazenby) does get married in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (to Diana Rigg, no less), but she gets murdered at the end of the film. Still in the wedding dress. So, not unknown for Bond to marry, but not for long.

Usually Bond was with different women in beginning and in the end of the movie , and the names were silly , just trying what they could get away with .
They did Honey Rider , part is in this movie, from Doctor No , James Bond Goldfinger Pussy Galore that was the top , then women names started to get more normal .
Spy who everyone know was already in The Saint movie from 1939 , "My name is Templar , Simon Templar" and bad guy lifted his eyebrows , everyone knew The Saint .
Roger Moore also made James Bond more of a comedy , as he put it in one interview .... Who would believe that a spy ,who is known by everyone , could operate and wearing suit in India , do you know how hot it is there ? I had to change my white suit between every take , when it got so sweaty .

Bacharach had numerous hit songs in the 60's and 70s - usually performed by other singers - but he himself was part of that 60's easy listening scene. In this film it is Elvis Costello singing one of his hits from around 1970, "I'll Never Fall in Love Again. It was originally a big hit for Dionne Warwick (Whitney Houston's cousin) in 1969.

This is what was on the wiki: Although Vanessa's reveal as a Fembot was a deliberately nonsensical twist, played for laughs as a reference to all of the James Bond series' one-time female leads, it has become the most contentious moment in the entire Austin Powers franchise, leaving many fans of the character in denial and anger over how she was written out.

Bond movies that were parodied here include: The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker. In addition to all the other references, there's an anti-reference to those as well. Both of those movies featured Jaws as the privileged Henchman. Jaws was an assassin with steel teeth played by Richard Kiel who was freaky big. Mini-me was physically the exact opposite, but they both attacked by biting. I never put that together before this very moment. Thanks scotch!
The Bikini on the beach was taken from Dr. No. Doctor Evil is based on Bloefeld from the Connery years, (specifically You Only Live Twice, but also seen in On Her Majesty's Secret Service). Oh, and the scene where he used the woman as a shield was from a bond movie where he actually did that. She set him up, so she was evil, but he totally spun her into the line of fire.
The Fembot thing wasn't a parody of any spy movie that I know of. It was probably more like she agreed to do one, then when the sequel became an option, she didn't want to do it again. There is a sort of thing in Bond movies where none of the women are in more than one movie. They nearly always end with him in bed with one and there's never a mention of her again. The one exception to this was a special case, where she was at least mentioned in other films. There were even references to her in the most recent Bond movie, No Time to Die (particularly in the music in a few key parts.
In the 1980's there was a table top James Bond RPG. One of the mechanics of that game was the concept of Hero Points. You essentially earned one for critical rolls and could spend one to improve any other roll at any time. That's kind of what I think Mojo is.
When you get to the next one, there are scenes of one of the actors as a much younger person. Those are all from a movie that was shot back then and re-used.
Fun fact: In Like Flynn was a sort of parody of Bond movies done in the late 60's and starring Lee Marvin as a super cool. The main joke was that he had a cigarette lighter with 187* uses. 188 if you lit a cigarette with it. It was basically whatever the plot needed it to be.
*I don't recall the exact number, it’s been 35 years since I the only time I saw it.
Sorry. I could only manage about 442 words. I’ll make it up next time.

You folks could probably spend the next few months just watching movies referenced in this movie alone if you wanted, but I thought I'd point out Rob Lowe getting hit in the head with the globe is a reference to "The Great Santini" starring Robert Duvall, sadly it is a pretty harsh watch about an abusive father and husband but I would recommend watching the basketball scene to get an idea of just how far Mike Myers was capable of taking such a harrowing scene of fatherly abuse to the light side of comedy, it's funny on it's own because of Rob Lowe's acting but put into the context of the original the dichotomy makes you realize what a ballsy move it was, considering audiences at the time were far more likely to get the reference. Comedy is magic .

My most favorite spoof movie of all times is Loaded Weapon 1. Having seen Die Hard 1 is enough to get it's biggest banger. At least a bit Star Trek knowledge helps, but otherwise - LW1 is self-sufficient in making audience LOVL. The cast is top notch times 20! Other originals: Silence of the lambs, Basic Instinct, Lethal Weapon 3.
PS: Spoof of "The Fugitive" is called Wrongfully Accused, it is not as hilarious as other Leslie Nielsen masterpieces, but still fun.

@@-M0LE Agreed. For me LW1 was the first time I noticed the persona of Samuel L Jackson (in previous movies he was just one of the actors to me). Main shock of LW1 is the overload on top actors. Who do deliver top acting as well.

I wouldn't say you'd have to watch them for references that you might have missed, but the second movie, "The Spy Who Shagged Me", and the third movie, "Goldmember", are spoofs on James Bond movies, "The Spy Who Loved Me" (1977) and "Goldfinger" (1964). Fitting that "Goldmember" is the third because "Goldfinger" was the third Bond film.

Austin Powers draws from 1960’s spy movies. In particular the James Bond series. I would watch Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever. The In Like Flint movie is also an influence. Mike Meyer’s also thrown in the late 60’s swinging London styles.

These movies are a mash up of previous spy spoof gags with "British Invasion" fashion mixed in. Myers' family is from Liverpool (Beatles birthplace), so this is kinda natural for him.
If you watch the TV shows Get Smart (Not the movie version) & Rowan & Martin's Laugh In, you'll understand where he's getting the humor from. (The shoe throwing guy was a Get Smart character.) GS was Mel Brooks' first big project and Laugh-In launched the careers of Lily Tomlin and Goldie Hawn. It's really funny.
If you search for the group Peter & Gordon, you'll literally see Austin Powers. 😁👍
