  • The Colonial Capital of Texas: San Felipe de Austin
One of our favorite things about San Felipe, Texas is the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site. We've visited the site many times over the years to learn more about the fascinating story of this town which many folks have never heard before they visit. In 2018, San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site was made much more interesting by the addition of an interactive museum.
In this video, we sit down with Site Director, Bryan McAuley, to discuss a little bit about the history of the area, the development of the historic site, the museum and future plans for telling the story of the people who once lived here.
San Felipe de Austin was once the Colonial Capital of Texas. This is the site selected in the early 1820s by the Father of Texas, Stephen F Austin, to be the center of colonial life when he recruited the Old 300 settlers to come to what we now know as Texas. At the time, this was a colony of Mexico.
After a rough start, the town began to thrive. At its height, San Felipe de Austin was home to approximately 600 people and was the largest center of commerce in colonial Texas (behind only San Antonio). But that all changed in 1836 when a retreating Sam Houston brought his army through San Felipe de Austin following the fall of the Alamo.
After General Houston and his troops resupplied and crossed the Brazos River at the ferry crossing here, the people of San Felipe de Austin burned their entire town to the ground and crossed the river as part of the historic Runaway Scrape. When General Santa Ana arrived here, he found only remains of a town, with nothing to use to resupply his army and no way to cross the river.
Famous residents of San Felipe de Austin included Stephen F Austin, William B Travis, Jane Long and Gail Borden. Mr Borden ran a printshop here that printed Travis' letter from the Alamo and the Texas Declaration of Independence here in San Felipe. He went on to found Borden's Milk.
