RV DIY can you repair ABS plumbing?

  • If you have a crack in the ABS under your RV you can replace it but you might want to do this first. It’s quick and easy. Even better, it’s not a patch, it’s a repair. If you mix acetone and ABS to make a slurry the acetone will melt the ABS. When applied to a piece of ABS it will met the slurry into the existing piece of ABS and once the acetone evaporates it will be a solid piece. The ratio you use will determine how thick or thin the slurry is. If you need to repair ABS I think this ABS slurry is the way to go.
    If you have any questions just drop them in the comments. If you want to see me actually make some of the slurry let me know and I’ll try and get another video together.

    Hey Dave you the man that stuff saved me a ton of work. I thought I was going to have to change my black tank out on my 86 Travelcraft RV because the whole waste outlet pipe had broken completely off I made up that stuff using your information on making it and I used it it. And it worked real real good. May God bless you Dave you and your family very very much.

    That patch is only a tiny fraction of the thickness of the pipe, so there's a good chance that it will crack again. After sanding, I would clean with acetone to remove the dirt and then apply several layers.

    • @DaviddoesStuff
      @DaviddoesStuff  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the input. Since there isn't any pressure on that fitting it hasn't been a problem so far. We have about 12k miles of bouncing
      since the repair.
      On tight cracks the acetone has a tendency to melt the two sides of the original crack back together.
      It doesn't look like there's a lot on the pipe in the video but the amount of ABS I put on the pipe is pretty close to the thickness of the pipe.
      It certainly wouldn't hurt anything to sand it and add another coat and on a line that had pressure in it, it would be a good idea.
      Hopefully someone will see your comment and it might help them. Have a great day and be safe out there!

    I would like to see a video on melting abs and would a putty knife or nylon bristle brush to apply the abs?

    • @DaviddoesStuff
      @DaviddoesStuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ll do the video. I’ll try and get it out before we leave on vacation next week.
      You can apply it with anything that it doesn’t melt.
      You can make it with a thickness anywhere from milk to Elmer’s glue to peanut butter. It just depends on the mixture ratio and what you are trying to do.

    Will ABS Cement do the same thing?

    • @DaviddoesStuff
      @DaviddoesStuff  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think it will work exactly the same way. This dissolves the ABS then evaporates leaving the ABS solid again which not only fills in the cracks but builds up the area around it.
      It seems like the ABS cement softens the ABS but I don't think it would get thin enough to spread it around.

    Sorry Dave - where do I find the recipe for abs concoction?

    • @DaviddoesStuff
      @DaviddoesStuff  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's just ABS plastic and acetone. There isn't any certain ratio. I try to make it thin enough to spread but thick enough it doesn't run too easily.
      You can get something as simple as a short piece of ABS pipe or an ABS pipe fitting. If you break it up it dissolves faster and the smaller the pieces the better.
      Put the pieces in a container (any glass jar that seals) and add a little acetone to it. Seal it up from a few hours to overnight and check it. Mix it with a wooden dowel or old screwdriver. If it's too thick for your use add more acetone and if it's too thin add more ABS or leave the lid off for a little while. It evaporates quickly.
      Alway do this in a well ventilated area. When you get the mixture to the consistency you like just spread it over the crack. As soon as the acetone is evaporated it's ready to use. The ABS you melted will be as strong as it originally was. You can always add several coats if you think it's too thin, just let each layer evaporate for a while between coats.
      Here's a quick video that might help.

      Any ABS you have will melt in the acetone. If you don't have any extra ABS you can just pick up a small piece of ABS pipe or even a small connector.

    I'm not sure but why not just use abs glue.

    • @DaviddoesStuff
      @DaviddoesStuff  28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      ABS glue works well to secure two pieces that have overlapping surfaces but this bridges the gap in the crack and makes that area thicker. If you don't want to make this yourself, it is available but it's fairly expensive for a small amount.
      If the crack isn't opened up and the pipe has low pressure the glue might work but this fixes it in one try.

    How is that patch holding up?

    • @DaviddoesStuff

      Solid as a rock. The liquid ABS has enough acetone in it that it melts slightly into the part being repaired.

    • @DaviddoesStuff

      Home Depot had ABS pipe and fittings in a big variety of sizes and shapes. If you plan to melt it with acetone it will melt faster if you break it into small pieces first.
