Black house is like having a black car. Nothing looks better when it's clean and shiny but 80% of the time it just looks dirty and a bit dingy. Glad you went with a low maintenance color - love the black trim!
We recently painted our house a deep cobalt blue with pale grey, almost white, trim, and the neighbors loved it, lol! We got so many compliments, but I'd never even considered their opinions when we chose the paint. Our house, our paint colors. I guess we got lucky.
Same. If my neighbors approached me asking me to paint MY house a different color I would of held my handout for their $$. You want to have a say on how I paint MY house then you best be paying for the paint. I would of painted it the most ridiculous colors I could think. It doesn't matter if they were "polite", they have 0 grounds to even ask. Another reason why I'd never live in an HOA.
Good on your neighbors for approaching you politely about your color choices! So often these days we hear about neighbors from hell being rude and aggressive, it's nice to see there are communities where people are still neighborly! I'm super excited for more! The house is looking great!
Painting the drip edge with a good black spray paint works great. It lasts really well. I have also painted over the drip edge with black trim paint and 3 years in no issues .
Yes, and if you want to mask the fascia, get a roll of plastic sheet with tape at one edge. You can stick it behind the drip edge and drape it down. Don't worry about shingles. A few rattle cans and you are set.
Those colors look awesome! I think the reversed scheme still looks great. Can’t wait to see the rest of the progress. I live in the same area and I love to see older homes getting a second lease on life
You’re right painting the gable vent black does make it look better but you should do all of them over the door the other end of the house etc. And as one of your other subscribers mentioned painting galvanized drip edge with a good quality black spray paint does work I did it to mine 10 years ago and it’s just as black now as the day I put it on will save you money and time love the show keep it up
The black on the walls would absolutely raise the interior temperature of the house. Just did a house where the painters recommended putting rigid insulation or a higher r value ( rock wool or mineral wool) insulation to combat the heat that a dark color will inevitably absorb and transfer through to the bays
If you go down to the architectural salvage place in downtown Boise they have a lot of nice doors for pretty cheap. Also those plastic shutters I ripped off my house when I redid the siding and the attract a huge amount of wasps to nest.
How’s it going? I used to work building maintenance in a 17 story residential building in Manhattan. Painting was one of my duties. Preparation and quality paints make a project look great. But, using quality tools is key. My boss kept many a brush, rollers, handles, trays in his shop. Our choice of paints? Benjamin Moore. Our choice of brushes and rollers? Purdy. I made sure to clean and dry them out thoroughly before storing them. It’s nice to see you bring the exterior of the house back to life with a fresh coat of paint. It livens up the neighborhood. Cheers from Brooklyn, NY.
I have never used a paint tray I thought was useful, a bucket and grid are always easier and more convenient. Just like that 10" wand was useful for spraying adding a pole to any roller will make a lot of difference. Less ladder moves or make it so its not needed at all. Man your neighbors saved you by talking you out of painting the house black. Buy them a thank you gift.
I think that you made the right decision with your neighbor. GOOD neighbors are hard to come by, and with yours being also older people, they are just used to the norm, not a lot of change, etc. Both families being good neighbors is paramount, as we are in these kind of “relationships” whether we want them or not. That is not to say that everyone should cave to their neighbors either, but they do have to live next to the pace and you have to live next to them. I have the same issue with some stuff with my neighbor, but keeping a level head, I’ve managed to have a great relationship with them going on 7 years. He’s 82 and I’m 53, so I believe he’s entitled to think he owns six more feet of land than he actually does, but even at my age (Yes, I do want to say “Um, the survey is very different…”, but I’m not looking for hard feelings or anything other than kindness and for them to know they can count on me as well. Again, he’s 82, so if I can be positive, so it won’t hurt me. I’ll have it resurveyed when I can… sometime down the road. Great color too. Nice attractive changes to the property.
When you have a low quality pan for rolling out the paint on the roller, what you can do is take the roller as is and before you apply it to the surface like you usually would, instead sort of dab the roller across the surface a few times maybe a palms length inbetween and then start to roll. This way you get excess paint off the roller and you're rolling it on a bit more uniform.
Wow awesome transformation! I the alcove by the front door it looks baby blue, not sure if that is a shadow or not. Would look cool with some natural light wood in that space. Can’t wait to see the it all finished
We always used grouting sponges and a small bucket of water to complete our caulking. Wipe with your fingers and transfer to the sponge, then come back and do a final wipe with a clean sponge. Less waste that way.
Love the color choice for the main body and trim. Especially love the blue by the front door. Nice accent. You've put in so much work, it's really coming along. Can't wait to see more. Stay safe😃👏
Pro tip bring the brace on your arm further down towards your wrist, so it's about halfway down your forearm it'll take the load off your elbow, and it will heal better.
I see what you mean about that dark color being subtle. It is honestly reading blue green most of the time on the screen. Interesting. Well as usual you did a fantastic job. I love to watch a job done correctly.
Not sure if they sell them still, but try a red Handy Pail when hand rolling. It is awesome. You don’t need the plastic linings either, if you’re using the same color. Pour the excess in a bucket of course, but you can let the rest dry. The next day or two you can peel any left in the Handy Pail. I had like 4 of them when painting houses in college
Magic Spoon cereal is starting to be found in stores! I work retail and we have started to carry it. I got once, I like it. There is one issue tho: the box is very thin.
I guess he straight up just isn’t doing it and gonna leave it open for water and bugs. You’re supposed to install the trim first and butt the siding up to it so it’s doesn’t stick out and leave the gaps. Then caulk. He ran siding first and just nailed it on over top🤷♂️I don’t think hes ever installed siding in his life tbh😂 damn house flippers I guess.
My parents are getting their final home built (18+ moves time to retire) and the walls will be dark grey reverse rolled metal siding, black trim, white windows, and white roof. It'll look nice! I'll try to remember to get you a photo when it's done! It's being built out of ICCF Perfect Block so we're not worrying about the heat from the siding.
The fake shutters look terrible but the rest of the house looks good. You might want to think about getting new windows at some point. They'll make the house look newer and will save you money on utilities.
Black paint, or any ‘saturated’ color will be more maintenance, as chalking and aging are more obvious on darker colors. As others have mentioned, the darker color absorbs more heat from the sun.
You need to paint the rest of the attic vents black like the one near the garage it looks odd being the only one painted , also the window near the front door that is for the bathroom you said you were getting rid , and the metal shelving in the garage near the breaker panel I thought that was going to be the laundry with a washer and dryer .
Looking good. You should have taken a “window fund”😂. I think the majority of us would have donated for you to replace those windows, especially since you have put so much time and effort into this project. 🙏🏼blessings.
Do a natural colored wooden door with black hardware since you werent able to do the black color on the house with the natural accents. Any plans to paint the chimney to match the rest of the house?
I found your channel today and have been binge watching. At least the laundry is getting done. 🤦♀️😂 I'm curious as to what state you're in. The property line has made me curious. I lived in Southern California for almost fifty-six years. I'm in Central Texas now seven and a half years. Both are picky about permits and property lines.
First off I appreciate you respecting your neighbors! They do have to look at it all the time and I think human decency is out the window too often so it’s great to see you willing to work with your neighbors. I see this trend of painting houses black and I think some actually pull it off but I also wonder if overtime it’ll fade ugly, I also think it’d show everything and if you want to go dark do a dark color. Mine has a dark, modern green so dark it can look blackish but it’s out of medal siding and supposedly will last a long time or life long and I went with a dark brown-greige trim color. My house is tiny but it didn’t shrink it’s size appearance wise. I’m just glad we didn’t do black, I love the subtle changes of the green in different light and it’s never boring. That’s my take
I love the look. It may just be my personal taste but I would have painted the red chimney brick the same black, along with that brick planter up front. Just to tie the whole look together a bit more. Otherwise I love it, keep up the good work.
Cool video I think the house is looking awesome. Also not super familiar with Wagner sprayers but you probably have a filter somewhere usually in the handle of the gun that you might need to change and also straining the paint will cut down on clogs a lot and also cuts down on your gun spitting. Getting a swivel head for the end of your wand is very useful also. I don’t know why your neighbors are so picky I think black with white would look good.
I think white trim would've made it pop better. Trim needs to encapsulate, and picture frame the body color, darker colors on your trim also make an already smaller home look smaller.
I wasn't sure about the black trim, but in the end it looks pretty sharp. And hopefully your eyes are still looking sharp after using that sprayer without any protection. At least get yourself some cheap sunglasses.
Black with some natural colors would work good in a wooded area with trees for shade as it would blend in a bit more, on a street with neighbors, not so much, as even though you want some color variations to your neighbors to not all look the same, you also dont want something that stands out too much.
great job and glad you didn't go with the black...too trendy and a hot house. Shutters? Non-functional shutters? That would be the first thing I remove if I bought that house. Your new door must be super slick to distract from the shutters!
I would put some fine wire mesh on the back of those gable vents, those massive gaps in the vent blades are a superhighway for rats to make a new home in your insulation in your attic ;) PS I do not understand how, or why, screw-on exterior shutters became a thing. They look cheesy AF and serve no purpose other than to rot/paint fade and make your house look dated.
I just painted one of my rental properties white with black trim and it looks 🔥. My next house is going to be black. I love it but I can also understand why the neighbors wouldn't like it, it's definitely a bold choice.
Only if it's stained instead of painted! I live in a brick house built in 1812. Someone along the line decided to paint the (already red) bricks barn red. All the mortar between the joints is crumbling because it can't breathe, and all the paint needs to come off. It's a major hassle.
10:30 I’ve been looking for this color. Just started a new flip and the customer likes these colors. I’ve used Tricorn a bunch but can’t find the white. Could you provide a link? Thanks!

i must have missed the part where the neighbor approached him at all.
@@thomasjay975that wasn't filmed. Alex talked about his neighbors asking him not to paint his house black.
It was just clickbait sensationalism this guy is notorious for.@@thomasjay975
@@thomasjay975I fast forwarded the video the 1st time and missed the neighbor coming over as well. Guess I didn't miss it afterall lol
Awesome transformation! I know its not in the budget YET but the windows definitely need to be on the top of your upcoming project list.
Painting the drip edge with a good black spray paint works great. It lasts really well. I have also painted over the drip edge with black trim paint and 3 years in no issues .

The fake plastic shutters are hilarious! 😂 that's something you would never see in Europe.
My wife and I just got done painting our house black! It stands out so much and I love it
86 the shutters…. Shutters should go on casement or double hung windows. Looking good!

I work for a rehab program in my city. We had a homeowner paint her house black with purple trim. It came out looking really good!
I have never used a paint tray I thought was useful, a bucket and grid are always easier and more convenient. Just like that 10" wand was useful for spraying adding a pole to any roller will make a lot of difference. Less ladder moves or make it so its not needed at all.

I love the contrast, it would look even better if you did the lattice trim above the porch black as well.
I think that you made the right decision with your neighbor. Crazy how different the house is from the first video. Super awesome job.

Spray bottle with a little dish soap makes the finish on caulking so much better
Black would be a good color for very cold places. In hot areas the lighter color helps cool things off. But I think it would be pretty .
It's your house paint it what ever you want
Love the color choice for the main body and trim. Especially love the blue by the front door. Nice accent. You've put in so much work, it's really coming along. Can't wait to see more. Stay safe😃👏
is it blue or the overhang making it look darker than the rest of the house?
2:15. That exasperated sigh and far off stare. Questioning everything. Been there many times in projects. 😂
You transformed this house completely. Outstanding work mate !
Pro tip bring the brace on your arm further down towards your wrist, so it's about halfway down your forearm it'll take the load off your elbow, and it will heal better.

The while time I was watching you paint, I was asking, "Why doesn't he paint it black?" Black is stunning. Especially with Wooden accents.
Looks lovely very traditional colours in uk
My fav part was watching the roof move up and down a few inches as you leaned over to paint the facia

Always loving these new videos Drop loving how the house is turning out I'm so glad I've got to see it from day one and following along
Amazing content. Love waking up to seeing a new video from Mr. Build it
Prime an paint yer brick the tricorn black. Been painting 15 years, u won't regret it. Yer wife will love it. Loxon is a good primer at sw too
Oh man! That Neighbor was sooo mad. So crazy...
Magic Spoon cereal is starting to be found in stores! I work retail and we have started to carry it. I got once, I like it. There is one issue tho: the box is very thin.
I keep wondering about the gaps on the side of the trim. How does that get handled as far as sealing? Loving the progress!
I guess he straight up just isn’t doing it and gonna leave it open for water and bugs. What is the purpose of blinds? Just for looks? Seams quite small to be effective. Fun video to watch as always 😊😊😊❤

Enjoyng this series better than anything else you have done. External looking great.
The little tiny shutters on a giant window looks ridiculous 😂.
Thank god someone said it, I thought I was crazy
Americans love to add fake shit and plastic everywhere
Good job buddy!! I like the white with black trim.
Love the job so far. The Flower bed at the front needs to go and they front door needs to be centred to really create some curb appeal.
You sir are an inspiration. Thank you sir.
The fake shutters look terrible but the rest of the house looks good. You might want to think about getting new windows at some point. They'll make the house look newer and will save you money on utilities.
Just adds to this house screaming that it's a cheap flip
It looks good. I would suggest painting ( or whatever you do with brick) the chimney too.
Wow, the entire job just looks so slick. Good work.
I love how he says you need to caulk where the siding and trim meet and then he doesn't caulk it! LOL!

Looking amazing great job can’t wait to see it finished
So smart! PS I find white goes grubby as quickly as black, when rain splashes dust over it!
That’s so funny. I just painted my railings tricorn black😂it’s such a nice colour
The second I open TH-cam you upload, must be a good video for the great timings loving what your doing here mate
Looking good. You should have taken a “window fund”😂. I think the majority of us would have donated for you to replace those windows, especially since you have put so much time and effort into this project. 🙏🏼blessings.
Black houses are fire
The house is looking better and better! That black on white looks great!
Do a natural colored wooden door with black hardware since you werent able to do the black color on the house with the natural accents. Any plans to paint the chimney to match the rest of the house?
Alex!! Paint the brickwork black as well. It will pop
I found your channel today and have been binge watching. At least the laundry is getting done. 🤦♀️😂

It's coming along really nicely! Please tell me you're going to use some kind of pressure washer/jet wash on the brickwork of that chimney stack? 😂😂
Paint the drip edge! Replacing it will be 100x more work. Get some flat black rustoleum and go to town. It’ll last longer than you might think.
Oh yes a new video, nice way to start a Sunday morning
Looks great!! Have you considered white washing the chimney?
House looking beautiful
I love the look. It may just be my personal taste but I would have painted the red chimney brick the same black, along with that brick planter up front. Just to tie the whole look together a bit more. Otherwise I love it, keep up the good work.
It looks so good man, well done! Loving this build and how it's all coming together 🎉
Crazy how much the trim painted black makes such a big difference.
that money shot comment made me laugh so loudly! 😂
Looks great!
That was really thoughtful of you to listen to the neighbors.
Cool video I think the house is looking awesome. How did you find painting over the caulk with a sprayer. I spray internal caulk and it never seems to set!
10:28 Did you mean shoji white from Sherwin Williams? My wife is obsessed with that one.
You should have painted the vertical siding battens black as well. IMO
Regrets not removing the bushes…pulls them out by the end of the video. 😂 love the look though. Sharp, clean lines.
You should definately paint the metal windowframe the same colour as the trim!
I was going to say white white black trim and that is what happened, nice!
You should have hired a painter haha 18:51

Black w/ white trim would have been awesome!
Wasn’t sure how the black trim would look, but it came out amazing! Great work!
We used Tri-Corn black in our new house. We used the satin finish. It’s a good color!
great job and glad you didn't go with the black...too trendy and a hot house. Shutters? Non-functional shutters? That would be the first thing I remove if I bought that house. Your new door must be super slick to distract from the shutters!
That look nice
With all the fancy tools you have, I am surprised you do not have a battery-operated chalking gun ;)
Your drip edge needs some attention in a couple places on the back of the house.
I would put some fine wire mesh on the back of those gable vents, those massive gaps in the vent blades are a superhighway for rats to make a new home in your insulation in your attic ;)
PS I do not understand how, or why, screw-on exterior shutters became a thing. They look cheesy AF and serve no purpose other than to rot/paint fade and make your house look dated.
I just painted one of my rental properties white with black trim and it looks 🔥. My next house is going to be black. I love it but I can also understand why the neighbors wouldn't like it, it's definitely a bold choice.
idk what your plans are for the chimney, but i think it would look really good painted black to go with the rest of the trim of the house
Only if it's stained instead of painted! I live in a brick house built in 1812. Someone along the line decided to paint the (already red) bricks barn red. All the mortar between the joints is crumbling because it can't breathe, and all the paint needs to come off. It's a major hassle.
What color is the alcove by the door area?
10:30 I’ve been looking for this color. Just started a new flip and the customer likes these colors. I’ve used Tricorn a bunch but can’t find the white. Could you provide a link? Thanks!
Freaking loving this series!
What a transformation! Great job!
