I have been in training to be an election worker here in Florida for a few weekends, with a goal to work throughout this November in the general election. My SOLE REASON for this decision was in direct response to the threats of violence towards poll workers. I won't be intimidated, and it isn't in my nature to be distracted by nonsense. I doubt I am alone in this pragmatism and I urge others who understand their civic responsibilities to get trained and come work the polls with me. Training is free and the pay nominal...but he DUTY is all OURS. Don't be a complaining bystander! Participate. Vote.

The DOJ has no jurisdiction on local elections. That’s entirely up to the authorities in the state. At this time, it looks like the Attorney General of Georgia does not look favorably on these rules and it may be that they are a violation of state law. The DOJ used to have authority, but the Supreme Court cut that out years ago.

It's a done deal, mandatory hand counts in every county to provide verifiable vote tabulations. These board member didn't make up this resolution willy nilly. They were presented with credible evidence that the tabulators are not flawless.

Hand counting seems like a good idea to me. There were very serious problems with the tabulation machines which did not even read the marks made on the ballots, but a rather code on the ballot, so that no one could even know if their ballot was correctly counted by the machine.
The national mandate should be ID requirement at the minimum. What is the point of making us all get a ID or DL. If you are not responsible enough to get an ID you shouldn’t be allowed to vote. You can’t tell me that getting into a club is more important than identification to vote. People find a way to get ID then

@@taylorhession1905 Sorry, hand counts are far less accurate than machine counts, and MUCH slower. And IF there were any problem with machines they can be double checked by a hand audit. So you will get a less accurate count, and it will take FOREVER because states do not have NEARLY enough workers to do it. I used to implement a software called "Teleform" that could optically scan documents much more complex than ballots - reading handwriting as well as marks in a bubble. One example was an insurance claims processing job we did. Doing it by hand took an average of about 3 minutes per claim, with a 12% error rate. Using scanning we cut that to under 5 seconds per claim with about a 1% error rate. With ballots the speed and accuracy would be even higher.
Machines will count the votes accurately. Human errors are the most likely outcome especially after a long day. You forget they are there for 12 long hours sometimes later, then they need to count everything by hand. Millions of paper ballots. sit there and count to 100,000 even and see if you don't make a mistake and have to start over etc. You can put the paper ballots through the machines over and over again to ensure accuracy. But you can't sit there and count to millions over and over again if you want the results of the election this year.

Florida does NOT count their votes by hand. Florida has a law that the votes can be counted BEFORE the election is over. This is just how their laws work. Many states don't allow any votes to be counted until the polls are closed. There are reasons for these rules and both sides have merit as to why. Sometimes if votes are being announced and counted before polls close it discourages people from voting toward the end of the day or is states in a different time zone. So many states just hold off until the polls close.

With all the artificial intelligence advances in computing accuracy, we should be able to model a system where every eligible citizen that is legal to vote gets a number. And that number can only be counted once. It's not that hard to do. Currently we have so many ways to fail in our system.
No AI required. What you describe is effectively what happens in several countries around the world. Every eligible voter is sent a card with a unique ID and you hand it in when you vote. One card per person. One vote per card.

I think they should focus more on the input side (voting) than the output side (the count). In Georgia, for example, you can vote without a voter ID by simply showing your student photo ID. While Georgia State law is comprehensive in establishing citizenship, that may not translate to the voting system. In Jul 11, 2024 - Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger started looking into this. In Pennsylvania you can simply bring a copy of your power bill. New Mexico does not even require any ID to vote. These are just a few examples because the process can vary at the county level too.

The DOJ has no jurisdiction on local elections. That’s entirely up to the authorities in the state. At this time, it looks like the Attorney General of Georgia does not look favorably on these rules and it may be that they are a violation of state law.

It's a done deal, mandatory hand counts in every county to provide verifiable vote tabulations. These board member didn't make up this resolution willy nilly. They were presented with credible evidence that the tabulators are not flawless.

Hand counting seems like a good idea to me. There were very serious problems with the tabulation machines which did not even read the marks made on the ballots, but a rather code on the ballot, so that no one could even know if their ballot was correctly counted by the machine.

The national mandate should be ID requirement at the minimum. What is the point of making us all get a ID or DL. If you are not responsible enough to get an ID you shouldn’t be allowed to vote. The challenge is when they require a government ID and close the DMV in some communities I’ve never known anyone who would not get an ID if they had access. When Florida passed the motor voter law you had more young people voting and since they tend to vote democratic some folks wanted to take that away.

Sorry, hand counts are far less accurate than machine counts, and MUCH slower. And IF there were any problem with machines they can be double checked by a hand audit.
So you will get a less accurate count, and it will take FOREVER because states do not have NEARLY enough workers to do it.
I used to implement a software called "Teleform" that could optically scan documents much more complex than ballots - reading handwriting as well as marks in a bubble. One example was an insurance claims processing job we did. Doing it by hand took an average of about 3 minutes per claim, with a 12% error rate. Using scanning we cut that to under 5 seconds per claim with about a 1% error rate. With ballots the speed and accuracy would be even higher.

Machines will count the votes accurately. Human errors are the most likely outcome especially after a long day. You forget they are there for 12 long hours sometimes later, then they need to count everything by hand. Millions of paper ballots. sit there and count to 100,000 even and see if you don't make a mistake and have to start over etc. You can put the paper ballots through the machines over and over again to ensure accuracy. But you can't sit there and count to millions over and over again if you want the results of the election this year.

Florida does NOT count their votes by hand. Florida has a law that the votes can be counted BEFORE the election is over. This is just how their laws work. Many states don't allow any votes to be counted until the polls are closed. There are reasons for these rules and both sides have merit as to why. Sometimes if votes are being announced and counted before polls close it discourages people from voting toward the end of the day or is states in a different time zone. So many states just hold off until the polls close.

With all the artificial intelligence advances in computing accuracy, we should be able to model a system where every eligible citizen that is legal to vote gets a number. And that number can only be counted once. It's not that hard to do. Currently we have so many ways to fail in our system.
No AI required. What you describe is effectively what happens in several countries around the world. Every eligible voter is sent a card with a unique ID and you hand it in when you vote. One card per person. One vote per card.

I think they should focus more on the input side (voting) than the output side (the count). In Georgia, for example, you can vote without a voter ID by simply showing your student photo ID. While Georgia State law is comprehensive in establishing citizenship, that may not translate to the voting system. In Jul 11, 2024 - Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger started looking into this. In Pennsylvania you can simply bring a copy of your power bill. New Mexico does not even require any ID to vote. These are just a few examples because the process can vary at the county level too.

Considering Georgia was one of the states that fraud was alleged, it makes sense to try and avoid that appearance of fraud by taking extra steps. It may be more difficult but how hard it is is not as important as getting it right.

1) it isn’t a naked attempt to backdoor a poll tax or otherwise suppress voting
2) there’s nothing unfair about using machine counting. It’s very accurate & much faster. Under time pressure actually more accurate. It also in no way precludes a second counting by hand if it’s close enough to bother with that.
