  • One day spent at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast doing some Surf Photography during the challenger series "Gold Coast Pro" recently. In this video I go into the thought process, settings, composition and angles I use to get something slightly different from the crowd of other photographers there. I also restricted myself to one lens for the day just to get myself a challenge and show you that you can get a few different looks with the one focal length.

Very helpful video Tom as well as superb images. Just bought a Fujifilm X-T4 along with a 70-300 (100-450 Full Frame equivalent or more when using 4K 60 and 1080 120fps because the extra crop) in preparation for hopefully getting paid work when the season starts again in Europe and Morocco. So far this combination has been a great upgrade and the performance while shooting Birds in Flight and Skateboarding gives me a lot of confidence before getting back into shooting surf.
Even though I'd like to do hybrid shooting for potential clients, it seems as though surfers prefer video which I understand because I would also like to study my technique with my surfing if I was in their position. Therefore, I wanted to ask for some advice.
The image stabilisation of the Fuji X-T4 and 70-300 combo is absolutely awesome as well as being super light, given the 70-300 is only 580 grams. I do have a tripod, but I was wondering if great image stabilisation can allow you to shoot handheld on a job? For photography I think it's fine, but I would love to know your opinion on whether or not a tripod is still a must for video?
    Thanks mate.

Hey mate, thanks for your feedback and stoked you are keen to shoot surfing and are enjoying the process.. thats the most important thing. With your question about using a tripod for video I would say when using longer lenses than 100mm it is absolutely vital... if you want to taken seriously then you really need to produce the best result possible and by not using a tripod for long lens video work is going to significantly reduce the quality of your work... and that doesn't matter how good the image stabilisation is... thats just my opinion from experience,
