Marco loves singing with Floor because she has such a strong voice. He doesn't have to hold back on his vocals.

Marko's ability to sing while playing not so easy bass rhythms at 5:36 is impressive to me

I can be hard as hell, depending on the degree of syncopation. Marko uses specific alternate tunings on both of his main performance basses. I presume it sounds better to his ears and probably makes these bass lines and vocals easier to meld.

I was impressed by Floor from the first notes I heard out of her mouth but the more I learn from people like yourself who are very technical about singing she’s even more impressive. I hadn’t really thought about the need for perfection of every muscle doing exactly what it’s supposed to along with the right amount of breath being utilized just constantly to sound so perfect. I’ve never heard someone have such what I call “overdrive resonance” of her voice...she can turn her voice up to 11 at any time and it just sounds so powerful and gorgeous. Also, her control as she’s coming off notes is the best I’ve ever heard. Again, really enjoy your content and learning more about singing (as a non-singer). PS- my comment on the Floor and Tarja vid wasn’t directed at you was for the people arguing who’s better.

im so glad a vocal coach finally did this song, most just do the big 3 and move on but this, in my non singer opinion, is one of floors most impressive displays of range and diversity and its a super overlooked song. thx for doing it, charlie! i learned lots, as i usually do with your vids

Thank you for that Charlie, interesting and informative as ever, non-singers like me and I expect plenty of others, do not realise how much work has gone into these performances until you point that out, it's very interesting and impressive.
Might I also underline what @Gaël has said below, I know you are not an instrumentalist Charlie but what Marko is singing and what he is playing are very different things, how the timings and beats don't get crossed in his head I do not know, this piece is only one illustration of this talent.
A shout out too for Mr. Metronome Kai the drummer, perfectly timed and really fast (live too) double kicks and hands doing something very different.
Tuomas has said a whole story drops into his head which he then gets a musical idea to convey this as a score, then cuts that up into the lyrics as individual pieces, you will see all the albums follow a theme to the overall story and link one to another too.
    Nightwish are something rather special.

I really love the way you completely dissect these songs, and the vocal abilities of the artists. Always a joy to watch, and learning a lot at the same time. Makes me curious to hear you sing yourself. Will you be posting content from your own performances in the future?
Ah, I just found and saw some of your performances through your website and other YT channel. Great to see you in action. You are really good. Also clearly a true born theatrical performer, so i now better understand why you can relate so much to Floor, her style, her power and her work. Personally, i think Floor could do the great and famous musicals and light operatic performances as well, with ease, as she showed with Henk Poort. You do a big pile in promoting her and her work, so who knows, maybe in the future, we one day might see a Floor and Charlie duet on stage. I would love to see that ;-)
Keep up the good work my friend. It's very positively vibe'd, and very welcome in the crazy corona times we live in today. Greetings!

Amazing reaction on an amazing song that always gives me musical theatre vibes when performed by these two together, and more specifically, Phantom of the Opera vibes for parts of the composition.♥
Still so glad they'd put it on the setlist during Decades tour because to me it always seemed rather underrated before. (As does the entire Oceanborn album except ofc Sleeping Sun and Walking in the Air.) So glad more people get to experience this masterpiece nowadays!

  • @jonhorrocks
    @jonhorrocks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oceans, mermaids, dolphins, etc are a bit of a lyrical theme for Tuomas, popping up in different albums. This was off Oceanborn, which has one of my favourite NW songs, Gethsemane. If you want a reaction with an Easter theme then it's a decent choice! They performed it on this same Decades tour in Buenos Aires, but there is a video of them doing it in Helsinki in 1999 with the original NW line-up. It's an amazing contrast and compare. Different drummer, singer and bassist with the addition of Troy. Well worth your attention :)

    Poet of ancient gods
Cries to tell the never ending story
    Prophecy of becoming floods
An aura of mystery surrounds her
    The lady in brightest white
Soon the incarnate shall be born

    The cradle of infinite gloom
The spell to master this Earth

"I will die for the love of the mermaid
    Her seduction beauty and scorn
Welcome to the end of your life

What's really amazing about this performance is not just the fact that Floor was sick (sick enough to affect her concentration in the latter part of the concert that she messes some of the lyrics up and she had to pace herself in certain songs, e.g. Elan, Nemo, The Kinslayer), but also the rearrangement is entirely different, because not only did the band have to shift from Tarja's dark tone to Floor's brighter one in this performance, but also the male vocals to Marko's as well. Floor's constant shifting in her dynamic also made this very enjoyable and palatable, as I've always considered the studio version to be very monotonous and, for a lack of a better term, droning.
I also love how this performance made the story of the song all the more visible (Marko plays the Devil that seeks to corrupt and tempt the Ocean, of which Floor plays both villainess and heroine as the Ocean pretends to submit, only to drown the Devil in the end). I never really got that with the studio (probably didn't help that I skipped the song a lot lol)
Also, Charlie, I love your vocal breakdown of the performance. I dunno if you're taking suggestions here, but if you're interested in songs like The Devil...Ocean, you might wanna check out some of Nightwish's older works such as 'Passion and the Opera' (From Oceanborn, with a segment that reminds me of Mozart's Die Holle Rache aka Queen of the Night Aria), 'The Pharaoh Sails to Orion' (also from Oceanborn) and 'Beauty of the Beast' (From Century Child, and what many NW fans consider as the forgotten 4th member of Nightwish's Epics).

Friend, again you make a great song, better by getting deep in the song the music the singers, but you now you are at this moment my fav, reactor i am here to stay, and when i can i wil support you with patrion or other option, have great day, stay safe

Saw an Iron Maiden / Bruce Dickinson reaction where he does his usual thing of punching the air for the big notes. That reactor reckoned it was to help create the note or assist his chest or some such. When Floor did the mega bit of singing with the Olympian breath control, she stuck her arm in the air towards the end and then crouched down for the final note. Was that dramatic effect or was that part of breath management do you think? Thanks for another very informative reaction!

Probably both. It does help a little with support, but by how she usually sings it's definitely not necessary. I'd say more on the side of dramatic effect, but for her, it's definitely all connected. She's an amazing energy on stage

I still think Toumas is a Metal Tchaikovsky rather than a Mozart. The music is more story telling and Romantic than Mozart I think.

The arrangement of this version is so good though, compared to the cheap midi sound of the studio version. They should totally do a new version of this song with this orchestration and with Floor's voice.

Just stumbled across your channel and enjoying the content. I noticed you said you enjoyed the voice of Tarja Turunen and I'm surprised that no-one has pointed out that Tarja released an entire album of Ave Marias - th-cam.com/video/tR5o4FrFxlo/w-d-xo.html
And she released what is probably my favourite Christmas album which is spooky and classical - th-cam.com/video/spJlqZIHK24/w-d-xo.html
And did an orchestral tour with her then drummer - th-cam.com/video/3groSGNqMBY/w-d-xo.html - and shows Floor how to sing Vilja Lied! As much as I love Floor, Tarja just has a better feel for that style. And I do like to point out her microphone placement on the orchestral stuff.
    All the best from Scotland.
