Denim Blue, with blond leather. Gorgeous. The fit and finish really impressed me when I saw one in the flesh. I do need to drive one though.... I'm not convinced that Volvo put enough "feel" into the steering.
I've bought the previous shape d3 2 days ago. And this is a complete change from me - I've owned more Honda over the last 30 years. But. I don't regret a thing. Its so solid, quality materials, so cheap to run I thought I was tripping, and has enough grunt for me, only 150 BHP but 350 nm torque.. Yes its a 5 cylinder d3 And it'll be tweaked a bit in time! Plus points are a heated screen I didn't know I had, and hill assist. Seats are so comfortable (they're ergonomic) but down side is the clutch is a bit awkward to judge, and it has no camera or sensors. It's funky, different and enough kit (cross country lux) to keep me happy for a few years.
I agree that it doesn't really look like the typical hatchback, but it looks more like a SUV than a Wagon to me.... I mean, it is not long enough to actually look like a traditional wagon (for which Volvo use to be more well known), although its rear end's design alone, does remind me a wagon... a sporty wagon anyway.
Chasing Cars Yes, perhaps because it is a little bit boxy, specially on the rear end, it looks taller than it really is.... Between this and a Mazda3... Which one do you think it's better and why? (having in mind, that we should be comparing with the base model V40).
+dandinofat Good question. As you've identified it would be a comparison between the bottom end of the V40 lineup and the top end of the Mazda 3. With that in mind I'd buy the Mazda, which for that price offers a stronger engine and a lot more standard kit. I think the Volvo only makes sense at the top end.
Love everything bar the handbrake... it looks a little off and the handbrake in the C30 would've been much better. To be honest i'm surprised an electronic handbrake isn't the norm.
Got myself a T2 2.0 since last month, I would recommend chiptuning for those interested, now my T2 has 225 hp & 400 Torque. The T2, T3 & T4 all have the same engines.
$55,000 for a Golf R competitor is way too much. (I suppose that's why it's supposed to compete with a BMW x1). The base version V40 at $45k would competes roughly against the R here in Canada but is 10% more money without the power.. Seems way out of range in each category. Are those normal Australian prices, ie all motors are more expensive in Aussie?
Yeah, we need to look closely at where Volvo are positioning the V40. If you compare it to a Golf (even the $55K Golf R), it's expensive. Volvo want it to sit between the Golf and the A-Class / 1 Series, though. This D4 with the Polestar additions is too pricey, but a $49K V40 T5 in stock form is a decent value alternative to, say, a $55K Mercedes A250.
Chasing Cars Right, Volvo here have the same positioning / pricing problem. By the time you get what you want you realise there's a lot better value in other brands. Polestar S60 here is C$80,000. that's Porsche territory but in a poor power:weight ratio. I exchanged a little email with Volvo Canada and they said though they can't talk about there's cool new stuff coming here in the next few model years, which I really hope is true - I want them to continue doing well. I notice they patented a powertrain which is what the fabulous BMW i8 uses - 3cyl turbocharged plus electric.
Very interesting points. That car is $100K here. Entry Cayman for example is $108K. Look, V40 (and S60/V60) is clearly very niche. The real sales are XC90 which is doing well here in Australia and is priced and equipped appropriately ($90K-$120K). Also looking forward to seeing what they do in future!
how are these ahhmm reviewers going to manage now they can't shoot everything down with 'the BMW 1 series handles and drives better because of its rear wheel drive' lol now that it isn't
i have the v40 T4, the best car i ever had, so confortable
same
Really agreed with your last opinion, it's a really nice place to be in.
Driving the T5 version(carbon) and the interior is amazing.
Got the V40 T2 since 2 years, and love it each day! what a lovely car! beautiful, comfortable and performant!
yes really,it's a great car.
Got mine last year as private lease, imho an excellent allround car. Basic 120hp is more than enough for standard urban and highway trips.
you are absolutely right! 100% agree with you;T2 is terminator 2!!!!LOL!!!
got a D3 R design that is actually running a 5 cil engine boosted to 210cv, got to love it ;)
WilfridRUN Would you recommend me to buy this car?
Thank you, we just bought a late 2018 D2 manual and we’re loving it!
I enjoyed your review, pleasant voice, concise , precise and informative description of a very nice car.
Thanks for the feedback Andy, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
This car really looks good in that dark blue color ...

Nice review
I have a 2012 V40 D2...really is a value for money...and power when you need it
Nice
Nice review Tom. Sleek car.
Thanks mate - I like it. Something a bit different to the German trio.
Nice video and review ! Thanks for this :)
+Alexandre Steinmetz No problem Alexandre, glad you found it enjoyable!
There are actually hooks in the boot for grocery bags, but they're not the easiest to operate
Could someone tell me what their rims are and where can I buy them... They look awesome !
Hello how much difference does between 2014 v40 cross country and v40 2014 please ❤
Perfect car. Very god colour Volvo king 👑👑

+dandinofat Definitely touches of SUV though it's surprisingly low in the flesh!

I agree, I love the fact it is a pretty low car that makes it look so sleek.
Good review 😊
Could do a review on BMW m140 please
Thank you - I'll do my best so make sure to subscribe!
So this is what replaces the c30 if Volvo brought this here , kinda wishing they would
Love everything bar the handbrake... it looks a little off and the handbrake in the C30 would've been much better. To be honest i'm surprised an electronic handbrake isn't the norm.
This car is from well before electric park brakes became the norm!

The T2, T3 & T4 all have the same engines.
Can the back seats flip down?
Yes, in a 60/40 split.
Would you buy this car or the new peugeot 308?
+Mike Neirinck 308. Newer, more modern, more agile. But test drive both!
Volvo V40 of course. Is higher class.
Peugeots seem to age rather quickly, the paintwork especially.
Is there a A/C vent in the back seats
no
What's up with the calculator !?
I want it

Did I hear audi 40 at 0:47?
"our V40"
There is no T5 versions in my country so I am forced to take the D4 :(
Its a hatchback
Simpel.
Volvo V40 D2 = ok
Volvo V40 D3 = good
Volvo V40 D4 = best.

" the interior feels more luxurious than a Mercedes a class" the pain lol he couldn't say that with a straight face.
Interior is too old...
+Visbalalam It's getting on but it's better built than almost anything in its segment -- which I care about
i'd take the old plushy volvo chairs over any chair in comparable cars (even from some of the $300k classic luxury cars)
