First time I had the winner of the National.
West Tip was one of the best horses to ever run in this race.
There is a stand named after him in Aintree.
    Well deserved too!

Wonderful! I love how West Tip kind of looks like he's not running that hard with his ears up!🎉🐎

My only winner at the National. Coming from the far West Of Cornwall, I had to back it. Did me proud.

How wonderful to see so many colours carried by the jockeys of so many different owners unlike this years shambles of Gigginstown having a tenth of the field.

.....think 25% of this years field is Gordon Elliot trained......

there should be a rule as to how many horses trainers can run in any given race, remember martin pipe had 10 in the 2001 race

I was 7 and my father put a pound on him for me. Probably to shut me up in the pub. He gave me the winnings in fairness! 😬. Great memories. RIP Da

That was the first and only time I placed a bet on a horse race. I had 25p each way on West Tip, and won £2.25. I was only 10 at the time!

it's amazing but I can belive that Cherle park had jumpers in their easy career as the stud farm for race horses

If you backed West Tip the year before you must certainly have been on it this day, looked all over the winner till second Bechers.

The winner was one of the GN runners placing most times in the race's history (4 times: 1st 1986, 4th 1987 and 1988, 2nd 1989).

I had a £1ew patent Ante Post West Tip 10/1, Dancing Brave 14/1 2000 Guineas and Bahkaroff for the Derby 14/1 Non runner and backed West Tip every year after in the national and also had Little Polvier the year he won at 50/1 ante post when West Tip came 2nd. Happy memories from my early betting years

My first ever winner at the National at the grand age of 18. I had to wait another 25 years for my next one :P A proper Aintree horse though - only fell once, won once, & good places in every other year he ran. And everyone remembers West tip having that huge scar on his hind leg where he had a clash with a lorry.....

That's right, he was a hero type horse. Tough character. He would win a few smaller races too and get winnings for yah

Pity he didn't win again in 1989 but the weight just had him coming up short.

if the door latch had not been brought down I am sure he could have won the Grand National but then again he has been known to fall in his race

What a feat of training from Jenny Pitman to produce Corbiere so fit to run again and again but this was his last as he fell.

Doody (spelling?) must have some sort of modern record for falling twice in the first 6 fences!

Dudie fell 3 times in 2 nationals. Dick Saunders riding Lady Kin in the 1970 Foxhunters remounted twice and still finished second.

Unfortunately Chris Grant and the Grand National was the equivalent of Jimmy White and World Snooker Championships. For the absolute life of them neither could win it finishing runner up at least 6 times.

you forget what carnage this race is, i do think now after all these years they should ban it, its had its time, and i think the brave horses would think so to.

The fences have been radically altered over the years and nowadays is a far easier course for both horse and rider. The Chair and Beechers Brook were difficult to navigate back then but in 2021 are nowhere near as hard. Horses are bred to race and whilst I agree to a certain extent it was hard in the 80s it's a breeze nowadays!
