    I remember West Tip falling in the 85 National and I followed him in every race he ran in after that. Even when he was 13 running in hunter chase'. 86 was my first ever bet (put on by my Dad as I was 10 years old!). For me, he's the best National horse after Red Rum.

    I love the commentators, brings back memory's, they make the build up special with their knowledge. It's lovely to see people enjoying the racing in normal clothes, not like the fashion show today!!!

      @@rjjcms1 Still say the BBC were the very best at commentating on the National.

    I was 12 and a half and had been gutted when it fell at bechers the year before but knew he would win when he jumped it this time. Dunwoody was by far the best jockey of his generation.

    Great ride from Richard Dunwoody, always travelling very well on West Tip. The Tsarevich was always a favourite of mine, he was essentially a 2 1/2 miler who didn't quite see out the National trip. He weakened markedly from the last but in all fairness a lot of use was made of him and connections learnt from this as he went on to finish runner up the following year to Maori Venture under a more restraining ride. Great upload...:-)

      Aye. I just listened to this in 2020 and was blown away by how many of the horses I remembered, including The Tsaerevitch. Loved those days. Was at this National and had West Tip. At the Grittar National I backed Grittar.
      I lost in the other one I went to, but can't remember which one it was. We paid for the cheap seats and then ran onto the course and all the way down by the finish line. Scallies lol.

    I was 10 in 1986 and remember listening to this race on the radio (I was at a football match!) - I was fascinated by how a horse such as Doubleuagain who was such a long price (500/1 I think) could be leading for so long! They seemed to go down to Bechers at a serious clip in this race!

    The winner was one of the GN runners placing most times in the race's history (4 times: 1st 1986, 4th 1987 and 1988, 2nd 1989).

    Great memories, I backed West Tip in his National appearances so this is always a pleasure to revisit. Has there ever been another National with as many winners lining up ??

    • @rjjcms1
      @rjjcms1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So many other Grand National winners and familiar,famous names,I couldn't believe how many when I saw that line-up. West Tip was the second time I backed the winner after Red Rum in 1974. I have a track record of backing the winner once every 10/11/12 years.

      what a terrible fence bechers was, just look at all those fallers

    • @rjjcms1
      @rjjcms1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Becher's Brook used to be notorious and a hazard - the changes made it much safer now. The brook had been drained dry long before this,and levelling the side-to-side slope on the landing side and eliminating the drop,or some of it,accomplished the task - before the latter was done at least one jockey described it as "jumping off the edge of the world". It's one of the tallest fences as well,but not one of the wiest like the open ditches such as fence number 3 (or 19).

      Perfect apart from I'd have liked a few minutes of the aftermath instead of it cut off so suddenly like that at the end.

    5 National winners - past and present ran in this race. It was a good national field with 106 initial entries and the last horse in Mount Oliver, a decent handicapper. Why Forget was unlucky to survive that nasty incident c 18.40

    Pity he couldn't win again in 1989 but the weight scuppered him I think. A proper jumper was West Tip.

    What was the name of the horse carrying the colours of Aberleigh House; the winner in 2004? It was no. 28. I spotted it as they were walking round before the startThecolours are navy blue with red and white striped sleeves and cap

    Interesting to see Cheveley Park having both their runners run big races, surprised they didn't continue having N.H. runners after that. Terry Ramsden was probably wishing it was a 5 mile race the way Mr. Snugfit finished after the last.

    The course was imposing and the BBC coverage professional. Better era indeed. Not a Chapman in sight to ruin the afternoon. Nor the race being downgraded to a 4m 3f cross country affair.
